Off-road shoe recommendations? -- a Newbie

I'm so new to running it's not funny.  I'm in pretty good shape and recent weight training has inspired me to start running off-road in nearby woods trails.   I'm looking for recommendations for good running shoes that don't cost an arm and a leg. I'm 5' 11" and weigh 150.    Thanks for your help!

You'll probably want trail-running shoes, and there are dozens of models to choose from. Most people will recommend you go to a specialty running store to find out what kind of shoe you need for your foot and gait. Depending on the type of trails you plan to run on, you might not even need trail runners -- regular running shoes are fine on dirt trails that aren't too rough. Trail runners will have better toe protection (for kicking rocks, etc.) and tend to have a more flared sole to help avoid turning an ankle. Many have more aggressive tread for muddy, slippery terrain. You may or may not need to worry about those features.
