It's been 9 months and I'm going insane!! I have a tear at the L4/L5 with compression on the S1 nerve. I've regained 90 percent of my strength but still have a tired back.
I was training for a 30k, weight training, and performing martial arts. At 40 perhaps I should have known better...I'll be happy if I could just get back on the road,
The PT wants me to take is slow for a bit longer probably start back with the C2-5K again.
Looking for others for encouragement.

Certainly can be difficult returning to running after a herniated disc. Generally, you need to wait until the disc has healed sufficiently to withstand the compressive forces associated with running. In the mean time, swimming (or walking) can often be good forms of exercise which place less stress on the disc (although this should be discussed with your physiotherapist).
A gradual return to running program is essential at the appropriate stage of your recovery and should be guided by your treating physiotherapist.

My PT had the same thoughts as you. I'm out there now and up to one minute without any pain or loss of strength on my left side (S1).
It's deflating everytime the 60s winds down and I have to walk but I started out with the C2-5k and ended up training for a 30k run. So this is a redo.
This time I'm incorporating core/stability workouts to keep me going. I actually do core before weights.
Last year I'd rather run and lift weights all day before doing one sit-up/crunch/etc.
Just a new way to exercise...just like running was two years ago.
