Re: Starting c25k on 9/14...any takers?

Guys,

I had such a disappointing workout today.  I forced myself (literally, forced) to go to the gym because the temperature outside is like 37 degrees.  I'm sitting in the parking lot of the gym arguing with myself that there is a trail just a few blocks away, I have major gym phobia.  But I went in, got on the treadmill and man, it was soooo hard.  So much harder than what I've been doing outside.  I don't know if I psyched myself out or what.  I couldn't run the full 25 minutes.  At about 18 minutes I walked for 2 minutes and than ran for another 5 minutes and then threw in the towel.  What is my deal?

I thought that running on a treadmill was supposed to be easier than running outside because of the belt helping you.  I  guess that my running outside is much more elastic in that I change my pace without having to push buttons and decide what speed to set the treadmill at.  I feel like a loser.  For those of you on the treadmills, what speeds do you set the treadmill to for your runs?  Do you change it at all if you're feeling like you can't go on?

Thanks for letting me vent!

Kali Girl, glad to hear you had fun at the "world".  I thought about you a lot because I was wishing I was there!  Let me know how your run goes tonight, I'm wishing you the best!!!

Re: Starting c25k on 9/14...any takers?

I just found this website and imagine my thrill when I saw that someone else had started the C25K on the same date as I had.  I stopped for about a week to let my knee recover from bad shoes.  How is everyone else doing?

Re: Starting c25k on 9/14...any takers?

hokeygirl,

Don't beat yourself up.  I agree that running on the treadmill is much more difficult for me than running outside. I think it has something to do with watching the miles and time slowly tick along.  I don't know what I am going to do when it gets too cold for me to run outside.  I competed W5D1 today, so I am really impressed that you were able to run 18min.

Keep up the good work!!!!

Re: Starting c25k on 9/14...any takers?

hokey, don't worry about this difference on the treadmill. I had only been running on a treadmill till I ran a race a couple of weeks ago. I think the treadmill helps me with my speed, but running outside is harder on my calves. It seems like I can run alot further outside than I can inside. I'm trying to do a little of both now just so I can be prepared to do either run depending on the weather.

Did w5d2 yesterday. Looking forward to w5d3 tomorrow since I got me some new kicks! Haha!

Re: Starting c25k on 9/14...any takers?

Hokey: Years ago when I was younger, thinner, and in the Army I could run 5 miles in formation no problem, put me on a treadmill and I would be done in 2 minutes.  I think that if you "learn" to run outdoors, treadmill running is much harder and vice versa.  Don't get down on yourself- so you sucked today, tomorrow or the next day you will be fabulous!

Me- I have been trying for 3 days to run 25 minutes without walking.  So far, no dice.  I seem to have a 10 minute interval mental block.  Mentally I just shut down at 10 min., walk a little bit, then off I go again.  I am letting W6D3 kick my butt-but I just keep trying.  This week I am attending a leadership seminar so my schedule is off but I'm just using that as an excuse.  Just need to get out of my head when I run.

Re: Starting c25k on 9/14...any takers?

Hi Hokeygirl,

Don't feel bad about that 25 minute run - I had real trouble with it today too! It felt sooo much longer than the 20 minute one that I huffed and puffed my way through last week! I thought briefly about repeating W6 but W7 has two 25 mins runs so I may as well just try to do these with less pain.

I have been 'learning' on the treadmill because it's too hot outside and I think the problem is that it's just so darn boring. At least with a few intervals of walking thrown in there, it kind of keeps your attention. I imagine if you're outside, you at least have scenery and landmarks and the sense of going somewhere! I use my iPod and position myself in front of the TV screens in my gym so at least there is something to take my mind off how slow the run is going.

You're right - it is a real pain to push buttons to change speed, etc but yes, I do slow down if I'm having a really tough time - like today! I think I walk faster than the 'run' I was doing in the last 10 minutes... Seriously!

I can also relate to your gym phobia. I used to think that everyone was looking at me. But now I realise, everyone else is just concerned about their own stuff. They have their own 'plans' and programs and now I think, we're all just in this together!

I was thinking of trying the running track around the local park on the weekend but I'm scared of the serious outdoor running types!! And I have two parties on the weekend, so it will have to wait!

Cheers,

M

Re: Starting c25k on 9/14...any takers?

I did W6D1 Tuesday and am doing W6D2 today. Not too terrible, but I do find myself gasping at times still. My HR definitely stays at the tippy top end of the spectrum. I start at a 5.5 on the treadmill and drop to 5 if I just can't hack it. I use that as a bargaining chip with myself: "If you go one more minute, I'll let you drop it to 5.0 for 2 minutes..." etc. Once I complete the program, I'm going to work on my speed. I used to have gym-phobia, but then someone told me that the people at gyms are not there to judge, they are there so that they WON'T be judged. Yes, there are people who are supr fit at gyms, but if you look around, you will probably find that MOST of the people in the gym aren't in perfect shape. They are there to get fit just like you are! AND they are not even paying attention to you at all - especially if they are working as hard as you are. Similarly, those people with sculpted calves on the treadmill every day? they see you and think - "I was there too once, I hope they know it gets better!" they do NOT think anything negative. Promise.

