Question about base mileage

Hello, everyone!  I have recently completed the C25K program, and am currently working on completing Hal Higdon's Novice 10K training to work up to a 10K distance.  I really enjoy running, and am trying to get stronger and healthier as I work towards some races next year.  My biggest goal run for next year is to run the OBX 1/2 Marathon in November 2010.  I realize I don't need to be running half marathon distances all that time...but what should be my "base" mileage in the time before starting my actual half training in the middle of next year? Is there a suggested distance? I'm not a speedy runner...not competing for time, just enjoying the runs and want to see where I can go from here.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Question about base mileage

Congrats on your progress so far!  I took a similar route.  I did several 5k's first then trained for a couple 10k's and then my 1st 1/2. Once you do your first 10k, I would keep my long run day at 7 or 8 miles - then you are always at a 10k level, until your 1/2 training starts. Of course everyone is different. Good Luck and stay healthy

Re: Question about base mileage

I am shooting for the same goal. I just starting running in July and did 5ks every weekend til Columbus day until my first 10K which was in Boston. I did alot better than I thought. I have my 2nd 10K tomorrow. My goal is to do a 1/2 marathon by Sep 2010.  I need to start running on the treadmill since winter is coming....

Re: Question about base mileage

i have the "half marathon, you can do it" from feff galloway.  i also am heading for a 5K.;...then a 10....then to the half.

in his book and training schedule, week one is:  monday off    tues   30 minute run   weds off  thursday 30 minute run...friday easy walk

saturday off   sunday one mile.

i think you could jump right into that program.  i think you can get the schedule online also.  also, week six would be a place for you to start too....because the last day is a a 3.5 mile run.

another great author/marathoner is tom holland.   the most you will run in preparation is 11 miles with holland's approach, and 14 with galloway.  my opinion is that you don't need to run 13 miles before the actual race.  if you are strong with 10 miles, 13 is no big deal.

check out both books.....they are good...with a few differences, and you can adapt to what works for you.  good luck!

Re: Question about base mileage

25 miles per week is generally a good base mileage before you begin a half marathon training program. Most people say you can run a HM if you can do 10 miles but I personally wanted to be sure I could cover the distance at least a few times and a little more before I ran my HM.  I topped my long run out at 15 miles, a couple of 14's and a couple of 13's but thats me.  I used Runners World.com smart coach to develop my 12 week HM training plan. Good luck!
