depends on the race. distances vary from 250 to 400yd don't think i've seen any longer than that (except for the espirit iron distance tri which is 2.4 in a indoor pool used for rowing)
my first tri had the swim in a pool and it was 500 yards, 20 lengsths of the pool.
if you tri
the two sprints i did were 300m ( in a pool ) and the other was 800m ( open water )

Remember whatever the distance you are going to train for. Swimming laps in a pool is a great way to get started and work on the
technique of swimming. After several months of training laps in a pool it will actually start to hurt your training. Just like anything
you do, you need to change up your routine and challenge yourself. Swimming is just like anything you do, Repitions and sets are
critical.
Once the swimming stroke and technique are close to perfection or feel comfortable doing several laps without stopping then you will
need to start swimming workouts.
Example:
100Yds stretching out the stroke and swimming long and relaxed
4x50's Yds on an interval which is a little uncomfortable
At this point you are going to feel warmed up and ready to start training.
Just like everything else you do, you need to warm up. Long warm ups, don't get fooled by just swimming back and forth.
Interval sets are the best way to warm up effectively and lower the risk of injury.
Chart to refer to when you are unsure of your intensity:
1-talk afterwards with no problem
2-talk but with short pauses in between phrases
3-after every word you need to take in some air
4-takes a couple seconds to start talking
5-just can't talk!!!!

Learn To Swim or Continue Swimming
Hey there,
The pool sprints I've done are 400s. One event had 4-5 per lane and another had only 2 swimmers per lane. Sometimes pools have swimmers serpentine swim back and forth in each lane of the pool.
And winter indoor triathlons will have athletes swim for a set amount of time and try to get as many lengths/laps as possible.
Do you have a specific event in mind?
