Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Nov 1st

Hi all,

BORING day at work!!!  Ugh!

Anyway, so today I ran hills - kinda.  The plan was to go to the other side of my neighborhood where there is a decent sized kind of long hill and just run up it and jog down it 4 times.  Well by the time  I got ready to head out, it was pretty late and very dark.  (My mother in law cooked - can't miss that!  Yum!)  Usually I run with either my brother in law or some people from work so I always have someone with me.  Well my bro in law stood me up (slacker!) so I had no one to accompany me.  DH wasn't real keen on the idea of me running in the dark by myself, so we leashed up the dogs, (equipped with reflective vests and blinking lights on their collars!  So cute!) and headed out together.  We pretty much walked, but whenever we came to a hill, I would run up it.  It did end up being 4 decent hills total, but it was a much easier workout than I had planned due to all the walking in between.  DH ran a little, but not much...    But even though I feel like I cheated a little bit, it was a beautiful night and it was nice spending time w the DH and dogs.  At least I did something!  Right?

Jeanette - I like what you said ab not being fast.  I've said this before but I sometimes run with my tall friend (I am 5'1") and she is barely moving her super long legs and I have to practically sprint to keep up with her!  NOT fair!  And you are right really - you are only in competition with yourself!  I hope the docs upgrade you!!  I am sure that the bicycle and eliptical will make you a stronger runner overall.  I am adding the eliptical to my workouts for the first time tomorrow!

Lisa - I am glad you mentioned the McMillan Running Calculator - I had never heard of that... I looked it up and love it!  A running coach sounds so exciting!  Do you know what kind of workout he has planned for you?  That is a good question.  You don't want to perform poorly on your first day.  But I, too, hate skipping a day!  I am very curious as to how it goes!  Keep us posted!  Glad DD is ok.

Robby-B - Congrats on your first half!  Glad you posted finally!    I totally think you can do a full in May!  That is my goal as well.  The plan I am following will have me starting the training in Dec too.  Which one are you using?  I am using the beginners plan from coolrunning and I have replaced some of the short runs with cross training once a week.  Good luck!  Keep us posted...

Jay - The rule of thumb is basically for any run over an hour you should bring hydration.  And I have heard that a sports drink is better than water bc of the electrolytes.  I have not been at that milage long enough though to compare for myself though...  But congrats on 10+!  That's awesome!  What kind of dogs do you have?

Ron - Congrats on your HM PR!!!  AND with a painful hamstring...  That's amazing!  Great results!    Keep us posted on your full marathon training...

Sue - Wow - running after a hard lower body workout is never fun...  Yikes!  Happy travelling!

Jenny - Kudos on going to vote!  Good for you!

Wendy - Good job on 15 miles!  That's awesome!  I always want to be at the beach...

Cara - Good job on bootcamp AND running!  My DH always says, "Pain is weakness leaving the body."

Doc - YES!  The world series is a lame excuse!!!    Pathetic!  JK, enjoy the games, they only come once a year...

Joe - Yes, I ran in San Antonio.  We just ran in my friend's neighborhood though.  She lives in Cibolo right off of 35.  I'm sure there are a ton of better running places there, but I was just happy that we got to run together...    I am traveling back there for her wedding on the 21st though, so maybe we can run elsewhere...  Any suggestions?

Cyndi - How nice of them to buy you a new ipod AND load it!  Awesome!  That is so cool that your fitness center wants to feature you!  Yay!  Keep us posted...

Mac - OUCH!  I hope your foot isn't too bad!  That sucks!

Juli - I too feel that I need to strengthen my legs.  I am just planning on incorporating some eliptical and weights into my workouts.  My neighborhood is hilly though so I do get some hill practice...

Lorie - Glad your ankle felt ok - March is a long time to wait!  Fingers crossed...

Happy running all!

