Walkers hoping to become lean mean walking machines

This will hopefully be a place where those of us hoping to lose weight by walking - and other lifestyle changes - can discuss our highs and lows.  I love having the chance to discuss my walking goals, but I would like to start this as an area where we can discuss our weighloss goals also.  What kinds of food we are eating, and generally encourage each other to do good and meet our goals.

So if you are trying to find a way to start, if you are looking for encouragement to lose or to maintain, let's share our experiences here.

Re: Walkers hoping to become lean mean walking machines

This is a GREAT topic, Mandi!

I maxed out my weight at 273 and now I'm on the downward trail.  I'm shooting to weigh in at 150 lbs and then I'll see based on how I feel.  I'm not a spring chicken anymore!  The total I need to lose, though, is really discouraging so I'm focusing on 25-pound increments.  Have the first 25 done, now I'm working on the second.  I have to be careful to not become a slave to the scale or the calorie book.  I guess mostly I'm trying to reteach my body to eat when it's hungry ONLY (I'm a comfort eater by nature) and to feed it good foods.

Shelby

PS It's really embarrassing to put those numbers in public but this will be great for accountability.

Re: Walkers hoping to become lean mean walking machines
I started walking last spring, but have only gotten serious about it lately.  Walked my first 5k this month--it was great.  So empowering.  Now I go to gym usually 6 days/week and have worked up to 3 miles almost every time.  If my feet are tired or legs hurt, I still do 2 miles on the treadmill at a 3.1/hour pace.  Trying to lose weight, too.  Have dropped about 3 lbs but my numbers fluctuate too.  Can tell I'm building muscle and that weighs more than fat.  So trying not to worry about numbers too much as long as I feel better.  Looking for better shoes and better eating options. Hard boiled eggs, string cheese and yogurt are getting boring. LOL

Re: Walkers hoping to become lean mean walking machines

Hi Mary!  Sorry I haven't replied, the reply button has had a hate on for me lately.  I'm so happy for you that you've already done your first 5K; mine is coming up 11/14.  I've decided I don't care if I come in dead last; I'm just tickled pink that I can do it at all since, when I started walking a couple of months ago, a half mile had me certain I was gonna die.

I'm working on increasing my exercise.  I had the diet thing (excuse me, my new way of eating) going really well but kinda lost some of the momentum there as my son was very sick the last couple of weeks.  It's hard to rein it all back in again but I'm getting there.  I had a FABOO late breakfast today.  I have never had a breakfast that filled me up so completely and for so long!!!  I had 3 portions of Egg Beaters (90 calories) with a slice of fat-free sharp cheddar (25 calories), 2 slices of whole wheat toast (100 calories) and a banana (about 100 calories).  I stayed full and satisfied for HOURS on about 315 calories.  I need to find combinations for other meals that are just as nutritious and satisfying.

I had a happy moment today.  I had an appt in an upstairs office and, rather than taking the elevator, I took the stairs.  I wasn't winded at all; in fact, I zipped right up them!  So these life changes are helping!

I've decided I don't care so much about being thin (though I wouldn't object to it either) but I REALLY want to be strong and healthy and lean.

Shelby

Re: Walkers hoping to become lean mean walking machines
shelby, that's incredible that you have come so far and lost so much.  I really enjoyed the 5k I did--the group of people there was so supportive and strong.  I hope you have the same experience.  find one that has other walkers (not just runners) so you don't feel left out.  I finished near the middle of my pack for my age group (50-59) but was just happy to finish.  I feared I would have to call someone to pick me up!  LOL.  Haven't walked in the last two days--feeling very bone weary and achy.  But I'm back at it today so matter what.  The thing is, if I don't exercise I know I'll feel worse tomorrow than I do today.  the weather is nice today where I am--I'm going to visit one of our national parks and check out their trails.  They have easy and moderate ones ranging from 1/2 mile to 3.2.  I get bored walking same old places so want to try this before winter hits.

Re: Walkers hoping to become lean mean walking machines

I really need to get in on this discussion and become a bit more accountable for my eating.  LOL

I didn't start my walking program to lose weight but it has come along as an added benefit.  Now I am eating (or trying too) better to fuel my body for better walking energy.  When I started in June I was at a weight I had never seen before and it scared the hell out of me.  I just can't type it but it was worse than Shelby's.  LOL  Now I'm down 35 pounds and I'm still much much bigger than I want to admit.  But...it is getting better.

I am making better choices.  I'm pretty sure I have feathers now cuz of all the chicken I am eating.  LOL.  I'm learning to stir fry chunks of boneless, skinless breasts and leave it in the fridge.  I can make chicken salad, chicken tacos by adding salsa, chicken/rice/veggie bowls by adding some seasonings and fixings.  I can just eat it straight to power up for a long morning walk.  I did great when watermelon was in season....now I'm trying to keep fresh apples around.  I bought a 'corer, peeler, slicer' so I can zoom through an apple and have it ready for what I like in moments.  50 calorie string cheese is my new bestest friend; instant protein and kills the food craving.  Bags of the little flavored rice cakes are my goodies.

You know, I'm a Biggest Loser TV show fan.  This season has really perked my interest, especially last nights show when they were trying to get a gal to the break-through point.  She broke down and admitted that she was always the 'fat-girl'.  She could have been singing my tune.  I've always been the 'oh what a pretty face, if she would just lose some of that weight' girl.  I'm also a real emotional eater.  I am finally seeing that.  It scares me.

I got into an argument with my hubby last night on the phone and the first thing I wanted to do was order a pizza.  I was shocked when I realized that I didn't want it cuz I was hungry I wanted it cuz I was mad and hurt.  What's up with that?  I mean it is great that I recognized that...but what the heck do you do with those emotions?

Thanks for giving me a forum to unload and read and share

Re: Walkers hoping to become lean mean walking machines

38lbs!  I'm down 38 pounds since June 23rd!  WOO HOOO

Sorry, just had to do that.  I was hoping to be down 40lbs by the Monterey walk on Nov 15th.  I think I'll make it!

Odd thing though...I don't feel any different.  Everyone has always said you would have more energy when you lose weight.  I am exhausted.  Had a chat with my chiropractor about that yesterday.  He says is it because I am using up all that extra energy with all the walking.  I talked to the medical dr yesterday and she took some blood and decided I am anemic.  Go figure.  Ok, need to eat better.  Darn it - why isn't ice cream a food group?  ;o)

Gee let's see only 75 more pounds to go....ok, I'll be happy with 20 more...heck I'll be happy with 5 more.  I'm easily amused.
