Weight training question

Quick question regarding weight training.  I recently started weight training to enhance my running and improve my times.  When working on my legs, I find that my quads are significantly stronger than my hamstrings.  Do I need to weight train my hamstrings more and the quads less or not at all until this levels out so both the quads and the hamstrings have similar strength?  I don't want to train my quads at the heavier weights and develop them more and continue to have this imbalance with my weaker hamstrings.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Cyndi

Re: Weight training question

How do you want to improve your times? What distance? sprint or 5k or longer?

If longer, I think you should concentrate on fartlek, tempo runs, running uphills. It's much better and more effective

Good luck

I am now training for a marathon.

Re: Weight training question

Your quads will always be stronger than your hamstrings.  They are a much larger muscle group.

If you were to train your hamsrings only until they were the same strength you would then become "unbalanced".

Re: Weight training question

Cyndi,

Squats and lunges. They are compound exercises that when performed properly can build strength for speed or promote mitochondrial growth for endurance.

Studies have shown, runners that perform resistance exercise can have greater speed gains than those that do not.

Stay away from the leg extensions and leg curl machines, they can cause undo stress on the joints.
