Winter Gear?

Seeing that this will be my first winter as a walker/runner, I want to know what type of gear I should wear.  Regular sturdy and warm clothing?  Any of those lycra items that supposedly keep you warm?  Knit caps, or would they make you sweat too much?  I am not overly concerned about the roads/sidewalks - they are well-maintained in my neighborhood during the winter, but I would like know what would be best.  Thanks!  (P.S.  Also not looking to spend a pile of money on this as well!)

Re: Winter Gear?

Lance,

I was getting ready to ask the same question as I started running when it was warm and I am now just getting into the cold season.  The one item that I was really looking into getting was the Under Armour Cold Gear product (top and bottoms).  There is one that Dick's Sporting Goods has that is reversible for cold and warm seasons, but I have not seen much on it so far.

The cost from a regular retail store looks to be around $100 for the top and bottom.  Online, I have seen it for around $35 each pc with a little shipping.  The reviews I have seen have been pretty good and it seems to do what the manufacturer claims - but I am hoping that someone on here can confirm or at least give us a guideline for what works best.  Right now, my heavy jacket and multiple layers do not seem conducive to running  .

Eric

Re: Winter Gear?

I personally go with a thin stocking cap and gloves.  Keeping my head & hands warm goes a long way toward keeping the rest of me feeling warm.  I typically wear long dry fit tights & a long sleeve dry fit shirt under my normal running clothes (which are also some type of dry fit).  By dressing in a couple of layers, I am able remove something if I start to get too warm.  I don't suggest bulky clothing (like fleece) or anything made of cotton because it tends to absorb the sweat & then you're out in the cold wearing wet clothing.  Brrrrr...

As for the cost of the dry fit, your best bet is probably the Internet at this point in time because winter weather has already begun in a lot of places.  What I generally do is buy my running gear "off season".  At the end of this winter, I will hit the clearance racks at the local sporting goods & running stores to buy my gear for next winter.  In fact, now is a great time to buy anything you think you might need for next summer.

Re: Winter Gear?
Nice thoughts on it... I had not thought about looking for next summer yet.  I wanted to mention I did find some decent Dri-fit spandex type product made by Starter.  Check your local Walmart.  $10 for each pc.  I picked up the top tonight and it seems comfortable.  It is a compression type product and it seemed pretty warm when I put it on.  I think combining the set with my current running pants and then a lighter jacket and/or sweatshirt for the top for when it gets colder.

Yeah, Academy has 50% off all clearance, so I was able to go in there today & do some shopping for next summer.  I got a Nike shirt, an Adidas shirt, and a pair of Adidas shorts for a total of $17 for all three garments.

Re: Winter Gear?
Yeah, under armor cold gear is a must! dress in multiple layers so that if it gets too hot you can take something off. wind / water shell coats are a must for running in a blizzard. A fleece vest adds extra warmth to the core of body, and dont forget a hat if its actually COLD where you are. (im in NY, it gets pretty cold.) HAND WARMERS! (products such as "hot hands", available at sport stores like Dick's,  I use them inside a couple pairs of gloves for ALL my winter runs, but not for when I'm out for short periods of time!) cold wet windy... put thin plastic food prep or doc gloves inside the febric ones- it will make ur hand sweat some, but will keep them warmer! lastly, watch out for ice, dont worry about pace, and have fun! (oh, and ice runner cleats rock! ...if u r crazy enough!)
