Re: Starting C25k tomorrow 9/29. Anyone want to Join?

Hello everyone!

First,  thank you so much for all the kind words and congratulations about my getting past Week 5 day 3, the 20 minute run!   Believe me if I can do it, so can you!

More congratulations to LB82, Deniden and anyone else who got the 20 minute run accomplished.   Regardless of what work out your on, I admire you!  No matter if you run 2 minutes or 20 running is WORK... that is why they call it "working out."  We get the rewards afterwards.

Karen.. You are inspiring doing this despite asthma and a challenging work schedule. You continue to move right along and you are doing great~!

Kendra.. You are a great encourager!!  Keep on keeping on.

Libby... It is fun to read your reports as you and I are pretty much on the same page!   Can you believe we are more than halfway thru this?

Redhoney.. You are also a great encourager.  Don't ever worry about being "behind".. as long as you are doing what you can you will get there.

Christina.. you will get there.  Your body is in a period of adjustment.  Every time you try your body gets more and more used to doing this.  Congrats on being able to run 3 minutes!  If you can run 3 than you can run 4... and so on.

Drinkup..  congrats on week 5 as well!~

Stephen.. I love your descriptions of your workouts.  Although I am a Southern California gal now.. I grew up in Michigan so I love hearing about the nice fall days.  Great running weather!  I love your enthusiasm and your going to enjoy the 20 minute run and moving forward.

Fat lady...(soon to be fit lady)... thanks for joining us.  It sounds like you have a good running base to do whatever race training you'd like.  Like you I also need to lose about 40 lbs.  As we get the discipline down for this running..we can do the same towards making better lower cal food choices.   Let's do it!!

I finished WK 6 day 1 yesterday.   I am looking forward to doing the 10 minute runs tomorrow for day 2.  I'm going to try and run as close to a mile in that 10 minutes as I can!

This is a great group.  It IS encouraging to know we are all doing this together.  It is a reward after completeing a work out to come here and post it.   Have a great weekly workout everyone!

Jess

Re: Starting C25k tomorrow 9/29. Anyone want to Join?

well folks,

I just want to say- I did the W5D2 run today-and in all modesty-------------

I stride the earth as a god!- I am magnificence personified----all others must bow down before me!,LOL

SERIOUSLY

I can not wait to do the W5D3 20 minute run------- you folks that already did it, I seriously envy you if that feeling of accomplishment tops todays.

If we are goinmg to be strictly accurate- when I did W5D1- I felt like I could turn around and do the same work out again almost immediately

But TODAY?---- well strictly speaking after the run it did take a bit out of me- I didn't feel like I could do it again TODAY- or that I wanted to do it again today

but I feel like I could do it again tommorrow( but I won't)

I can't wait untill I thursday W5D3 and the 20 minute run.

what I KNOW- is that if I can run 20 minutes( and I can)---then I can run 25 minutes

If I can run 25 minutes- then I can run 30

If I can run a 5k- then eventually I can run a 10k-and who knows what?

this is so cool- it's almost like getting YOUNGER isn't it?- only better because instead of just getting younger- we also have judgement, and self controll.

BTW- weather during the run was perfect- about 40 and absolutely cloudless- running along a canal-the opposite bank perfectly reflected in the dead still water

and yet on my side of the canal- I could see all the leaves that had fallen into the water- the water was so clear- I could see the leaves suspended under the surface-surreal.

I also made 2 nice sales for my small business-which is alwyys a rush--so today I am feeling on top of the world.

My very best wishes to everyone-isn't it cool how we all keep banging away at this and getting closer to our goals?

Re: Starting C25k tomorrow 9/29. Anyone want to Join?

So I've slightly fallen off the wagon. I haven't ran in a week! DST has screwed me up. Has it effected anybody else? In the evenings I would meet my husband on his way home from work at our local state park, hand over the baby, and enjoy a run outside. However, the park closes at dark, so no more running in the evenings at the park. It was so convenient. I could enjoy some time to myself. I can go to the local gym and run, but it's farther away, puts me behind on getting dinner going, it's just not as enjoyable. I just don't know how to make it work. Arg! Oh well. I'll figure something out. Congrats on everyone in week 5. I'll be catching up soon enough. Time to fix dinner and watch my weekly inspiration of The Biggest Loser!

W6, D2 complete! My partner said I was running harder/faster tonight, which I didn't think -- but she was sweating profusely keeping up with me, so I'll take her word for it. I can't believe that was our last interval! These 6 weeks have gone by so quickly...

Re: Starting C25k tomorrow 9/29. Anyone want to Join?

