Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Nov 1st

Hi, everybody,

I already posted my race report yesterday so please forgive me for the duplication here.  I know Cyndi, Spice, and some others have already read it but I am going to just copy below from the previous post.

Okay, here goes for my race report.  Well, I got up really early at 4:50 am and race start was not until 8:00 and very near our house.  It was cold and raining and continued to do so right up and through the race.  The Maple Leaf is a small field so they don't use chip timing so I was very near the start.  My Garmin finally located satellites and I was able to use it.  During the first mile, Iook down at the watch and it says my pace is 5:27.  Well, I was not able to maintain that as a monster hill came up about 1/3 mile into the race.  Time for the first mile is something like 8:02 and then the second mile comes around and it is flatter.  I am trying to dodge puddles and rain is just pouring down onto the bill of my running cap.  But I manage a 7:56 mile according to the Garmin.  Mile 3 comes around and it is a little over 8 but not bad and then the final time is 25:02 or something like that.  My running buddy finished the first mile in 6:45.  He might be able to run with you, Snowman.

Well, it is freezing afterwards and I am so ready to go home to stand in a hot shower but running buddy talks me into staying just in case I placed.  Amazingly, I took first place for my age group!!!  Got a gift certificate to a local restaurant and a boost to my pride.  I have been struggling with an upper respiratory infection and my heel this week so I was proud of myself.  I do need to do some hill work though.  The hill just killed me.

I am taking a rest day today.  Happy Running this week!!!!  Go Spice!!!!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Nov 1st

Welcome to a new week everyone! Thank you, Toby, for a home of our own, and thank you, Joe, for herding us cats where we need to be.

Lisa, great job on winning your age group!

I did a 5K yessterday, Run Like Hell. (Jenny, were you there?) Unfortunately, it rained like hell on the start, so it was a long, cold wait, but once we were running it pretty much quit and I warmed up nicely. I finished in 36:36, almost 45 seconds better than my 5K two weeks ago and yesterday was on a hillier course. I was very proud of myself that I ran all the hills, including a short-yet-steep one at the turnaround, but I did end up walking about 10 second AFTER the 3-mile mark (can you believe it?!?!?!) because I'd really been pushing at the end. Then I thought, "Well, this is stupid" and started running again, including a big sprint at the end. Hardly an impressive time by this group's standards, but way more impressive that the time I would had four months ago when I WOULDN'T EVEN HAVE BEEN OUT THERE!

I'm just not a fan of the 5K because it takes me two miles to stop being completely miserable. Guess that's why I'm training for half-marathon (so I can be miserable during the first two AND the last two miles... lol).

Go, spicegeek!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Nov 1st

Good morning everybody! Ahhh…feels like home.

I ended up not doing the 5K yesterday but did do my 8 miles – in the rain. Less than ¼ mile from the house, it started pitching a big one – wind, rain, nasty. Before I hit mile 1, the iPod went out so I was musicless. I kept thinking of the quote about real runners and thinking about Cyndi and Anj running their halfs in far nastier than what I was dealing with. So the rain finally let up and the iPod came back about mile 5, albeit with random volume surges and I finished the 8 in1:24:59. All things considered, not too bad.

Rob – Glad to hear the hip’s doing better. Great job on the strength training. Tide was off this week-end (thankfully). I told DH, I know they guys needed the rest physically but after a couple of tough games in a row capped off by that nail-biter last weekend, I needed the rest emotionally.

Snowman – The heck with those people trash talking your times. Jealousy is an ugly thing. PLEASE post pics of Pee Wee Herman! What a stitch!

Misswendy – Awesome time and PR! Impressive mileage for the week.

Jay – Great job on the trail run!

Lorie – Good job on the cross-training. What is centergy?

Cyndi – I see we were on about the same distance yesterday. Good job! I feel you on the rain. I’m over it too.

Lisa – Awesome job on your race and taking 1st for your age group!

Juli – Congrats on your first half!

Megan – So sorry to hear about your son. Glad he is OK.

Kelly – Great job on your 5.25 especially when not feeling your best.

Melody – Way to tough it out on the run with DH. Once my half is done in January, I just plan to keep my weekly mileage around 20-25 and run a few shorter races. We have a 10K in early March here in Atlanta that I am going to shoot for a sub 55 min. time so I will be adding some speed work as well.

KBT – I did not end up making Run Like Hell yesterday but I was running “with” you. I questioned my sanity during that little squall that kicked up about 8:45. Great job on your race and time AND getting out there!!

Thanks for the bib number!! Everybody have a great Sunday!

GO SPICE GO!!!!!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Nov 1st

Hey everyone,

Watching the New York marathon on the internet... Hoping Paula will win, but she's dropping back a little now... Spicey is going well and on pace at just under 5 miles right now.

I did my last pumpkin workout Friday and was definitely feeling it after. Yesterday was a 10 miler. DH decided to cycle it with me (he has a cracked rib right now so can't run) - we went along an old disused rail line... the last 5 miles was in pitch black running by his bike light! It was good fun and I felt strong!

Today is a rest day... I somehow managed to slip over at home today rushing to pick up my phone - go my foot caught under the sofa as I slipped and fell over on that and onto my hip! I have some grazes and bruises on my foot and hip, but I iced well and think it'll be ok for running tomorrow! Funny that all I was worried about was being able to run!!!

Lisa - congrats on a fab 5k and first place!

KBT - Great 5k for you too! Sounds like you did fab on those hills... Cool to make yourself finish strong!!!

Joe - Thanks for moving us back and keeping us together! I think if we are honest, we feel more at home here.

Jenny - Great job running 8 in the rain!

Juli - congrats on your HM and a good pace too!

Betty - We'll let you off the 0.32 miles

Spicegeek is through 10k in 54:34 so doing really well!!! Run strong girl!!!

Happy runnning all,

Cara x
