Running Clothing

I am a new runner who live in Michigan.  With the changing seasons and weather down in the 30 to 40 what would you suggest wearing to keep warm and comfortable on run.  I currently have a pair of cheap spandex running pants (Insport Unisex Track Tight in Black) but do not like the look of them hugging my legs etc plus not very warm...  Can I use these as a base layer and then ad some nylon pants to break the wind and cold.  Any options and websites would be great.  Thanks in advance.

Re: Running Clothing

I am probably not a good person to give advice for this question as I live in South Carolina but one tip I have is that if you don't like the look of spandex hugging your legs (neither do I), you can wear something over it.  For cold runs I usually wear running tights with shorts over them.  Most companies (Nike, UnderArmor...) make shirts for cold weather that are moisture wicking.  These would be a good base layer, then have another layer on top to block the wind.  Gloves are also very important (they need to be wind resistant as well).  I like to wear the thick headband around my head too (the kind that covers your ears).

Hopefully some more runners from up north can help...I think it's alread colder in MI than it will get all winter in SC!

Re: Running Clothing

I also wear shorts over my tights in the winter (spandex is not kind once you reach your mid-40's).  I feel very uncomfortable in just the spandex & the shorts are just enough to make me feel better.  I'll admit, it's my own personal hang-up, but I can't help it.

Most days (I live in Oklahoma) the tights & shorts are enough, but I always run with running pants over my tights when the temperature gets below freezing.  I also generally wear gloves, a thin stocking cap, and two layers (moisture wicking, of course) of shirts.  I find that if I keep my hands & head warm, I feel warmer.  The key is dressing in layers, so you can remove clothing if you start to overheat once you get moving.

Re: Running Clothing
I live in SD and am new to running.  I would also love to hear what is best for cold weather running.  Also, where is a good place to shop on-line?  What are some of you favorite brands for running clothes/gear?
