Re: 5K in 9 Weeks Start 11/1

Hi all! i worked the last two days at the hospital (saw lots of babies born!) and am going to try to make myself do W1D2 run today. W1d1 run was much harder for me than i thought it would be. i did not really measure my distance, as i live in the country on about 100 acres, i simply ran up and down our driveway and around our property. how are yall measuring your time and distance? with pedometer/stopwatch type things? this is probably a dumb question, but i am SO not technically savvy, have a simpe Palm phone, that i can not figure out how to get to be an MP3 like it is supposed to, and don't even have an ipod or MP3. alot of these downloads or podcasts yall talk about, can they be used only on ipods or on any MP3? this may be really simple but for someone who does not have playlists and all that jazz it is not.

i am wondering where everyone is from, since from the name of some of the races it sounds like some of you may be in SC as well? post if you are comfortable with that.

trying to work out what i will do with my kids when i run as this determines when i run. if i take them to MIL every time i run it would work, but it is a bit of a pain and i hate to impose on her like that. my husband does not get home from work until 5 and it is getting dark so early now and unfortunately i don't have a track or even a paved road with lots of street lights to run at night, as i live in the sticks;) in rural SC.

i have a lot of pretty, hilly land to run, but not a lot of tracks and such.

anyway, that is where i am right now.

oh yeah, looking for some new shoes as well. only pain i had after w1d1 was some cramping in my calves. tried to stretch really well afterwards.

glad i have someone to be accountable to, i NEED that!

Re: 5K in 9 Weeks Start 11/1

Queen00: About the podcasts posted--I think that they all should have ques telling you when to run/walk. I haven't listened to all of them, but the ones I will be using (http://feeds.feedburner.com/suzcouchto5k and http://runningintoshape.com/5k-training-downloads/) both have narrators.

Whew! I am in a world of pain today...I have learned my lesson the hard way, that stretching is IMPORTANT! I hope I will be feeling better tomorrow because I am completing day 2 no matter what! Looking forward to trying running outside on Saturday for day 3 when my husband can watch our son. I'm sure it will be way different than treadmill running! I'm going to run on the track at the high school to estimate my distance. I too am curious at how you outside runners record your distance--pedometer?

cfarmfolks: I am not familiar with many mp3 players, we just happened to receive an iPod Nano for a Christmas gift a few years back. But I am assuming you can download podcasts on any of the listed websites, save them on your computer, and upload them to any type of mp3 player. I bet you could probably get a basic one for pretty cheap, and it should come with instructions on how to get music off of your compter and on to your mp3 player.

Paygirl--cougars and wolves! Holy Moly!

Well I will be repeating my mantra, "No Pain, No Gain" all day today, and tomorrow I will be stretching like a smart person.

Re: 5K in 9 Weeks Start 11/1

I feel your pain. Literally. I was fine after the first run and all day the next day and then when it was time for my second run this morning I woke up really sore. Once I started out on the run I felt better though and even now I am not that sore although I am sure I will be tomorrow again.

As far as finding how far I run I have been using http://www.mapmyrun.com It allows you to map out your run over a google map and it tells you exactly far you have gone. I think it is really handy.

Re: 5K in 9 Weeks Start 11/1

Hi Paygirl, thanks for the welcome.  My pain is mostly in my thighs alittle bit in my shins.  I suppose the 5 mins warm up wasn't enough.  I knew I should have stretched but I do what the program tells me to do.  LOL.  oh well, lessons learned.  I downloaded the c25k app for my iTouch and I'm so glad I did but it's only going to let me use through it once.  I played it last night to check it out since I already did w1d1 and I can see how it's going to work just fine.

I've never run in my life and I'm excited about doing something I've never believed I could do before.  Guess this is coming with the scare of turning 42!!!

Re: 5K in 9 Weeks Start 11/1

Hi Everyone,

I decided to officailly start C25K today since the past two times I really just walked.  However, I do feel like the grass was growing faster than I was running!  The temperature was wonderful about 41 degrees and they sky was a beautiful blue.   I brought my dog, Biscuit, with me this time.  He seemed to enjoy it and he wasn't to bad to walk run with.  I think he was still sleepy.  When it was time to job he would turn his head around and look at me like why??????????  Which is unusual as he is a Lab/Retriever mix and normally FULL of energy.  On  the plus side there was a cute guy running too!  He passed me up several times.  Showoff

JustLindsay- I purchased ear covers from (believe it or not) Lowe's.  They wrap around the back of the head and cover the ears.  I would say stick some cotton in your ear but you would not be able to hear the podcast.

DadeWilt- If I saw you running at 3 AM I would probably call the police and say there is a crazy man on the lose!  Of course that doesn't explain why I am out at 3 AM!

I am so excited about all of the links ya'll have posted.

Oh and some one  mentioned about where we are located, I am in Mobile, AL  also know as LA....Lower Alabama.

Well I have got to get to work before I am fired!  t'ee

Cheers

Looking forward to my "Runners High"

Re: 5K in 9 Weeks Start 11/1

peaches: Your right about the mp3 player, any cheap one would work! I have one that I paid all of $40 for!

w2d2: I ran this morning, which is a change for me. It was rather cold starting out (45, cold for me! lol) but I pushed through! I ran though some sprinklers which cut off right as I passed by, I just had a huge laugh at that!

Since there are so many podcasts and mp3 files available for c25k, I thought that I could change it up every day and never have to listen to the same one three times. Monday I listened to Ullrey's podcast. It was great in terms of cueing and telling me how much I've done/ how much is left,  but didn't care for the music too much. Today i tried out podrunner which I didn't think was to helpful other than to know when to start and stop. But if you like minimal talking, then you might enjoy that one. For Friday I'm trying the one from Running into shape. Anyone have a review of that one?

Question to everyone: What type of stretching routine do you use? I noticed after today's run my hamstrings were tight, I'd like to avoid that in the future.

Have a wonderful day everyone!

Re: 5K in 9 Weeks Start 11/1

Bansheee great job on your run this morning, I know what you mean 45 is too cold for me too.  Stretching before and after running is very important, we don't want to pull a muscle and be side lined.

This is a great website that shows stretchs that are good for runners.  http://www.halhigdon.com/15Ktraining/Stretch.htm

I hope that helps

Debbie
