running in the dark - flashlight? headlamp? other?

Does anyone out there run in the dark and use either a flashlight or headlamp or something else?  I've decided that it would be much safer to use some sort of light when running in the dark (to see cracks, roots, sticks, ice and whatever else might be waiting to turn an ankle).  I'm pretty sure I would not like wearing a headlamp and holding a flashlight seems like it would put my hand in an unnatural and uncomfortable position for running.  I thought about rigging up a headlamp by shortening the strap and wearing it across my knuckles, thus allowing it to point forward while in a natural running position. I mainly run in a park with street lights in some areas but not all.  Some parts are just plain dark.

So, my questions are:

1. What are pros and cons of a flashlight vs. a headlamp?

2. If you use a headlamp, how many lumens and is it bright enough?

3. Is the headlamp-strapped-to-a-hand idea ridiculous?

I'll hang up now and listen to your response...

Thanks,

Joe

Re: running in the dark - flashlight? headlamp? other?

i run 100% in the dark - 4:15am each morning - my longer runs finish isn the light but obviously - you need to see in the dark - btw - LOVE running in the dark - street to yourself, quiet etc - anyway

1. never used a flashlight - but the headlamp should go on your head and believe me - after awhile you wont even realize its on your head - i have a princeton tec - it cost about fifty bucks but the light angle is adjustable

2. i forget how many lumens (i got the one for 50 at dicks - i just checked the lamp and it doesnt say - it was the brightest they had) and def bright enough - goes thru batts quick so i click it off (easy enough) when in sections lit by streetlights

3. yes - put it on your head

enjoy

edit: i also wear a reflector vest and led blinker - more important than seeing where u are going is other people being able to see where u are going

and dont worry about looking funny with a headlamp on - its early (or late) and no one really cares - btw - try throwing on some camo vibrams and then you'll feel funny:)

I use a petzl headlamp I got on Amazon.com for maybe twenty bucks.  I love it.  it's adjustable and stretchy and has different settings.  I have to run in the dark sometimes because otherwise, I wouldn't get a run in.  When it's really dark and I am running out on my rural roads at home, it's almost a tunnel effect.  Very cool and I'll tell ya, when a car comes along, I am glad to be lit up.

I wear it over my baseball cap.  I don't even feel it.

Re: running in the dark - flashlight? headlamp? other?

I've never used a flashlight to run.  Always a headlamp.  They are great.

I use MicroLites.  Very small.  Very powerful LEDs.  Cost only $8 at Outdoor World.  They weigh only an once or two.  I put two on the front of the bill of my cap.  I can see the road/path in front of me  ...  and better yet the bikes can see me.  I put a red one on the back of my cap so riders can see me as they approach from that direction.

I am astounded at how many runners and bikers are on the paths in the dark.  Seems like a disasterous formula to me.

^ I agree.  I rode home on the bike path the other night, lit up like a Christmas tree, and almost killed a few unlit runners and bikers.  I had take it at a snail's pace to avoid colliding with the unseen.  And of course, they all wear black!!!

Re: running in the dark - flashlight? headlamp? other?

I haven't totally figured this out either... today, I had my best run ever! When I got home from work I just knew I should go out and run. Problem - it's dark and not even 6pm! So for today's run my answer was to wear a white shirt and run in front of dh on his bicycle which has a headlamp. I think the headlamp on your hand would be a solution that I could use too... you can move it around where needed instead of just having it on your head. My grandson asked me to buy him some reflective tape, and I am going to make some sort of bracelet / anklelet things with it for running in the dark.

There's no need to make your own reflective ankle band or other gear -- hundreds of products exist for little money. Here's one example:

Headlamp on head seems to work best.  On your head the light is always pointing where you are looking.  It is a little strange, bouncing on the forehead but you get used to it.  I have one of the $20 pretzel lamps with 2 LEDs, 2 intensity settings and it needs 2 or 3 AAA batteries, .   It really freaks out drivers sometimes.