I returned from my first ever four miler about an hour ago.  My God, it felt great to be striding along, almost effortlessly, for a full three quarters of an hour!  It was a perfect fall morning here on Long Island- crisp and cool but not windy, so I decided that this would be the day that I went long (and slow!).  I am going to do three days of 2-3 miles and one four miler a week for the next couple of weeks, hopefully going a little bit faster each time.  Good luck to you all.  After you have done 25 minutes a few times, you are pretty much there.

Re: Starting C25k tomorrow 9/29. Anyone want to Join?

I did the 20 minutes yesterday. It wasn't easy. I wanted to quit at 6 min and again at 14 min but I kept going. It WAS easier than w2day1-for me. That was a bad day. I don't even have asthma but I thought my lungs were collapsing. This was easier than that.

I bought new running shoes after that run. My old ones were worn out from walking long before I started running in them. That was a fun time-trying on running shoes and knowing how I needed them to feel and thinking about all we would do together-me and the shoes. I ended up getting the exact same style I already had but of course, they feel much more supportive.

Reading your stories is so inspiring. I do have a question though: After I run, I feel amazing-sometimes for several hours if I do it in the morning. WHILE I'm running is another story. Do any of you actually enjoy the process of running? If not, do you think it will come with time?

Re: Starting C25k tomorrow 9/29. Anyone want to Join?

Hello everyone. Today I did w5d2. ANd wow, I can't believe I ran 8 minutes. I'm shocked, and excited, nervous.... I didnt even look at the time till 8 minutes and I was sure I had 2 to go. I will say that d1 seem so tough for 5 minutes, and I had no idea how I was going to add 3 minutes onto that, but I did. Im starting to understand the whole if I can do it so can you bit. Also I think its a huge mind game. On friday Im set to do the 20 minutes, holy molly I didn't think I would even be here. ITs so exciting. I love reading all the updates and seeing how everyone is making it. It helps me so much. On friday, Im going to be so nervous. The pass few days I get on, I feel so nervous, puky and like IM about to jump out of an airplane feeling.  So here is to 20 minutes on friday.

I also watch some of the biggest loser, and last night tracy really inspired me. I thought she was a little crazy lol, but I felt sad when she was spoiler alert sent home. But what an amazing job she did at home, and she looked awesome.!!!

Keep up the awesome job!!

Re: Starting C25k tomorrow 9/29. Anyone want to Join?

Drinkup----

i think your comment on running being a huge mind game is" spot on"

most of the adult runners I  know- are pretty successfull people in their personal lives- but I actually pay more attention to high school runners- cross country kids.

I don't know if it is this way at every school- but I have been paying attention to one particular schools program  for about 10 years now- several years before my son ever ran there-and for 10 years Ihave been EXTREMELY impressed with the caliber of kids who are distance runners. Very very intelligent kids, some astounding GPA's- don't think I have ever seen a XC kid who was a dummy- very rare to see one who is only average intelligence-almost without exception extremely bright, focused, accomplished, productive kids with excellent time management skills.  In that time I  have watched 2 of them go on to get scolarships to run in DI college programs, 1 run DII with a scholarship and easily over a dozen run DIII with excellent academic scholarship packages, one who doesn't run in college- but runs marathons instead-and any number of kids who COULD have run at the college level with academic scholarships- but opted out.

I think it's clear- if you have the dicipline to push yourself to run- you also have the dicipline to accomplish tremendous things in OTHER areas of life.

Donna- you asked if anybody enjoys the actual running?

I do-however it wasn't always that way.- this isn't my first go around with running- but it looks like it  is my most successfull attempt.. In the past I always did too much, too soon. I might run 2-3 months- but my legs always felt like someone beat me with a lead pipe.

The C25K program- has been a revelation to me.- As long as I stick strictly to the prescribed plan- I feel great. I have been working on staying a bit detached, mentally from the actual running---------

- not to get too "ZEN"- but I have been mentally remainnig a bit aloof from the process- in my head I monitor 3 systems- my lungs/breathing, my legs over all, and specifically my very old, very creaky knees.- so when I am running I am looking for the best combination of those three things-kind of like monitoring a machine-and then when I get everything just so with that- I like to observe what is outside around me- the leaves, the weather, the water- the rain,sleet- whatever

so, yes I do like the actual runnint- but I gotta admidt I like the buzz afterwards- the feeling that I accomplished something-for that reason I run in the morniong because that buzz takes me through the whole day- I can't imagine wastit that feeling on the end of the day.

Re: Starting C25k tomorrow 9/29. Anyone want to Join?

Stephen,

Thanks for the response. I was just thinking yesterday that without the meditation experience I've had, there's no way I could do this. I've sat through serious pain and at least I can move through this...and it's not really painful...just challenging to the legs, ankles, and lungs. I've tried to run before too-same thing; too much, lead pipe, etc. So the next run I'll just try to think of it as running meditation.

