Starting the C25k Tonight (11/3/2009)

Hey everyone, I've been lurking around the site for a few weeks now in preparation for starting the C25k program. I started walking in July and have been gradually increasing my pace and distance so that now I walk 5 miles 3 times a week in about 1:20. I've never been able to run far, even when I was in better shape, but it's time to give it a go again. My goal is to be able to run a 5k by the Spring, and to start taking off some weight. Right now, I'm 5'9" @ 245lbs.

Just wanted to drop in and introduce myself. Everyone on the site has already been a big help to me as I prepared for this next step. I look forward to sharing my experience with everyone.

Hey John-

I am a lurker too... actually started this morning. I found this site afterwards at work, and as it turns out, I followed the c25k approach almost exactly this morning, so I figured it was fate. I am in NY, so the winter part of this may be a little rough. Do you live in Jersey? I am 35, and it is time to get serious about some fitness. This seems like a good community of folks, all motivating each other. Can't seem to find any 5k's in January tho... any ideas?

I live in Orange County, and work in Rockland... grew up in Middletown.

I think I have been pretty lucky (in relation to your other post), as I have moved to week 2 (yesterday), and find the pace to be perfect for me. Just the right amount of winded and soreness, at least it seems that way. I am 6'1", 215lbs, and out of shape. Like you, I figured I better just get to it, rather than wait fo the weather. I guess I will find a race when the time is right. I know there are plenty around here in the spring.

I think you are doing the right thing by waiting to move to week 2... and I imagine others would agree. Wait until you can do it comfortably, otherwise you will set yourself up for injury, which would be a major step backward. I also feel some pain in my knees and ankles, but nothing serious. Slow and steady wins the race, right? Keep at it, you'll feel better soon enough, me thinks...

Good luck, I will keep checking this post (might just be me and you, huh?)

Re: Starting the C25k Tonight (11/3/2009)

Hi John!

I finished the C25K in October. I think I ran Week 1 for at least 4 weeks in a row - getting more frustrated and discouraged because each run seemed to get more difficult.

I eventually bit the bullet and ran Week 2. I was shocked at how easy (yes, really!) it was. I didn't feel ready. But the program is structured so well. I didn't think I'd be ready for the 20 minute run either, but I was and I never looked back.

Maybe you might think aboug going ahead and trying Week 2. You might be suprised at what happens.

Began C25K so many times...Finally graduated October 2nd, 2009.

1st 5K: Southern Lights Stroll, Lexington, Kentucky 11/19/09 36:59

Next 5K: Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot in Russell, Kentucky