HEY KBT

I think you and i are in the same boat. I'm running another 5 K this weekend because i need to get past the fear of people around me, and keep telling myself i deserve to be here and running too. I don't know what my problem is but i get lined up and fired up and then somewhere along the line things go badly and my self talk gets the best of me...........argh.......I've tried running with people in almost everyone of my races and i still self doubt.what's up with that? and so now i'm in week 4 of hal's 12 week 1/2 mary and i'm doing it right? hells yeah. Sunday i ran 5 miles and that was my first increase for my long run. My short runs during the week went up .5 mile too. Keep up the great work. Just thought i'd write a quick note i am having a really hard time posting to this site and keeping up. so i guess for now i'll leave it here. short and sweet.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Nov 1st

Hello all,

Nothing really for me to report. My legs are still feeling it from the intervals yesterday - they were really achy last night... Bootcamp tonight so that should be a good test. I'm due to do a tempo run tomorrow, but if the legs are still tired I will switch for my 6 mile easy (Fridays run)

Doc - glad you are sticking round... now get your butt out there and get those workouts in

Joe - Cool on the new link! Did you decide on what you would run Sat?

Jay - dog walk is cross training NUUN are hydration tablets - you put them in water. I used to use a handheld bottle, but switched to the belt earlier this year - I have to say I don't really notice it as long as I stick to 2 bottles (about 20 oz)... I did run with 3 once and it became really bouncy

Cyndi - Lovely of your family to replace the Ipod so quick! how was the choir concert Cool on the fitness journey!

Macd - hope the fall injuries are better today and that the ankle is holding up! These things always happen at the wrong moments!!! take it easy for the rest of that taper

Juli - Hope the first post race run goes well! Racing is always different from training... it shows you put the effort in! Hill repeats are good for strength, as is strength training - squats / lunges etc. Oops - sorry I accidently just reported abuse on you... I didn't mean it my mouse just slipped

Lisa - Nice 6.07 and cool to start working with a coach! Maybe see how you feel after the coach session before deciding on the group run? only one run on one day cannot be considered lazy

Lorie - Hope the ice does the trick on that ankle

Spicegeek - I remember that down steps feeling Do you have a post race recovery plan? I followed one which built the miles back over 5 weeks - it was great and really stopped me overdoing it as soon as my legs started to feel better... Love the post race pic!!!

Cary - Nice workout with dogs and DH. My DH isn't keen on me going out in the dark alone either... although I do as i'm not going to give up a run The hills runs will still do you good and nice to spend some 'family time'!

Coloradotrigirl - you are a true runner and you always deserve to be there! Good luck with the 5k!

All ok with replying today it seems!
Happy running all,
Cara x

I ran a dinky 2.88 miles today, but it was a trail run, and I ran it so that it was mostly uphill trail.  So I got a good workout.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Nov 1st

This morning was my first run after my HM Saturday. I was SO ready. I felt like I could run yesterday, but I didn't want to push it. It's a really good thing I didn't! My legs were still very tired. I didn't realize it until I started running. Is this normal? They are still aching right now.

I ended up doing 4.5 instead of my usual 6. I have a 12 mile run scheduled for Sunday to prepare for the St. Jude's HM December 5th, and I'm hoping I can do it!

This really surprises me, because I didn't feel anything like this at all when doing 10 mile training runs.

I am hoping to be back at my usual 6 miles by Friday. Should I take more time off? I don't want to lose ground with another half coming up.

BTW-I bought the cutest shirt. It says "Peace  Love  Run" and in the heart above the word run, it says 13.1. If, I mean, WHEN I run a full, I think I'll have t-shirts, stickers, hats, everything I can find that says 26.2!

Happy running!

Juli

PS Snowman-if you are short songs for the CD, I also love Don't Stop Believing by Journey. (This selection is showing my age!)

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Nov 1st

Hi All~

I wasn't able to post yesturday for some reason so I did 3.5 miles yesterday and 4.5 miles this morning.  Both we fairly easy tempos.  I generally run my Tuesday run for speed but since I had a 5k last weekend, I didn't push it yesterday.

I have a question that I was hoping someone could help me answer.  I had a 20 mile week two weeks ago, with a 7 mile long run.  And last week I only had 16 because of the 5K.  So, going into this week I want to make sure I have a 10% increase but is it okay to have that increase off of my 20 mile week or do I have to start back at 16 miles and increase from there?  I have felt fine on my last to morning runs and would like to increase my long run this weekend to at least 7.5.  What is the general trend here for training??  I have another race coming up on Thanksgiving, but it is a 4 mile race and I figured that would fit in for training day and I could still do my long run on Sunday.  Any suggestions for this week??

