GoRunIrish- I didn't notice if anyone had sent you a link on the one hour runner.  http://mindplunge.com/c25k/one-hour-runner.html  Another suggestion would be to check out John "Penguin" Bingham's book Running for Mortals.  The Appendixes have a bunch of post-C25K workout plans some for increasing distance, some for increasing speed.

best,

Re: 200 lbs+ Nov 2nd-Nov 8th

Besch Here is a little secret.  You will find that over time, it may take a while for you to warm up and get the muscles working in a rhythm. I find it harder to run intervals than to run steadily for a longer length of time.  So when your runs feel easier at the end, it may be because your muscles are warmed up.  My first 8 minutes of running is the hardest.  It is only through C25K that I realized that if I can make it past the first 8 then I will be okay.  Which is probably why I use to say I hated running.  I would never go past a few seconds before I was tired and figured it wasn't going to get any better if I ran any longer.

Re: 200 lbs+ Nov 2nd-Nov 8th

Sunkist First let me welcome you to the board.  I wouldn't recommend a shoe but I do recommend getting fitted for your shoes. Go to a running store.  They will watch how you run, either on a treadmill or just through the store. They will determine if you Overpronate, Superpronate etc.  Don't go to a box store, go to a store that specializes in running.

For the Newbies here are some tips:

  1. Most of us did C25K training program  the link can be found on mine or AFMR blogs
  2. There are podcasts by Robert Ullrey (techno music with prompts when to run and when to walk) links can be found on the same blogs  There is also kissmyblackass.org she has hip hop music but the explicit versions...just warning
  3. If you are a woman- get a good bra so that you don't cause more sagging than necessary  MOving Comfort makes good ones  Fiona and Maia are the two top styles .  If you have full breast (in other words, you fill a complete cup and not just the bottom...get the Maia. I has an underwire and more coverage.  You don't feel the underwire...the best bra ever!
  4. Start slow... for the first 6 mos to a year of running you are just building endurance and stamina and getting into the groove...if you start out too fast, you risk injury
  5. Remember there will be days when you have what you perceive to be "bad" runs. That is okay. They happen. They happen to even elite runners.  They are like bad hair days...they just happen, there will be good ones, I promise.
  6. Check in everyday and make some friends.  It is so much easier when you don't run alone, even if your running partners are thousands of miles away.
  7. Sign up for your first 5K...give yourself a goal.  And remember, your first 5K goal is to just finish.
  8. Try to get some tech shirts and pant/shorts.  Nothing fancy. Walmar sells them and Target.  Just something with wicking in them to pull the sweat away from you.
  9. Remember to hydrate properly.  If you don't, you could get headaches.
  10. Most importantly...have fun and enjoy the process!

Re: 200 lbs+ Nov 2nd-Nov 8th

Finally a reply button! Now I've forgotten what I wanted to share. lol. I do want to join you guys/gals in welcoming the newbie's. Fluffy has given some really good advice. You'll find the people on this forum to be very supportive and encouraging.

KilliansGal - Are you running with your best friend or doing the program together but in different states? Either way it's nice to have a support person. And what a wonderful 40th birthday present you'll be giving yourself!

Fluffy - I also find that even though I walk to warm up, it still takes 5-10 minutes of running to get into my groove. However, I've never hated it. I've loved it from the first 60 second run. I was mad at myself for being so out of shape but I loved the feel of running. And after finishing W7D3 tonight, I love it even more. I just wish my legs and gluts were stronger so I could run longer than 3 miles!

Almost time for Biggest Loser! (makes me miss Carrie).

Hope everyone is enjoying their runs this week!

Re: 200 lbs+ Nov 2nd-Nov 8th

I too find it hard to do intervals. It is better if I just keep running even thought I get tired after a few minutes but if I push through then I hit my stride. My first 5K; I ran my first mile and third mile below 16 mm and then my second mile was 16.8 mm

Re: 200 lbs+ Nov 2nd-Nov 8th

I completed W1D1 today (with new shoes/sports bra) and boy what a difference! Don't get me wrong, it kicked my hiney, and I went at a really slow pace, but I did it! Never in my wildest dreams did I think I could something like this, I'm overweight (not for long ) and suffered a torn ACL 2 yrs ago!. I feel like the possibilities are endless if I can make it through the program.

