Re: Best Road Bike Tires for combination of performance and no flats

Another vote for Continental Ultra Gatorskins.  I'm 6' 3", 210 and ride in San Diego on hot roads with lots of debris.  I've used some other pretty good road tires--Armadillos and Specialized--but have had the best luck with Continental Ultra Gatorskins.  Xlt flat resistence, roll smooth and corner well, and pretty beefy sidewalls.  I ride 700 x 23s.

I ride year round and can go 6 months/2,000 miles without a flat.  You're going to get your occasional nail, staple, or deep glass slash, but I hate to change tires on the road and these suckers keep me on the bike more than any tire I've ridden.

One complaint you will hear about Ultras, they are a bitch to mount, very tight over the rim, especially the wire version.  (You might just have your LBS mount them if this is a problem for you.)  The non-wire, folding version is $10 more and approx. 50 grams lighter per tire, so I've gone to those because they both are a bit easier to mount and also ostensibly faster due to weight.  When you can ride a tire 8-12+ months, the price really isn't much of a factor.  Pay for quality, get it.

I usually buy Ultras at Performance Bicycles when they have their sales, usually ten bucks off, around $40-45/tire.

The suggestion above about rotating the rear tire to the front after a certain amount of wear is xlt.  Back tire wears faster so smart move to milk the full life out of a pair.

Good riding!

While there are some good suggestions for tires above, I recommend Michelin Lithion tires. I have been useing them for the past year. Short of running over a pile of razor blades left on the side of the rode, I have had very few flats when commuting or out for a fun ride. Inexpensive, long lasting and comfortable.

Continental Grand Prix 4000 tires - 600 miles later and only on flat on the front tire.  Love the tires, though.  I may take a look at the Continental Gatorskins for my next set.

I agree!  I had some Panaracers that I was told would be good for puncture resistance and they suck.  I got some GatorSkins a couple weeks ago.  700x23c.  The ride is so smooth, and no flats yet.  I commute 36 miles a day in Tucson, where thorns are the norm, not to mention your usual road debris that only gets washed off the road when it rains in July.  I'm glad to see that others like them too.

Re: Best Road Bike Tires for combination of performance and no flats

I used Lithions and split the rear tire on day #2. Trashed them and got a set of Maxxis Re-fuse. Great price and no flats, knock on wood. I have put 1,000 miles on them so far. I run over metal and other debris and nothing seems to puncture them. Not the fastest tires in the world but for the price/performance ratio, you cant go wrong. I run them at 115 - 117 psi.

GOOD LUCK!
