this topic ticks me off. about 5 weeks ago I decided to get back in shape. I got some shorts at target cheap but not real great. They ride up in my crotch when I run
. So then I started looking at capris to workout in. I got a pair at Ross. They felt tight on my legs and i thought they fit, But when I ran the waist started falling down as if my spare tire was pushing it down to remind me. GRRRR. Then the other day I bought an Xl nike shirt (from the sports/active wear section) and its a bit tight, not comfortable enough to workout in. BUT I've got shirts that are mediums that I workout in???? The place I workout is actually a fitness camp for adults. They odered team shirts for a 5k run we just did. I pre-ordered a XL females shirt I couldn't wear at the race cause it was too tight!!!!! I'm 5'4 and I weigh 153. I didn't think I was that big and still don't but WTF??? I can't even imagine what the rest of you are going through. Why is it that workout clothes are made for smaller framed people??? I can only assume this is one of the many reasons why some people get frustrated when it comes to making healthier changes in their lives. GRRR GRRR GRRR this topic makes me angry and I just had to vent. Good luck to everyone that posted something in this room and F*****(forget about) those people that are laughing at you, cause those people are unhappy miserable people on the inside.-Karri
BE THE CHANGE YOU WISH TO SEE IN THIS WORLD...
First fo all, you need to feel good about yourself and what you are doing. I lead meetings for a major weight control company and dream of members walking as far each day as you do... remember , research shows that most weight loss success comes from walking everyday longer, but slower. For real, those out there doing 3 days a week, 3 miles in minutes aren't gaining what you are.
Walmart has Plus size exercise clothes.... I started there.
You go girl
Well, I emailed Catherines and Lane Bryant and told them both that what they are calling active wear isn't exercise clothing. I explained real sizes for us girls who really do walk/run and workout. They both replied that they appreciated the input. I emailed ChampionUSA. They have a plus size line but everything is on back order. They explained that they don't feel sales of such plus sized exercise clothing warrants carrying the line and will likely be discontinuing their products...as the other gal said WTF?
I have had some success at Sports Authority in the mens section. I found two pair of Champion Rugby shorts in XXL. They were on sale for $9 each so I bought two of them. I hemmed them the length I liked better. I wore a pair in my recent 10k and they were quite comfy. Still can't find shirts I like....well, I wear Just My Size tee shirts but they are cotton and get WET and uncomfortable on long walks. I found two very comfy sports bras (42 b/c) one is Danskin and one is Champion at Walmart for about $11 each. I can live with that.
It would still be nice to have decent true sized clothing at decent prices. I understand the frustration with the shirts though...I got a 3xl technical shirt online and it wouldn't fit my 60lb dog....very frustrating

OK, I found Junonia (look great but priced way out of my wallet!), I found woman within and they have a website. Don't know how comfortable they will be but they are much much closer to my wallet size!!! They advertise "comfort, fit and value for sizes 12w to 44w" . Hope this is helpful. I'm still waiting on a little more income, because I'm not consistent enough for it to be worth spending the money.
Ladies, I am a big girl too- at 5'7" and 250 I understand. I have walked a marathong and several 1/2's. Keep at it!
I find that the Old Navy Fitness/Yoga pants are very stretchy and I am wearing a 2X in those capri style. Very Comfy. I agree as I have been thinner in the past some Target sizes fit. LB has great things, just a little pricey--
Keep at it and good luck!
Hey, if you're talking about sports bras, I got some great advice from a female basketball player. She told me to buy a sports bra smaller than what I need because they hold the boobs in tight and keep them from interferring with your workout. I was trying to start a running program, but it was very painful with all the bouncing and knocking around (I've been measured as a 44H! I didn't know there was such a number or letter either.) Since I've had such a hard time finding big girls' workout clothes, too, I tend to get XXL men's stuff so I went for the XL sports bras. It's a little tough getting the bra on the first couple times and even tougher getting it off, but if you're serious about losing weight and getting in shape, the effort will cause you to work harder because you're forced to deal with it twice a day.
YOU SHOULD BE SO PROUD OF YOURSELF! YOU DO SO MUCH WALKING - TERRIFIC!!!
I LOST 150 LBS SINCE LAST AUGUST DUE TO A GASTRIC BYPASS. I DID NOT THINK I WOULD LIVE THROUGH IT FOR THE FIRST 9 MOS BUT NOW I AM SO HAPPY I DID IT. BUT STILL I DO NOT WALK LIKE YOU DO. KEEP IT UP AND GOOD LUCK - BE HEALTHY AND HAPPY.
HAVE YOU EVER TRIED LANE BRYANT OR ROAMAN'S?
Thanks! I am proud of myself. It is such a sense of accomplishment.
Good for you on the 150! I wanted bypass but my insurance is less than agreeable so I just decided to do something, anything. This helps.
Lane doesn't have anything and neither does Romains. Part of the problem here is that you can find things that will work, shorts, tees etc. You just can't find the 'technical' clothing, the wicking stuff and stuff that should be used for exercise. So many of the companies have the 'bike-type' tight spandex shorts - not good for wicking away moisture that you get by long walks and runs. I can find all kinds of cotton tees; again, not the right kind of material for moisture. I will not give up. I am not the only big-girl-walking and I won't be the last.
Was it hard to adjust to gastric?

