Re: 5K in 9 Weeks Start 11/1

I did my W2D2 run this morning. Still had a bit of trouble catching my breath after the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th sessions, but I made it through, and even went a bit further today - about 1.9 miles total, I think. I thought it was much more pleasant running at 6 am instead of 5:30, because there was so much more light in the sky. I just don't think I'm a night-time runner...

*

For stretching, I've been following the recommended ones at http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_1/126.shtml which have been very good and easy to do.

Dadewitt - I always think the same thing: is someone wondering what the heck I'm doing, lumbering past their house at 6 in the morning? lol! Today my neighbor passed me on his motorcycle as I was about half-way through my routine, and he said something to me (probably a smart alec retort - he's that kind of guy. Nice, but sarcastic), and I think I was glad I couldn't hear him due to the headphones, so I just waved at him, pointed at the cord to the headphones, and kept on running.

KilliansGal - actually, the running beanie I bought yesterday at Target worked great for me: no more ear pain! I did some of those ear warmers you mentioned, though, and I thought that it might be a good option if this didn't work out for me. Thanks!

If you guys haven't checked out the www.c25k.com site, I recommend it- there's a lot of info on it, and links for various MP3 apps (iPod and Android compatible) with the running/walking cues, as well as running tools, and inspirational information. Enjoy!

Re: 5K in 9 Weeks Start 11/1

Hi everyone!  Reading all of your posts is really encouraging me to start the C25K again!  I started and finished to week 7 in the spring of 2008 until I became pregnant with my son!  I have lost all of the my baby weight, but really need to get out and do something active!  I am a 36 year old mother of a 3 year old daughter and 9 month old son and work part time as a nurse practitioner.  It has been difficult to find the time to start W1D1!  Someone is always taking a nap, eating, or whatever!  I am in desperate need of motivation and accountability!!  I have the gear and the podcasts, just need the oomph to get out the door!!!  Hope to start this evening (when my husband gets home) or early tomorrow morning (before he goes to work!).

I agree with you on the "not a night runner" comment. I completed my w1d2 this morning and I just wasn't comfortable outside alone at that time, lol.

thanks for the link to stretching ideas!

Good Luck Everyone, Of course my podcast is the best! If I did it weighing well over 200 lbs then you can do it too.  Check out my blog for inspirational stories about my weight loss journey to fitness.

Re: 5K in 9 Weeks Start 11/1

I've always wanted to be one of those people that gets up in the wee hours of the morning and goes running, then eats a healthy breakfast, reads the paper, pays the bills and has answered all her emails by 8 am.  But I'm not.  I'm the type of persn that gets a second wind at 10 pm and is up until 2 am.  I'm a night-owl.  Consequently, I do my running after work, about 6 pm.  So, if I see a runner go by my house at 3 am or even 6 am, there's a good chance it's because I haven't been to bed yet.

I also run on a treadmill in my living room because the idea of being seen in public running makes me hyperventilate because I'm pretty large.  (XXXL, to be more precise.)  I know I'll have to go outside to run sometime.  I don't think anyone offers a 5K race on treadmills.  And I'm probably the only person that uses an MP3 player with voice cues only, no music.  HAHA!  I just have to be different apparently.

I did W1D2 tonight.  Again...wanted to die.  Lungs heaving, legs burning.  But my feet were ok, and if the feet are ok, then the rest of me will just have to pony up and deal with it!  I'm sure they'll get used to it eventually.  Right???  Sure they will.  *Eek!*  Anyway, it wasn't pretty, but I DID IT!  And that's what counts right now.

My C25K is on a Sun-Wed-Fri schedule, but I want to start yoga on my "relax" days to help with my flexibility and breathing.  Does anyone else do yoga at home that could recommend a good beginners yoga dvd or program?  There aren't any affordable yoga classes where I live.

Thanks everyone and keep up the great work!!!

Re: 5K in 9 Weeks Start 11/1

I lol'd at your comment of wanting to get up early and get everything finished before 8am!  I'm pretty sure that's how I got into theatre in the first place!!  I'm also that crazy person running down the street at 11pm!

I don't do yoga, but I'm in love with my Wii Fit during the days I'm not running.  Best part is you don't really realize you're working out until the next morning when muscles you didn't realize you had hurt!!

Keep up the good work, D2 for me will be when I get home from work tomorrow.  About 10:30pm!

