Swimming - first 200 yards

When I start a swim, either in a pool or open water, I feel that I need to stop to take a few deep breaths.  Seems I struggle during the period whan I first get my heart rate up.  Once I am over that hrudle I can finish the half mile pretty well.  Anyone have any ideas?

I have the same problem with that and when I am running.  If anyone has any helpful hints that would be great!

It could depend on your level of competitiveness. If you're an upper level athlete you should expect the adrenaline surge. Consider concentrating on your stroke mechanics and breath rythm control to settle yourself down. Perhaps you're less competitive, let the crazies go. Relax, let them enjoy the panic of the start and keep your head together and enter the water with calm and comfort. Again, concentrate on your breathing and stroke.