Have a great day,

Donna

I forget the  exact name- but there is a practice that is basically "walking meditation"

hey-maybe we can found our own "zen lineage", LOL

Re: Starting C25k tomorrow 9/29. Anyone want to Join?

I dont think I enjoy the run now, but I do love the feeling after. I think there will be a time we enjoy it. Before I did this, I would walk 3-5 miles a day, and didnt enjoy it that much at first, but I truely enjoyed it once I got my pace and would try hard to beat my time each day.  I have more on my mind but have to stop, screaming children lol.

Re: Starting C25k tomorrow 9/29. Anyone want to Join?

finished WK6 day 2...  Instead of 10 minute runs I ran  11:30 intervals because that is how long it took me to run a mile.  With my 5k coming up in 3 weeks (yikes) I am starting to concentrate on covering the distance part of the weekly workout.   I want to make sure I'm ready to cover 3 miles.    I look forward to seeing how much mileage I can cover in the 25 minutes.  I am starting to just feel tempted to go for it and run the full 3 miles... BUT  I know I need to be patient and let my body train into this.

As far as feeling good during running... although I can do it.. running IS a challenge.  It doesn't necessarily feel good other than feeling good that I am accomplishing it.  But yes it feels awesome when your done.  The endorphins released are the best.  We are a society of wanting instant gratification and many of the rewards of running come after the work is done.   I try to focus on what is around me as well when I run.  My lake course has lots of ducks... and they are fun to watch.  The leaves on the ground.. the nice feel of the shady part of the course.   Today at the end of my run I actually passed a woman running..that was a weird feeling.   LOL!   I knew I was near the finish so I had my pace up a little.  Believe me I had several runners passing me by!   There was also a man in a wheelchair.  It looked like he had a broken leg.  I think he was working out his upper body by manually wheeling himself around the path.  He had a friend encouraging him.  Talk about motivating!  I know that he was working much harder than I was.   I am so thankful to be able to go out and do this.

Biggest Loser... I watched it as well.  Yes Tracy looks great!   Let us all Press on towards the goal!

Back on the wagon! W5D1 complete. Dare I say, it was easy. However, although I think I'll be able to handle W5D2, W5D3...not so confident. Twenty minutes, no walking, no break . What will help though is that run will be Sunday, and I will be able to run at my beloved trail. Thank you everyone for your updates. It provides me with the encouragement to feel like I can do this and the motivation to keep me going!

Re: Starting C25k tomorrow 9/29. Anyone want to Join?

I did Week 6 day 1 tonight.   It has been a busy week with activities each night.  I was so tempted just to go home and chill on the couch, but I put on my shoes and went to the gym to run on the treadmill.  I hate running at the gym, but it was so dark, I decided it would be better.  I did it and it really wasn't that bad.  I am just glad that I made the move to run and to stay on track.  Friday should be day 2, but it is another busy one.

Congratulations to everyone for making great progress!

Re: Starting C25k tomorrow 9/29. Anyone want to Join?

Well folkls- I did the W5D3 run today with the imfamous 20 minute run.

I would liie to tell everyone how glorious it was--- but in the interest of factual reporting- I am forced to confess it was a bit of a letdown.

the good news is- legs were fine, knees were fine, lungs were fine- I consciously held myself back at the beginning a bit-and when ever I noticed my pace picking up-I consciously scaled it back a half notch

s0000- I SHOULD congratulate myself on my correct pacing- because there was never, ever a point when the result was in doubt. I was completely and utterlu confident from the gitgo that I could make the run.

so what's the problem?- well I think I built it up to much in my mind- I suppose on some level I expected a marching band to step  out of the woulods at the end with trumpets blaring the theme from "Rocky" or something to herald my accomplishment.

Instead- it seemed a bit anti-climactic.

W5D2 was so much more of a rush and I am kind of disapointed because clearly I was expecting today to top THAT emotionally.

wonder if anybody else felt the same kind of let down?

plus

I notice W6D1 & W6D2 seem like a step back-a regression to intervalls

but I am absolutely going to refuse to tinker with those workouts- because clearly every run from W6D3 on to the end- is serious business-25 minute runs or longer-and if the C25K program gut me to the 20 minute run able to do it so smooth and steady-CLEARLY whoever designed it knew EXACTLY what the heck they were doing and I am going to absolutely trust the workout schedule

I thini maybe, MAYBE I should up the tempo ever so slightly on W6D1 and W6D2

weather today was about 40-and an almost freezing rain had just stopped- but the sun is actually kinda almost out right now.

saw an interesting pile of leaves today-half japanese maple half oak- deep burgandy and leather brown colors-evenly distributed- it looked like a pile of fabric-a wadded up tablecloth maybe- or a pile of old drapes?-anyhow- it was an interesting visual experience.