Re: 5K in 9 Weeks Start 11/1

BabeBrewmeister - Too funny! If I wasn't taking care of a toddler full time I'd be more willing to do stuff at night. But these days I'm so freaking tired by the time he goes to sleep I just want to lay on the couch and rest. Takes all kinds, right? Also, I've done Yoga at home at times, and I use this video (The Method - Precision Yoga) to do it. It's not somewhere between relaxing and hard, but I like the way she gives instruction. Are you a Netflix member? I bet you could check out a few videos and see which you like before buying one. My library has a pretty good selection of fitness videos, so if yours does, too, that might be another place to check.

bwaybaby01 - It's good to hear that you like the Wii Fit. I got the Wii last year with Christmas monies, and I have gotten a couple of games in addition to the Sports game that came with it, but I keep looking at the Fit (and now the Active) bundles I see in the store. Maybe someday.

Re: 5K in 9 Weeks Start 11/1

Babebrewmeister you are my hero!!  I relate to you on so many levels.  Do you have Comcast on demand?  I do some yoga through the free exercise tv section.  It's pretty good.  They also have a good pilates one on there as well.

I"m in so much stinking pain from Monday's workout still.  But from what I keep hearing is that if I just run through it it won't feel so bad.  So tomorrow I"m getting back out there and do w1d2 come hell or high water.  That way I can get w1d3 in on Saturday before the week is over with.  I've sat out two days now.  That should be enough.   I'm taking these stretching instructions someone posted earlier along tomorrow too.

Thank you everyone who puts out suggestions on here.  I'm so new at this and really haven't a clue.  Any bits of info really does help.

And finally, I just wanted to add that the only cougar I need to fear on my runs is myself!!!

Re: 5K in 9 Weeks Start 11/1

Thanks for the welcome and "push" banshee!  It helps to read how others are doing with the program too!!  Well, I DID IT!!  Started W1D1 last night when my husband got home to watch the kids!  It was not all that bad!  I felt great during most of the runs until the last one, which was a little harder.  All in all, proud to have done it!  This morning, however, my legs and knees are pretty sore.  Not so I can't walk, but still sore.  Actually looking forward to W1D2!!!  Keep up the great work everyone!!

Re: 5K in 9 Weeks Start 11/1

Bwaybaby01 - Hey!  I used to do community theater.  I started out acting, but I don’t sing so for the musicals they always asked me to stage manage.  That was the kiss-of-death!  Once you stage manage in community theater they don’t want you for anything else because no one else wants that lousy job.  That’s why I say “I used to” do it.  I’m envious of you pros though!

JustLindsay - Thanks for the video tip.  I keep forgetting about Netflix!  I have to get that.  The library is not a reasonable option for me.  When the iron curtain came down and the cold war with Russia ended in the late 80’s, the KGB got jobs running our town library and they haven’t updated any of the media there since.  Also, there’s a yearly charge to use the library of $50 per person.  Somewhere along the way they forgot what the word “public” in “public library” meant.

Ok, both of you have reminded me that I have a Wii Fit too.  In fact it fits so well under my TV that I forgot it’s there.  And the Wii Active fits so well next to my dvd player that it never even made it out of the box.  You’ve shamed me into admitting I have them.   I shall have to get it out and use it!  That’s if the batteries in the balance board and the wiimotes aren’t dead. LOL!

SusanP1114 - I don’t have Comcast on demand.  But while checking that out I found one of the thousand channels I do have is FitTV!  They have lots of shows I will have to check out.  Including Shimmy - the belly dancing workout!  I’m gonna Tivo that and try it!  It’s not the strangest thing in the world I’ve tried, but I’m guessing it will look like it!  I should probably check my homeowner's insurance policy to see if this will be covered because between that and the Wii Fit something's going to get broken.  I just hope it's not me!

I’m sorry you’re in so much pain.  I don’t have any suggestion except drink lots of water.  In my past life (aka two husbands ago) I used to run and I got leg pains at night.  It was from not drinking enough water.  I don’t know if that will help you, but it’s all I got.  Sorry.  Good luck with w1d2 tomorrow!  Hang in there!!!

Well, turns out I have more resources at hand than I thought.  I have officially run out of excuses.  Thank you and good luck everyone!!!

Re: 5K in 9 Weeks Start 11/1

babebrewmeister -

About the Yoga, I like to fit in Yoga a couple times a week, allot of times I do it when I get home from a walk/run to stretch or in the evenings with my hubby. I have gone over and over different yoga DVD's and found one I really like called "Yoga for Wimps" I know -- it's a terrible title. I like it as it is 30 minutes, the basics nothing crazy, works on your core, the instructor is not irritating and she gives you great tips on your form. Overall, I love it.. and so does my husband and he is an even bigger critic than me.

You might find it at your local library to atleast try it..?

We have also been working the P90X, however I am so out of shape that at this point it is more frustrating than anything. However, if you are somewhat in good shape I think the P90X yoga is a good all-around program, a little tough but fun to do.

Let me know if you come across one you like.. variety is the spice of life!