Thanks

~Rebecca

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Nov 1st

Hello all, Ran another 7.5 this am in, drum roll please, 1:28.  My times are slowly and consistently improving which is awesome.  Might just be something to this weight lifting thing but I'm not admitting it to anyone just yet.  Do have a question though.  Since I have added weights now, I am definately finding that my quads are significantly stronger than my hamstrings.  Do I continue to train my quads while I'm building my hammies or do I hold off on addtional quad work until the hammies come up to the same level as the quads?  I don't want to continue the unbalance by training the quads with the weight they can handle or a little more and the hamstrings will continue to lag behind since they can't even move the weights at the same poundage as the quads. Have a local 5K on Saturday.  Its an anniversary race for me, that was the second ever 5K I ran last year and its a nice course.  5K is not my distance though so I don't expect to see improvement in my time...I was slow last year and I'm still not a good 5K runner....at least it will be fun.

Rebecca- I think its fine to increase your long run to 7.5 miles. I've increased both ways either 10% additional each day or 10% on my long run with no ill effects. I did the daily increases when I was first starting out and now usually stay pretty steady on my normal runs and only hit increases on my long runs.

Juli - I traveled right after my half so spent an awful lot of time sitting for the first 2 days and severely tightened up. When I ran again from day 3 on I took it a little easier and then went back to my normal running in the second week.  I have a very similar shirt to that but it doesn't have the 13.1...just the peace sign, heart and runnning girl.

Cara - How are you feeling after your fall? The concert was, well, a high school concert...need I say more?  Had a real blonde moment...yesterday I was a little disappointed in the armband for the new ipod.  My old one had a belt clip and I was very used to that.  The armband (on my left arm) was awkward and I kept getting messed up in the cord.  Today, I moved the armband to the other arm...and guess what...it was better....duh...why didn't I think of that yesterday?

Anj - almost 3 miles uphill on a trail?  wow, thats hardcore!

Coloradogirl - I'm one of those people who trains like an lion and races like a pussycat...very different than most people.  I stress out, beat myself up, and pretty much do a head trip on myself.  I keep racing though...actually have a 5K this weekend.  I know I'll suck at it...but oh well.  Don't give up...the more you do it the better it will get.

Caryan - great way to enjoy the night...we take what we can when we can!

Spice - Great EC picture.  I hope you're enjoying your time with Jon while he's here!

Massgirl - take care of that ankle...feel better. Lisa - dying to hear about the coach...

Mac - I'm so sorry to hear about your mishapp. I hope you're feeling better today but sometimes it takes a few days before all the hurt shows up.  At least you won't only run tough but you'll look the part too! And my goal for the More sticks no matter what Spice might say...

Joe - thanks for the encouragement in FB.

Have a great day all!  I'll share the final write up that the fitness center posts once its done....should be interesting.

Cyndi

Hey hey hey!

Once again, I can't get shout outs in today but I'm planning on it tomorrow!  Just busy at work and everything else.

Been working my IT band, moving todays run to tomorrow.  Knee feels so much better today!

I guess my lil clubbing troll attacked Rick and left me alone.  Sorry!  I swear I didn't tell him where you lived!  He's just crazy and loves whacking people!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Nov 1st

Yea Snowman you need to keep that Troll out of my area   fortunately it looks like it was only a one day thing, because I got up this morning and the knee was fine.  I did 5.2 this morning in the brisk weather (mid 30's) but was happy to have light only a couple minutes into the run.  The knee held up and I am hopefully going to chalk it up to sleeping on it wrong (or one time troll attack).

It sounds like this weekend is 5k time!  I have one on Sunday also that I am hoping to break 24m.  I agree with everyone else that said this is a tough distance.  By the time you are really warmed up the race is over!  Hopefully with no kids the night before, or that morning, I can get a good warm up in and have a good race.

