What do you say?

I ran a 4 mile race the other day.   At home stretch everyone was clapping and saying, "almost there!"  and I'm like duh yeah I know I can see the finish line.   I give it all I've got, feel like I'm dying and I finish.  yippee!  As I walk to my car for a fresh shirt I pass the same point those people were clapping for me.  Now here comes some racers and I start clapping and don't you know I said the same thing.  I just felt the need to say something and all I could think of was "almost there"  I felt kinda stupid saying it in fact. So the next time this happens what can I say that wouldn't be as stupid.  "Good job" is another line I'm not fond of.   Maybe something like funny but I'm drawing a blank.  Or has anyone ever shouted out something memorable or motivational to you?

Re: What do you say?

I don`t recall exactly what was said but in the last few yards of a 1 mile race - whihc is basically the hardest race distance I have ever run - I was about to pull back becuase my lungs were about to implode and some guy yelled - " come on you look great you`ve got this - keep pushing" - I kept pushing !

I usually tell they guys they are looking hot !!

Re: What do you say?

That's funny!  Last spring in a 10k with about a half mile to go, some nice volunteer yells, "You're over halfway there!" I still wonder if he was really a runner just saying that to mess with people.

Earlier this fall I passed a boy about 10 or 12 years old on a hill (he was a participant, not a spectator) in a fun little trail race. As I went by him he said "Good job!" and I thought that was really cool for a youngster. Every time I've been watching a race it's been as a volunteer, and usually I just yell "Woohoo!" or "Way to go!" because you're right, I hate "Almost there." "Good job" seems kind of patronizing from a spectator - I don't know why! Funny, isn't it.

Re: What do you say?

At the Long Beach Marathon we had our names printed in large letters on the race bibs. So towards the end of the race, spectators would often cheer for us by name. That was a really nice touch and an extra lift.

Re: What do you say?

I think it doesn't really matter what you're saying, as long as it is words of encouragement.

When I go to cheer for my son's cross country team, I cheer for everyone by name.  Usually telling them something like they look strong or they can do it or go pass so and so.  They've never complained...  Of course, I'm the wacky parent that brings them food and drinks, so maybe that gives me a pass for being annoying...

I will say that the teenager who told me the finish line was just around the corner at my last mini marathon was more than just a little annoying.  The finish line was still over 3/4 mile away!  Which I pretty well knew from my GPS watch.  But it still threw me off a bit.

Re: What do you say?

I agree with Solarflare.  Encouraging words are fine no matter what you say.

While running the Chicago Marathon a few years back and within two miles of the finish a guy was shouting, but he was saying we weren't moving fast enough or something negative like that.  I thought one runner was going to go off the course and punch him, and the whole crowd of runners started yelling at the guy to shut up.

You can tell by my sig line.  I don't really like "almost there" unless I can see the finish.  When someone says almost there 6 miles from the finish it's not helpful because I feel like the last 6 miles is the halfway point of a marathon.  I like "Run, Run, Run" or "You can do it."  During San Antonio a few years ago, near the finish, I heard a lady tell her younger son, "Look at him, he doesn't even look tired."  That really made me feel good.

Re: What do you say?

If people are encouraging me in some way I accept it. Their hearts are in the right place. I feed off their support, to be honest.

EDIT: Though I will say the guy that said "just one more mile" after I went under the bridge near the MCM finish (about half a mile to the end) almost crushed my soul .

Re: What do you say?

Around mile 23 of marathon a couple weeks ago someone was yelling "nice job runners -- isn't it great to be alive!" Oh my God, that was uplifting. For me mile 23 is usually pure misery: 3 miles seem like an eternity, half an hour of hell at my pace at that point of the race, the head games and mental fog are intense. And this lady yells this. Wow was she right. Here I am, healthy enough to run 26 miles, fortunate to have that health, to take for granted what so many don’t have…. So I think: this aint misery, it’s a celebration of ability, even at a 4:13 pace! Forget the pain, focus on the person in front of you, on the next turn, on the people cheering, and go.

Re: What do you say?

I am one of those runners that really thrives off of any kind of support (it's almost like I NEED the spectators). So, whether it's a band or just a sign, i try to say thanks to everyone coming out to cheer someone on.

for me- I like to say things like "You look awesome-great job!" or "You've come so far, keep it going!" I've even had friends say things like "2 more miles until beer/bath/food (insert whatever you want) time."

I very much appreciate all of the kind words of support, even if they're trite & overused.

Re: What do you say?

I was in the last mile of my first HM and dying (I mean dying)....there was a guy playing the trumpet for the runners...I said to him "I got nothin' left" and he said, you're here...you got it all left!  Best words anyone ever said to me at the end of a grueling experience....awesome!  Whatever you say, say it from your heart....it will matter even if you think its dumb!  I did see him after the race walking along the wet, windswept boardwalk...I thanked him...I'll never forget him.

Re: What do you say?

I like it all. It's the heart that counts. If you want to yell to me "You're almost there!" halfway through my race, then I thank you mightily.

One thing that a woman at about mile 25 yelled to me on my first marathon was "Okay #1944! This is your day!" She really sounded like she meant it. Like she knew me. It was pretty awesome.

I always make sure I try to say "Thank you!" back to the cheerers, or even the cops or course marshalls as I run by.

When I cheer for other racers at the finish line, after I have finished my race, I usually go with "All right!" and clap. I used to yell "Yeah!!", but that seemed a bit crude to me. I may be worrying too much, but I did not want the female runners to think I was yelling "Yeah!" about some of their "jiggly parts". Oh well...

Hey, Urbster...Thanks for stopping to cheer!

Re: What do you say?

I agree that almost any support is good.  When they tell me at  mile 23 "You look great"  I tell them they don't lie very well.  The only one I don't like is "You're almost there" at mile 20 of a marathon.  I stopped on the bridge at Marine Corps one year to ask the Marine with the bullhorn to stop saying that.  Those last 6 miles are probably the toughest 10K most of us will ever run.

I like that one, I just hope there really is beer right around the corner.  Gotta love the HHHs at mile 24 or so.  On on.

Re: What do you say?

That would be seriously cruel of me if there wasn't! Then again - I haven't found many events where there hasn't been beer around the corner! Gotta love a nice cold one at 8 or 9 in the morning
