Re: Hey a new half marathoners home !!

hello all and happy halloween!  Got up to the pouring rain again...its getting a little old now.  Really didn't want to get up and go out but did it anyway.  Did 8.1 in 1:37.  Not terribly bad considering I was doing that same distance when I was really training hard in 1:45.  Seems like I see a little improvement.  I'm going to do my best to shoot tomorrow for 10 under 2 hours which is my first goal...hell if Spice can run 26.2 tomorrow I can certainly run 10 in 2 hours or faster. So I've added weight training and I'll be damned if I can figure out how stressing the quads and hamstrings by lifting weights is good for running but since that's what I'm supposed to do to improve my time, I'm doing it.  I suppose I should be doing lighter weights for more reps, correct?  Have a great night and don't forget to change the clock tonight friends....

Re: Hey a new half marathoners home !!

Hi, everybody,

  First of all,

CONGRATULATIONS!! Miss Wendy.  What an awesome time!!!

Snowman-  I have never felt like you were bragging about your times and I enjoy reading your race reports.  It inspires me that I can progress as well.  So I am glad to see you posting over here again. With two small children,I unfortunately cannot manage to post on both.  You are very encouraging to everyone no matter what their time is.

Juli-Congratulations!!  Great job.  I have lost a total of 68 pounds over the past two years due to pregnancies so I hear you on the weight loss.  Like you, I was not athletic in high school either.

Lorie-Have to say I am very tempted to try for NY!

Jay-Good job on your run.

Joe-I liked both sites and I do understand the frustration of not having replies but it does seem to be better now.  It is more of a time issue for me.  I just can't do both.  You took the initiative to do something about the problems and that is great.   I like all of our group so I will try to check that site periodically.  Hope your training is going well.

Okay, here goes for my race report.  Well, I got up really early at 4:50 am and race start was not until 8:00 and very near our house.  It was cold and raining and continued to do so right up and through the race.  The Maple Leaf is a small field so they don't use chip timing so I was very near the start.  My Garmin finally located satellites and I was able to use it.  During the first mile, Iook down at the watch and it says my pace is 5:27.  Well, I was not able to maintain that as a monster hill came up about 1/3 mile into the race.  Time for the first mile is something like 8:02 and then the second mile comes around and it is flatter.  I am trying to dodge puddles and rain is just pouring down onto the bill of my running cap.  But I manage a 7:56 mile according to the Garmin.  Mile 3 comes around and it is a little over 8 but not bad and then the final time is 25:02 or something like that.  My running buddy finished the first mile in 6:45.  He might be able to run with you, Snowman.

Well, it is freezing afterwards and I am so ready to go home to stand in a hot shower but running buddy talks me into staying just in case I placed.  Amazingly, I took first place for my age group!!!  Got a gift certificate to a local restaurant and a boost to my pride.  I have been struggling with an upper respiratory infection and my heel this week so I was proud of myself.  I do need to do some hill work though.  The hill just killed me.

So not too bad a day for me so far!

Happy Halloween to all of you,

Lisa

Wow Lisa...first place in your age group...what a race and in crummy weather too!  Good for you...enjoy that gift certificate..you deserve it!

And no Snowman, you NEVER made me feel like you were bragging...you crack me up and encourage me to run as fast as I can.  Keep doing what you're doing and telling us about it and I want to see Pee Wee pics!

Re: Hey a new half marathoners home !!

Hey, Cyndi,

Thank you so much!!  The funny thing is I was so mad at myself because my time was worse than Susan Komen (24:56) and then I heard my name and it was such a tremendous boost to me.  I think it is exactly what I needed right now.  I looked in the envelope and there are also two cards for free vanilla cones at Sonic.  I suppose I can take the kiddos for those:)   Seriously, Halloween is hard for me because I adore chocolate and one of the reasons I chose a half marathon in February is to help me make it through the holidays without falling off the rails!  St. Jude's will help too.

Hubby and I are looking at a possible vacation to West Coast next fall and I am trying to find a marathon out there that would work well for me.  I want a Boston qualifier.  A lot of the courses look beautiful but tough.  For example, San Francisco.

Hope you have good runs this week and good job on your weight training by the way.  I have got to start working that back in.  I start with a running coach next week and I have this eerie feeling it is about to be reintroduced as well as abs which I HATE.

Re: Hey a new half marathoners home !!

