What to eat during taper?

So, I'm in my last 2 weeks before the Philly Marathon (so excited that there are other marathon virgins on this site doing it also) and I'm in the taper stage. I have 15 tomorrow and then next Saturday I have 9. And I'm generally doing about 15 miles during the week at this stage.

Here's my question- I don't want any extra pounds to sneak up on me before the marathon. I know I run better when I don't have the unnecessary weight. But, I also want to fuel my body properly so that I'm getting enough calories & nutrition in.

So, what do you eat say on teh week (or 2) leading up to the marathon? Do you change your diet much at all?

I am very good at getting lots of water in. I dont drink coffee or sodas or alcohol (other than my 2 beers on a Saturday night- i need to live a little). I eat a lot of fruits & veggies, a decent amount of carbs, i don't eat much meat, but I do eat low fat dairy and nuts & beans for protein.

Any thoughts? TIA

Re: What to eat during taper?

Jeanie,

Congrats on your running your First Marathon, It sounds like you have a great Diet, and it sounds like mine. What I do and I would suggest is cut down an your carbs maybe 20 to 30 percent and just replace them with fruit and veggies until a day to two before the race then start your normal carb intake. Continue to drink lots of water and stay away from anything you havent try before durning your training.

Its going to be tough and your mind will think its going crazy with all the short miles youll be doing over the next 2 weeks, but hang in there youll get through it.

Youve done the training, now enjoy the ride Im sure youll do Awesome.....

Re: What to eat during taper?

Calorie-wise, I treated the first week of taper as if it were half marathon training (since the long run that week was 13 mi). I then treated the second week of taper as if it were 10K training (since the long run that week was 9 mi). I continued at that level halfway through the third week of taper and then did some carbo-feeding for the last 3 days - same general number of calories per day but increased % carbohydrates to about 70%. Other than the extra % carbs in the last 3 days, I didn't change the composition of what I was eating, just the amounts. I had no problem maintaining weight.
