The '09 Tom King was my second half marathon. I've run a total of about 12 now. So I'm no expert (translation: I'm not a running snob who complains about insignificant nonsense). The event is an in-betweener in terms of participants (not a mega-race, not a bare-bones local thing), but professionally run. It's more or less an out-n-back course, which is just a preference of mine - that is, ending at the start so there are no worries about transferring gear during the run, parking is logistically simpler, etc. The first mile or so runs through a rather depressing industrial area. The rest of the course follows the Shelby Bottoms Greenway along the Cumberland River. Scenic and quiet, no country bands to annoy you for 30 seconds as you hurry past, very flat (another preference of mine at this point in my training). Since there is traffic both ways on the greenway, you have to watch for opposing runners, especially if you're in a pack (I have no pack - I tend to finish near the last). You CANNOT beat the finish line inside Titans Stadium. They announce your name and city over the PA, and a Titans cheerleader gives you your medal as you cross the 50-yard line.
So, bottom line: Good combination of low-key event with some big race touches. Great run for beginners or those who prefer peace and quiet. Don't run this race if you need a challenge and will complain bitterly about it later.
