Building Endurance

I am on the couch to the 5k plan and I am having a tough time building endurance to run outside. I can do it on a treadmill at an incline, but when it comes to the wrong - I have seemed to hit a wall. Can anyone give me advice on how to build endurance for jogging outside? I also must say I have mitral valve prolapses which is heart condition (not life threatening), just have to work harder to condition my heart.

Re: Building Endurance

Running on a treadmill is physically different from running on solid ground, and therefore it doesn't feel exactly the same to your body and often feels harder at first, much like the difference between riding a real bicycle vs. an exercise bike. My suspicion is you're trying to run too fast outside. Just slow down a bit, don't worry about not having that nice electronic display in front of you to tell you how fast you're running or how far.

Once you get used to running outside, I would bet dollars to donuts you'll like it it better. I find running on a treadmill to be more difficult now that I've been running for a couple years. I hate them but they're sometimes necessary if it's snowy or too cold outside where I live.

Re: Building Endurance

I've only been running for a couple years, but I have found that transitioning from treadmill to real jogging can be harder than it seems. Just slow down on your pace and slowly, once you build your endurance up, you will find that real running is much better than treadmill running. My advice is just to gradually move off of that pretty little machiene and graduate to something much more satisfying.
