Re: Walking a Marathon

Gina,  your calves have NOTHING to do with your shins....Your calves are on the back of your legs and your shins are on the front...Are you taking calcium supplements?  If so, how much?  I had horrible calf problems with my first marathon.  My coaches thought that it might be a lack of potassium and had me eating tons of strawberries and bananas....However, I read a book called "Strong Women Stay Young" by Dr. Miriam Nelson and she said that if you exercise a lot, too much calcium can result in calf spasms...Ever since, I've taken a bit less, and the problem has gone away...Also, which Fleet Feet did you go to?  I can't believe that they told you it was a shin problem!!!

Re: Walking a Marathon

Mrs Rose, I will look for the "Liz" on your shirt, and you look for my purple TNT shirt and my crab hat....I will be leading the early start for the full marathon walkers (at 7:30) and I'll be walking with them for 6 miles...then I'll cut over to the 24 mile marker...I understand that will be the 12 mile marker for the half...so look for me....YOU GO!! My full team did their 20 miles and my half team did 12 miles on Saturday....I was SO proud of them!!! and I'm proud of you -- You will do it!!

Re: Walking a Marathon

I did my very first marathon with Team in Training in 1999 when I was 49 -- the Rock 'n Roll in San Diego.  It's been downhill ever since. I'm now the race walk coach for the Annapolis, MD Team. I've done 4 additional marathons (the last one in Seattle in June), have trained at least a dozen teams that have completed marathons and half-marathons, and have raised about $20,000 for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in the process.  I've also seen some of the most beautiful children I know die from this terrible disease during that time.  This is what keeps me going....So, find a goal, stick to it!  You will find no greater pleasure in life!

Re: Walking a Marathon

Actually you can have posterior shin splints, it will produce pain in the calves.  It is rare though.......  just thought I would mention that (I have no idea which one she has!)

Re: Walking a Marathon

Mandi, THANKS!! my goal was under 6 hrs and not be dead last ...or dead, and I accomplished both, considering my training had been thrown way off and I hadn't slept more than a few hrs a night for the last two weeks, I was very pleased. Now I can't wait to do one that I am really prepared for!

Re: Walking a Marathon
Hi all, just completed the Columbus Marathon,Walking Division. I'm 64, and did it in 5 hours, 33 minutes, 36 seconds. I ran the Phoenix marathon in 1978, but have been a Walker the last 25 years. The knees tell you what to do. I'm still a little sore in the hamstrings, but otherwise OK.  I'm not sure I want to do another. I feel real good after 1/2's. I did the Spirit of Columbus 1/2 in August at 2:34:12. If I can offer any advice, please ask.-Neal

Re: Walking a Marathon

Hi Active Sara,

I am a 49 y.o. who just completed the Marine Corps Marathon in D.C. this past Sunday!  My time 6 hours and 44 minutes!  I am glad that I finished.  I am a first timer.  I had a bad blister on my big toe and chafing around my bustline.  I used body glide but not in the back.

I have the marathon bug and wiill do it again.  I may do the half marathon in D.C. next Sunday.

I want to improve my time on the next marathon.