One thing that happened was I got what I like to call "exercise induced itching"...i'm sure there's a medical term for it; it usually happens anytime I start exercising after a bit of a hiatus....I was only about 10 minutes in and it started (talk about distraction and a reason to want to stop).  Anyone else experience something like this??? Does it get better? I am praying this is temporary because it surely took my focus off of what I was trying to do.

Re: 200 lbs+ Nov 2nd-Nov 8th

I was just introduced to this website a few days ago and I love all the comments and encouragement. I was just about at 200 lbs  in March. Now I am at 176 and training for a 5K..currently on W5 D2.

Before March, I had tried to loose weight for soooo long without success.  At that time I heard about the Bodybugg.  I purchased it and have been on the right track eating better, eating less and going to the gym 4 or 5 times a week. With all of this, the scale seems to be stuck lately. any suggestions??

Re: 200 lbs+ Nov 2nd-Nov 8th

Back home and able to run mid-day again.  Couldn't wait to get back to my regular running route to see how my times are doing.  Started out the first mi at ~16mm pace, but slowed on the last two miles. Legs felt like 2 sausages.  Not as easy as I expected it to be in cooler conditions. However finished distance about 6-7 mins faster than 3 weeks ago.  That finishes W9D2.

By the way, I was still able to lose 3 lbs on vacation.  All of that running, swimming and walking sure helped. So did eating reasonably. Plus no little kids to tempt me with Halloween treats.  So far, I've lost 18 lbs while on C25K (+cross-training & diet) and 24 lbs total since mid-summer. Yipppeeee!  Intermediate goal - 20 lbs more by year end.

Re: 200 lbs+ Nov 2nd-Nov 8th

Hey everyone....It's been a few days since I've posted.  My modem is getting kind of pooey and my internet access is sketchy.  Plus my mom was admitted to the hospital again...that drama is ongoing.  I'm so glad I have exercise and not beer to help me deal with the stress.  Oh yeah, and the job loss thing.  Whatever.

I completed Week 8 Day 2 today.  (yes, newbies....I started this program in this group at W1/D1 and am now running 28 minutes straight.  You WILL do it!)  My W8/D1 on Sunday was my best run EVER , and I mean EVERRRRRR.  Wore my new HD radio, listened to some Top 40 dancy stuff, which usually makes me want to puke but man the steady beads kept my mind and body just going, and going, and going.  I'm averaging still around an 11 minute mile.  Tonight was W8/D2....a little tougher because I was on the indoor track which is more monotonous and the air inside is very dry.  But even though it got tough, the music kept me going.  After that I did weight training for about 20 minutes and burned off a lot of stress.

Can't believe I'm just 4 runs away from the last one!  I look forward to expanding it and starting maybe the pushup program.

To the new folks....this is a terrific program.  Welcome!

Fluffy, that's a great list!  Add my welcome to the newer folks. I'm still newish myself.

I cannot imagine an underwire bra for exercise, but then I really can't abide them in regular life, either. I do have a couple of Champion bras marked for the holidays. Also was thinking of trying to find some more workout pants, but there is that issue of refusing to get anything new until I'm back in regular-person sizes. I'm close -- 16/XL should be next.

Really great list -- different than others I've seen.

Hi Debra... Welcome!

Since this group is made up of a lot of newbies, there have been lots of discussions going on over the last couple of months about personal experiences.  Each week a new thread is started for the 200+ runners so that there aren't 70 pages of discussions to pick through.

This link: http://www.active.com/running/newbie-runners/  is a whole section of Active designed for new runners.  I think you will find a lot of answers to your questions there, as well as in this thread.  Since everyone is different, not all advice is best for everyone, so pay attention to your body, most of all.  Sounds like you're on your way!
