What was your longest long run before your 1st Marathon

Hi All-

So I am officially in taper mode and have less than 3 weeks until my first marathon on Nov 22. I did a 20 miler on Saturday in about 3:26:00 and felt pretty good. My legs were very sore that afternoon and while trick or treating w/the kids, but felt fine on Sunday & I was back doing a 6 miler today.

So, I've done 2 20 milers and 2 19's and every other long run was working my way up to those. I know I need to trust my training, but there still is something anxiety provoking w/the fact that I will never do the full 26.2 until day of.

So, it's gotten me to wonder what most people do on their first. I'm feeling pretty good now and almost just wishing that the Marathon would hurry up and be here already!

TIA

Jeanie

Re: What was your longest long run before your 1st Marathon

I ran NYC yesterday - my long runs were 1x 18 and 2 x 20 miles - I was planning a 22 but had to stop at 11 becuase of IT band issues.

My 2 x 20 milers were around 3:15  - I ran NY yesterday in just over 4 hours

I did one 23 mile run and, due to lingering sinus infection woes, 18.5 of a scheduled 24 before my marathon under the Galloway plans. I will almost certainly be switching to a different plan with long runs capped at 20 for my next.

My longest run prior to my first marathon was 22 miles. Made it the entire way and felt awesome. That marathon finish time was 4:24:18.

Re: What was your longest long run before your 1st Marathon

My longest runs were 15.6, 16.6, 18.6, 20.0 and 21.8 mi; I was following a Novice level program. In retrospect, I would say that was the bare minimum to get to the finish line exhausted but still able to smile. OK, big grin and waving arms in air at finish line. I literally wrote "Trust the training" on the inside of my pace wristbands because I knew that anything beyond 21.8 mi was going to be the Great Unknown. Those words gave me confidence when my legs started turning to bricks at about mi 22, and it gave me the extra mental strength I needed to gear up and start running again at mi 23.

Re: What was your longest long run before your 1st Marathon

My longest run prior to my first marathon this October was a little under 22 miles, with a total of about 5 runs over 17 miles.  I agree that having not run the full 26 prior to the race was anxiety producing, and actually caused me to go out a little faster than I should have.   I read all over that you should not run your first marathon with a goal time in mind, and in hindsight this is probably good advice.  Just run comfortably, learn all you can from the experience, and don't let the adrenaline get the best of you.    Once you have a few weeks to look back after the race, you will have a much better idea of what worked and what didn't.  I learned that I wished I had stretched myself out a bit more in training, but that's just me.  Just enjoy, and envision yourself crossing that finish line, arms raised.  It can be a pretty overwhelming experience!

Oh yeah, and if the reduced workload during your taper period is making you crazy, you are doing it correctly!

Re: What was your longest long run before your 1st Marathon

My longest runs before my first marathon were:

2 x 21 miles

3 x 20 miles

2 x 19 miles

3 x 18 miles

I ended up running 3:38 (January 2009).  Some accused me of over training - fortunately I didn't get injured!

My 2nd marathon in April 2009 I did 21, 20 and 18 - had to take a week off due tearing a hamstring in a 10k about 8 weeks before the marathon (pretty dumb) - the hamstring was tight before the race and I knew I shouldn't have run, but I was stubborn!  Lesson learned!  I ran a 3:53, mainly due to the 30 mph winds, 70+ deg and humidity in OK City.

For my 3rd marathon in October 2009 I did a 23 mile training fun for the first time.  I think it helped.  I did the 23 miler at 30 seconds above marathon pace.  I also did an 18 miler at marathon pace (not recommended for first marathon) as well as a 21 miler and a coupld of 20 milers.  I ended up running a PR of 3:26 and qualified for Boston.  For the first time I actually felt great at the finish line.  The race conditions were ideal!

Trust your training and enjoy the race.

My longest before my first marathon was 20 miles.

Now my longest is 16.

I run far to slow to run any longer training runs .

I don't mind at all - please feel free to use it

Re: What was your longest long run before your 1st Marathon

My longest run before my first marathon wasn't very long at all...

But I personally believe it differs from person to person. My longest run before my 1st marathon was 10km(6miles) I wan't following any training program, but I must say I did feel like I was crawling the last 10 km..however I finished in 4:05hr....

It's best to use a training program, I've learnt that the hard way. I use coolrunning.com's training schedules, they work beautifully !

Re: What was your longest long run before your 1st Marathon

You're doing fine, Jeannie. (Just make sure you are stretching after your runs, though).

I was concerned about the same thing before I ran my first marathon this Oct. 17. I was so concerned about training enough that I had planned one 24-mile long run. Thank goodness my knee gave me some flak on the week of that proposed 24-miler. I rested that day instead, and found that I did not even need that 24-miler. I had run three 19-milers and three 21-milers before that.

I did not hit any "wall" and I did not even stop running once except for a brief moment when another runner and I crossed paths at a water station.

Don't worry! You'll be fine! All I did, when things got a little tight at miles 22-23, is I said to myself, "You can run as slow as you want. Just don't stop!"

Just hang in there! That finish line will eventually appear!

I fear no race, for I did run the Second Annual Wicked Frosty Four.