Hi all, I haven't been posting, well I haven't been running , just been working. I like active because I've gotten to know everyone. Way too many posts to keep up trying to both. Don't think I cn keep up with both. Just wanted to log on and say GOOD LUCK SPICE!!!!! I am off tomorrow and I have your bib #. so I will check on you. Wish I could find it and watch it some where. I missed my 5K Halloween race today. I got the 3:00 am phone call, my 17 yr old crashed his car into a mailbox. He is ok, but he had been drinking so we have a horrible mess on our hands.

misswendy- That is an awesome 5k time! Congrats!!

Lisa- awesome race time!! Congrats on AG award too!

Again Good luck Spice!!!  No doubt that you'll rock it!!

Happy running all.....Megan

Re: Hey a new half marathoners home !!

Happy Halloween – I’m going try and get in a few words between the trick-or-treaters’ knocks at the door!

Yesterday I was sick as a dog; it hit me like a sack of potatoes and I was out for the count! Sore throat, sinus congestion, fever, and colds sweats ewww!  Today I felt a lil better so I decided to head to the gym for a light workout.  I did 40mins of strength training (back) and ran an easy 5.25 @ 8:20 pace. Felt good after the run…but kept getting headaches during the lifting.  Oh well…guess we will see what tomorrow brings!

Thanks for all the pic comments! Take Care, Kelly

Rob: Glad the hip is feeling better!

Jeff: Thanks for the pic comments!

Anj: I run on the treadmill 2-3 times a week…I find it helps with my speed and hill workouts! Of course nothing beats running outdoors…but the treadmill helps me monitor my training progress.

Cara: I would lean towards joining the gym…especially if they have good hours (my gym is open 24/7 and it really helps me ensure I get my workouts in – no excuses

Juli: Congrats Girl! Awesome job! I love the write-up, you should be extremely proud of yourself!

Rebecca – Great job on your PR!

PS: Why did we switch back to active?  I'll go whereever the crowd goes...but I kinda liked the training tools a WHOLE lot better at the other site.

Re: Hey a new half marathoners home !!

Hello All, I said I would follow where you go, so here I am.  This new setup looks kind of cool.

With respect to running, all I can say is, I am not as young as I used to be.  I am having a little trouble recovering from the 2 HM. I have been so tired.  I took a short nap after work.  I slept in today AND took a nap.  Hopefully I will catch up.  Regardless I am getting back into the program on Monday.  I ran with DH and boy was it ever difficult.

This is what I need from you guys….advice as what to do now.  I really don’t have any races pending.  I may run a 10K the Saturday before Thanksgiving.  I will run the River Run in March with a few smaller ones in between.  What do you do when you are not actually training.  A friend and I plan to get together for speed work once a week before kickboxing.  I also plan to drop some weight.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Toby, things look pretty cool

I second what spice had to say.  I feel an attachment as you are the ones that cheered me through my first marathon…you and my DH and kids.  Thanks.

Spice-Kick butt

Tri 2 Do it- I hear you on a cool morning.  It was 89 and humid today where I am.  It looks like the cool weather will not be coming soon.

Runlong-I say the same thing about luck

Snowman-PeeWee Herman is perfect for you.  I love reading your reports, it makes me wish I was young again and had your energy.  I think it is really heartwarming that you share it with others too in the form of your little running group.

Jay-you gave me nightmares saying “trail run”

Lisa-great report.  Congratulations

I just tried to "Reply to original post" and got the scheduled maintainance page.  I then replied to a specific post and was successful.  Not sure what that was all about.

Keep on Running

Melody

Re: Hey a new half marathoners home !!

Kelly - Please see my thread "The Tribe has Spoken" for an explanation on why we moved back.  However in short, we wanted to keep the group together. Hopefully we'll see better preformance than before from this site.

As for the training tools on RA you're certianly free to use them!   It's just the Weekly thread we'll have on here.

Re: Hey a new half marathoners home !!

Hey all

Looking forward to spice's race report.

jimmy's baby--I am a novice.  I ran my first HM two months ago and did feel sluggish for about two weeks.  I think it is defferent when you race--you push yourself harder.  I think crosstraining would be a good idea and short runs 3x a week.

I have a HM up next sunday--the mission inn run.  As I ran 2:08 in Big Bear which is at 7000ft, I am hoping to break the 2 hour barrier on this one?

Can anyone advice me on good pre race nutrition?  I generally eat a lot of brown rice with Thai and lao curries.

Good training everyone!
