ok i am dieing to do my first sprint. the last one in my area for this season is 6 weeks from now. my training has been minimal (spin classes 3x's week, weight trainig, biking in subdivision) nothing organized for a race. Will I have enough time to be ready to be able to finish a sprint with six weeks training or should prepare for next season? open for any sugestions. thanks
can you handle the swim? if no can you get ready to cover that idstance in 6 weeks? if no again then skip it. you can coast on the bike and walk the run but it's a horrible idea to try and bluff the swim
Good point. I have been focusing my training on the bike and run and have put off the swim, simply cause it is less convenient for me right now. I do have intensions on getting a few sessions in with a trainer to develope proper tecniques with the swim, It's just that I found this sprint that is not too far from my area and was thinking that it might be good to if nothing else get a race under my belt before next season. As of right now my very first race ever will be an xtera dualthlon in October.
Thanks for the comment!
Joe I took your advice and let me say thank you. I looked into getting some training on the swim and found a local training facility that speializes in competitive swim ( indoors of course). Yeah, I'm in swimming lessons, I admit it. Had my first training class today and was given drills to do for an hour, thought i was going to die. I definatly would not have had a good experience on my "first event" going in with out being prepared for a .5 mi swim. Anyway I signed up for a 6 month contract and plan to make my weakest leg my strongest for next year. Thanks again
Very cool. I'm glad you found a venue for swim lessons. I've taken a great swim clinic 2x in Wisconsin and learned a ton each time. I love learning, and since I don't have a swim background, I'm always ready to learn something new that will help me swim more efficiently!
Like Joe said, the swim is hard to fake and is where most race accidents occur. I'm excited to read how your swim training goes & how strong & confident you feel in the water for your future event!!
Enjoy,
Sara
I started this thread with intentions of doing a sprint TRI. Thanks to all for shedding some light on the swim portion of the race. Last weekend I participated in my first event, an adventure duathlon which consisted of a 2 mi bike, 8 mi run, and 2 mi bike (all off-road). We were running/biking thru 6 to 10 inches of mud/water/slop for about 80% of the course. went off course twice, so lost time and effort once on the first run and again on the bike(the course was flagged orange for run and pink for bike--it all looked the same when the sun hit it). I dont know the times of each individual leg but my overall time was 1:28:41 which placed me 17 of 30 in my age group 30 -39. even though this was a duathlon and not a triathlon I trained for the swim (just because I need swim time for next years TRI events). My training for the run and bike was always on asphalt so I definately was not prepared for the terrain. some of the course we had to walk our bikes thru the slop. Overall the conditions were horrible it was WET and COLD but I didnt care, I had the time of my life out there, It was fun, really fun. I can not wait to do it again next year.
Congrats on your race--sounds like a good time. I want to do one of the xtera tri's next year as well.
I realize your post is old and the original question is no longer relivant, but I just finished my first sprint tri (750m open water, 12m bike, 3.1m run) and I only trianed for 6 weeks. I hadn't swam in years so I concentrated heavily on that. I swam about 2x's per week and eventually got comfortable swimming 1000m in the pool. I made it through the swim with my fastest split time of any portion, but about 2/3 through the swim I definately became thankful that I had rented a wetsuit as the floatation was helpful in catching my breath and relaxing a little bit as the waves hit me.
I'd like to work up to longer tri's in the next couple years and I think getting some formal swim training will be a good idea.
Wow, that sounds tough, especially that you trained on asphalt - big change biking/runing in the muck! I'm glad you had fun. I hope you had someone there to take some muddy post-race pictures!
Well done,
Sara