Re: Starting c25k on 9/14...any takers?

You guys so rock!  Thank you so much for all the encouraging words.  I will definitely get back on the treadmill and try again. I realized after what you guys said that I did not look at anyone at the gym, because I was so self-conscious, so I think that they might not be looking at anyone either.  Or, this is just another issue that I need to work on, great!

Has anyone had the urge to pump up the # of times they run per week?  I'm starting to feel like doing some running on my days off.  Is this how the addiction begins?  Do you think that if you start doing more per week now that it's okay.  I mean, I know there are people who run every day, do you feel like you are ready?  How do you know when your body is ready for more?

Re: Starting c25k on 9/14...any takers?

I honestly never thought I would see the day I could run...well jog slowly 20 min without stopping.  I just finished W5D3, and it wasn't as bad as I thought. I had to keep telling myself I could make it.  I feel like I accomplished something.  Reading all of your post really has helped keep me motivated. THANKS!!!!

Re: Starting c25k on 9/14...any takers?

I think I'll have to go re-read some posts and get motivated again.

Well, its not that I am not motivated, I am just not able to run. There are times I think I have to be one of the most unlucky people I know. No sooner did I get home from my lovely vacation, and was set to run .... .THE day I was going to resume C25K I got the Swine Flu. I'm finally just now able to work and be in public again, but am still super weak. I was on such a roll. I never cheated on a single run, I never missed one of my set days to run that I had mapped out on a calendar through the end of the year. I had visions of finishing in 9 weeks and competing in my first race. Now my first race is 1 month and 2 days away and I'm just hoping to start week 5 next week.    But I'll do it! If I set a goal and tell people/put in writing that I want to do something, I always do it. I'll do my race - it just might not be too pretty, but a little walking never hurt anyone either, right?!?

Re: Starting c25k on 9/14...any takers?

Well, I'm here to report the 25 minute runs do get easier!  Yes, really.

I was dreading week 7 with its three 25 minute runs but each run has got just a little easier to the point where I'm now looking forward to week 8 and beyond. I know I can do it! Week 8 is just a 3 minute increase and then Week 9 is a further 2 minutes. I think the worst is over! That jump to 20 mins and then 25 mins - that was the hump in the road and I'm over it!

Keep going everyone - we're nearly there!

Re: Starting c25k on 9/14...any takers?

MichelleBBB- YOU ARE AWESOME!!  Congratulations on your 25 minute runs!

KaliQueen-  Sorry to hear about your H1N1, hope you are back up to speed soon!

I have wandered off the path of running righteousness but I am ready to get back on track.  I have really struggled with the W6D3 25 minute run and I have let myself get distracted from the program.  This week I was really motivated to start again but I made huge mistake #20093, I cross-trained (sort of) on a rest day.  I had ordered The Firm Wave because I am a sucker for a good infomercial, however, I wasn't going to start with it until I finished my C25K goal.  Buuuut after 2 weeks of having it in my closet, I couldn't resist!  If I were tougher mentally things like this wouldn't happen AND I would have knocked out the 25 minute run many times over! So I popped in the DVD, gave it my best effort and my legs haven't been the same since.  Or my arms or back because I chose to ignore the "beginners don't use any weights" advice of the instructor because "hey, I lift weights on my rest days all the time!"  Sometimes, I think I'm too old to be this stupid.  Anyway, the Wave is back in the closet where it will stay until December!  And now that I can sit down without suppressing silent screams as my quads rip themselves away from my muscles, I am rededicating myself to the program.  I am going to start W6 over tomorrow and I am going to get through this and beyond.  We have come a long way together.  I have been thankful many times for the community here so it's time to show my appreciation by meeting my goals and, hopefully, helping others do the same.

Re: Starting c25k on 9/14...any takers?

Hey all,

Are you still running?  Last week was rough on the schedule for me and I can see that going into the holidays I'm going to have to buckle down and make my running a priority and plan for it.  The treadmill workouts are getting easier, thanks for all your encouragement!  I will be starting the last week tomorrow as a few days of illness stretched my week 8 into two weeks.  I tried to run while I was sick and that was a mistake, ick!  I'm still running slow, but I can't get over how far we have come, we are truly amazing!  So when week 9 is done I will start training to increase my speed.  Have fun this week everyone!

Re: Starting c25k on 9/14...any takers?

I am still running, but due to some business trips I am behind. I am just starting my 25min runs this week.  I hope I can keep it up through the holidays!!!  I am also running pretty slow, but I am going to get one of those Nike chips after I finish the program and start working on speed.  I am still not losing as much weight as I would like, but that is probably due to my inconsistent running and eating.  Good luck through the holidays.

Re: Starting c25k on 9/14...any takers?

I am optimistic that this week I will finally be able to run again. The H1N1 nonsense knocked me out of commission for everything for quite a while. I wanted to run, but I could tell I wasn't healthy enough to do it, but finally I'm feeling almost myself again. I'm sure I'll end up back tracking a bit to get back to where I was, but that's okay - I just want to get back out there and finally meet my goal!
