First 5K - Ipod or not?

This weekend will be my first 5k race ever ( OperationTroopAppreciation.org )   I have been training for 10 weeks and have been using my ipod to keep me focused during my runs, is it ok to listen to during the race?  OR would it be totally rude?  I never have the volume loud to where I cannot hear others arround me.

so I dont know how to add the link but I do blog on here, if you want to know more about me, just go through my profile page

Re: First 5K - Ipod or not?

This is a topic that has been debated many times here and elsewhere, and really it boils down to personal preference. It's only rude if it's so loud it bothers others and you can't hear someone approaching from behind, but since you say you don't do that, it's probably fine. However -- my own opinion is that for your very first race, you should leave it at home so you can listen to pre-race announcements, pay attention to your breathing, hear encouraging cheers from spectators, etc. You only have one first race -- let the experience provide your focus and motivation! I can't imagine tuning all of that out with music, but lots of people do.

It is also a good idea to check the race website and see what your race's specific policy is on iPods. The final decision on iPods is up to the race director. Some races ban them outright (at least on paper), some allow them unrestricted, and some allow them unless you are competing for an award (including age group awards).

Music can be even annoying when it's getting hard to run.

I think you will run much faster in the race than during your usual running training, so it's much better to listen to your breath and so on.

I sometimes talk with other runners during race. It gets more easy to run Of course, if you want to be the first, there's no time to talk.  But if you are running for pleasure, there's no rush

I am now training for a marathon.

You should definitely check to be sure iPods and mp3 players are allowed.  If so, then it’s all up to you.  I ran my first 5K with mine, but had the volume down pretty low so as to hear other runners approaching.  In the last mile, I used only one ear bud so I could hear the cheering spectators as I got closer to the finish.  As long as they are allowed, I will at least take the mp3 player to all my races and decide once I am out there whether or not to use it.

Re: First 5K - Ipod or not?

I'm an ipod fan and have run all my races with my ipod.  I dread the day (and it will come soon) that I will need to leave it home for a race.  I even checked the first marathon I plan to run and they allow ipods.  I'm no elite, keep my music low, don't turn it on until after the gun and watch out for others around me.  You could always bring it and keep it handy if you feel you need it.  I also find the smaller races more people than not are wearing ipods unless they are walking and talking in groups.

Re: First 5K - Ipod or not?

I always take my tunes with me.  Sometimes I'll turn them off for a while in a long race especially when the crowd is good.  If you're used to it and the music helps your concentration, stick with it - try during training runs turning it off and on while running so you can do it easily during the race.

Re: First 5K - Ipod or not?

I vote to leave it in the car.  I ALWAYS do my training runs with an iPod - I'll even drive back home if I am near my health club if I forgot it and time permits.  But for some reason during a race, especially a 5K, I really prefer not to have it.  I started off using them for my races, but once I decided to try without it, and I performed better and enjoyed it.  A 5K is a short amount of time, so I think you'll enjoy the experience without it more.  If it was a longer race, say a half marathon, the iPod may be a better idea.

Re: First 5K - Ipod or not?

I think people miss out on a lot when they wear ipods.  A race is a community event and ipods are isolating.  IMHO.