I just checked out http://athleta.gap.com/ don't let the models discourage you, they have pants and bras in plus sizes. They may be a bit on the pricey side, but if it's good quality and lasts forever (or until they become too big on you
), I'll spend the money for something of good quality.
Also, maybe check into some "outdoor" companies,Eastern Mountain Sports has it's own brand of wicking fabric (Called Techwick). You can get the mens t-shirts upu to 2XL in the techwick fabric online and in-store. They're cheaper than underarmour and last forever. I've had techwick shirts that are 5+ years old.

Thanks, WOW those Athlete prices are scary! LOL
I did find those two pair of Rugby shorts in a tech fabric and had them hemmed where I wanted them. I found a mesh running short that worked but had them hemmed too. Old Navy had a couple tech tanks that have worked well. Got them on sale for $15 each - that made me happy. Now I need to find some running pants as sooner or later it will get cold. So, still hunting decent clothes at decent prices.
Always appreciate the input!

I too felt like I was the only big girl out there walking. In fact I wasn't. I searched and searched for plus size performance wear and found some at great prices. Addidas makes plus size performance wear as well as Nike. I have found a lot of my stuff at Fred Meyer's and by going to champion, Adidas, Nike, Junonia's sites. Right now is a great time to by discounted items for next spring in the clearance sections. Also, as mentioned in the posts JC Penney's has Exhileration performance wear. It is stretchy and roomy. I have also done google searches for specific items that I wanted and have had some luck. For example - I like the "bra tops" or "tank bras" and I have searched for that and have been successful. Good luck and keep on walking!
Thanks for your input. I've done lots and lots of searching.
JCP's Xersion line doesn't come in plus sizes. Most of the rest of what JCP calls Activewear is simply fleece or sweats. Very disappointing.
Champion has done better at least with bras but not so great on sizes. Their mesh shorts are going to be discontinued - or so they told me. Frankly their compression shorts, capris and long pants - well, not for this big girl. LOL
I had not seen the Adida's wind pants. Thanks for that tip. Don't know about $50 for a pair of wind pants but I guess if it helps in the wind and cold I should just buck up and do it.
I guess I'm just cheap - odd considering I don't think a thing about the price of shoes - but Junonia's prices? Whoosh...really? I'm fat, not wealthy for goodness sake.
I found Nike's sizes to be shameful. Same way with Brooks - since when is a size 16 an XL?
Land's End has some nice things as does REI. I just haven't bit the bullet so to speak. Being in California I am putting off the inevitable.
I will keep looking and SO appreciate your help!

As you've seen from some other replies, you're not the only big person on this site who is trying to get healthy. In fact, over in the Running forum, under Newbie Cafe, you'll find a weekly thread for those of us who are 200 lbs. or more who are working through the Couch to 5k running program. This week's thread is found here (http://community.active.com/thread/74914/200lbs-c25k-oct-12-18/0/0).
Get hooked up with some online friends here, keep reading, keep posting, and keep active!
I got started on this site just seven short weeks ago, after I weighed in at over 300 lbs. on a 5'8" frame.
It was my wife's idea--really! Okay, it helps that I need to lose the weight, too.

Susan, check out Fashion Bug... seriously, their stuff changes every season and they don't have the hugest selection, but it fits, it's cute and it'll last through all the walking. Oh, and it's affordable!!!
Good luck, girlie!

I appreciated the thread on big sports bras. Now where do I find decent sport clothing and not worry about people laughing at me?
I'm 5'8", 250 lbs and I'm walking 2-3 miles daily (weekdays) and 5-6 miles daily on weekends. Any advise on decent size big girl workout clothes?
thanks

Thanks Beckie Lynn!
I FOUND WIND PANTS! Champion C9 at Target for $20. They are wonderful! Will check out Fashion Bug