One last thing for my southern friends, we have snow predicted for tomorrow and Friday

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Nov 1st

Hey all -

Its been weeks since I posted, and unfortunately, about that long since I've run.  September and October were NOT good months in the land of eponacelt, and the stress built to the point that running was out of the question.  I postponsed my 1/2 until next spring, and hope I can get back on track with my training, although the darkness of early morning, coupled with a new (and very dark road) road to run on is making things a bit challenging.  We finally sold our house, but are living in a tiny, temporary apartment on a large farm in the middle of the vast Virginia countryside.  On the up side, walking out the front door every morning is a joy and my dogs love the farm.  The downside is no streetlights to make 5am runs possible.  At any rate, I did get out for just shy of 3 miles this morning and realized I will also have to contend with a few MONSTER hills.  THat which doesn't kill us makes us stronger, right?

I'll have to catch up on shout outs later, but here's the important one:

WAY TO GO SPICE!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Nov 1st

Good Morning All, Well what a difference a couple of days make, this morning I was going to go out and do an 8 Mile run but thanks to the wisdom of the group I cut it to just under 6 miles, really felt great, never once looked a my pace, and rarely looked at my heart rate, I completed 5.78 mile at a 9:23 pace, which felt really nice and easy.  I decided to stay on the sidewalks rather than do a trail run, thinking I don't need to hurt my self a couple days before a race, thanks to the pointer from macd019.  Tomorow I will wrap up with another 4-5 mile run light and easy just to stay loose.  While on the topic am I the only one that has dreams about running?  Last night my dream was I started my 10K to fast and by mile 4 I was completely out, and had to walk the last 2 miles, I am sure it wont come true but just weird, new distance for me so I guess I am nervous.

Spice - In you look like you are on cloud 9 in the picture, which i am sure is the case, finish the NYC Marathon and get to be with the EC Trainer.  Again You Rock!

Cyndi - You are a lucky woman to get a new iPod Nano, I have been looking at getting one but it is on the list below allot of other things.  I guess I should find a good arm band for my iPhone, but it is big and relatively heavy.  Great job on improving your times, always a goo thing to com back and look and see your pace getting better.

macd019 - Thanks again for the reminder to take it easy the week prior to the race, currently if I finish the 10K I will set my PR but point well taken.

CaryAN20 - A hill is a hill in my book, My first 5K was as flat as they come, the second one right out of the start there was a "Hill"  maybe a 20 or 30 foot rise and I was freaking out so any hill I can do now I do figure it is a great confidence boost, my last 5K there were runs up to the freeway over pass and just kept thinking oh no hill, but now I am ready for them after a couple weeks of doing hills.  We have two Weimaraners, very active dogs, I had to stop running with them back in the C25K days because the first half they were pulling me and the second half I was pulling them.

Colorado -  Great job on week 4 of Hal's plan, beleive it or not you are not the only one that has the issue with self talk, I have that issue from the starting line on, but I pull it back in and I don't try to pace with anyone I just run my own race the only person that can defeat me is me, so I go out run my race, trust my training I may not win but I am going to push my self to post a PB or a PR every time, and if I do that I and always happy.

Anjuanja - I am beginning to love the trail runs, they are quiet no cars or really any other hikers, I have to focus on the footing and trail not the distance and the other stuff that usually messed with my mojo and as I said before Hills Good.

Juli - I would guess that you ran a bit harder than normal in the half and plus it is also 3 more miles, take it slow and easy, and remember you can do it!

Rick - Good luck with your 5K this weekend and awesome goal of below 24m, I wish I were that fast but I know over time the speed will come.  Sorry to hear about the snow, we are actually back into the 90's for the next couple of days, I am hoping it will go back down by Sunday's start.

misswendy - great job on the 6 miles, slow and week are still a run, right?  at least I count them.

Have a great day all,

Jay

Thanks for your confidence in me. Cyndi I so look forward to hearing your race report, i'll be thinking of you as i run mine hoping you'll have good news and that i can do mine and make you proud. We will get this beast off our back. Just need to confront it a couple more times. right?

MissWendy..

Great 6 miles even if it's slow it's still important. In 2 weeks i will start running 6 miles as my long run so i'm envious of your slow one already.

You and I both know that you will absolutely kill it. Heck i had only run 2 5K's and i went and did a 10k a week before my triathlon. If i can do it so can you. I had never even run 5 miles at that point amazing how much you can push yourself through without even having been there. Mine was a winding and trail mostly course and i did it in 1:25 min. So have confidence and when you are out there just keep telling yourself you've got this.......good luck can't wait to hear all about it. And thanks for your kind words about me. means alot.
