Re: Spring Marathon Trainers' Thread -- 12/10
M: 6.01mi (8:52)
T: 9.5mi incl road repeats - 1:40@6:01p, 3x5:00@6:18p, 3min@6:05p, 2min@6:14p (wimp)
W: 6.01mi (8:50)
R: 12mi (8:09) incl 2x2mi@tempo pace, which turned out to be about 10s/mi slower than planned
F: 6.17mi (8:32)
Sa: 8mi (8:15) incl 10x30s strides
Su: 16.45mi incl half-marathon. 1:32:03, 3rd OA, not a PR and not the pace I'd hoped for.

total: 64.1 miles

The half was interesting because after the first mile, I ran completely alone. There were some fellas about 100m in front of me, but I declined to chase them because I was trying to hold a specific pace and didn't want to waste energy running down some guy. But I did end up doing a considerable amount of daydreaming during the middle miles, and fell off pace somewhat, only recovering after mile 10. I never did hit the bad patch that usually comes between 8 and 10, but I couldn't make up the lost seconds either. This tells me I didn't push hard enough today. Last year I ran this race about 90s faster.

On the other hand, the week wasn't a total loss: I was happy about the paces of Tuesday's road repeats. 3 weeks ago I'd have clawed my way to 6:40 pace and puked afterward.

Re: Spring Marathon Trainers' Thread -- 12/10
As I mentioned in another thread, I focused on the JFK50 and then spent a couple weeks injured - just "coming back" now - and MAYBE I'll be running

==> PHOENIX ROCK 'N' ROLL 14 JAN WITH A GOAL OF 3:20:59! <==

I'm already registered for it, but it depends on how training goes the next few weeks...

I'm doing what may be one of the dumbest things possible - coming off a torn calf muscle with 2 1/2 weeks healing - and jumping into Pfitz 12/55 at week #5.

Go ahead and tell me not to do that, but I'm one of those hard-headed guys that has to learn this stuff the hard way!

Actually, I've got quite a good base down from the last few months and performed VERY well at the JFK50, so 26.2 looks like a "short race" now! I just have to cross my fingers that my injury is recovered enough to take the training and the race.

So, this week looked like:
Wed - 6 miles ramping up/down to MP (7:30)
Thurs - 12 miles easy (8:30)
Fri - Off
Sat - 5 miles recovery (9:30)
Sun - 20 miles long (5 * 9:00, 10 * 8:40, 5 * 8:15)

Actually, today's 20-miler was the REAL test and it went very well - the best I've every felt at the end of a 20 mile training run - although I did feel a slight tightness in my right calf starting about mile 16 - stopped three times to stretch it out in the last four miles.

During my prior marathon training I had a pattern of "every other LSD went well and the ones in between SUCKED" - so I'm very happy that I've got such a base down now that this one was pretty easy.

That's the news gang - glad I checked this thread because I didn't know where a mid-January Marathon would fit in our thread system - considering that Winter technically starts less than a month before this race!

Re: Spring Marathon Trainers' Thread -- 12/10
Nice running joplus and kestrou.

My week was not stellar (uh oh, looks like a theme the last couple of weeks). However, it was freezing here (think 4 degrees with a below zero wind chill of 15-20 mph).

M - Rest
T - 6.21 (8:25) - the cold got me moving!
W - pilates
R - pilates and 3.25 on the treadmill
F- rest
Sa. - 5K - hoping for a PR, but I ended up running it slower than my 10K pace!!!
Su - rest today. I was going to do a Christmas lights run tonight, but my ankle hurts and since I am starting the Pfitz 18/55 tomorrow, no need to push anything.

So my race was terrible Saturday. I was really hoping for a PR despite the bad weather...but I did not even come close. I was successful in starting out at a reasonable pace (also in part because the field was so crowded, there was ice everywhere to focus on and there were a couple big hills). I actually hit mile 1 much slower than I would have liked. I picked up the pace a bit (not dramatically) and by mile 1.6 I got a horrendous side stitch. I am talking full knife in the between the ribs stitch. I had to stop 2x. Who the heck walks 2x in a 5K?!?!?! I ended up coming in 23:20 or something. 10 days ago I did a 21:25 with terrible pacing. Needless to say I was bummed. THe worst part was that my stitch just won't go away. I still have the thing today! Of course it is not a stabbing pain, but when I get moving, it takes my breath away somewhat. I really need to figure out why I got it - there was a big downhill and those tend to get me sometimes and it was also pretty windy (and I mean frigid windy). Who knows?

Oh well. My off season is officially over tomorrow.

Re: Spring Marathon Trainers' Thread -- 12/10
(NEW THREAD ENTRY HERE)
I'm recovering from injury, but it's going well enough that I'm going to ask for one of my running club's time-waived Boston Marathon entries. I've run marathons before between 3:30 and 4:20. This spring, so far, I'm shooting for just finishing in one piece. If my training goes well, I'll add in a goal time.

This week was my first over-40-mile week in a couple of years. Getting healthier feels good. My iliacus, especially on my left side, had a habit of tightening up so painfully I had to slow down. I found a trainer who could teach me a new way of standing/walking/running, and do massages and limb-manipulations, and teach me some exercises.

This week had a 17 mile long run, An 8 miler with a 20-minute tempo run in the middle, a 13-mile intermediate-long run with a faster pace in the last few miles, a couple of shorter easy days, and days off before & after the long run, for a total of a tad over 42.

Re: Spring Marathon Trainers' Thread -- 12/10
Nice race joplus!! It can really suck to run alone. I'm glad the workout went better this week!

runninlaw-I used to get side-stitches all the time. I haven't had one in a few months now. However, after not having one for over a month I started to notice it felt like I had one all of the time. It hurt when I slept on my right side especially. It got progressively worse over a week or so and I ultimately ended up in the ER it hurt so bad. Turned out I had pleurisy!! The moral of the story is that you should see a doctor if it doesn't go away. As for the stitches, I only feel like I'm on the verge of one every once in a while if I'm stressed out. Otherwise I think it was just a matter of being in better shape now so I don't really get them anymore. I hope yours was just an isolated incident!

Anyway here's my week:

Su - 16 easy miles around the hood. Nice rolling hills. I took it very easy since it was my first long run of this cycle and I ran a race the day before.

Mo - 6 easy miles on the tm (8:45)

Tu - 8 outside in the dark with a friend at ~8:30 pace

We - 6 easy outside on city sidewalks

Th - 8 on the tm (8:30)

F - 6 outside on trails

Sa - 6 around the hood (~8:20)

Total = 56

Somewhere in there I manged to give myself a minor muscle strain in my left calf--probably running tentatively on ice on Tuesday night. I walk a little funny but running's just fine

Good weeks everyone!!

Re: Spring Marathon Trainers' Thread -- 12/10
HELP! It suddenly dropped to 18 degrees last Friday. I can't get my long runs in on a treadmill but find it very difficult to run when the wind chill is in the single digits. Any advice? I'm training for a May marathon, and I was following the Pfitz. 24 week schedule without a problem until now. It's clearly mental...any winter runners out there?

M: rest
T: 8 miles at steady pace, plus strides. Felt great
W: 10 miles
T: 5 easy
F: 4 miles. Tried to do 10 but it was unbelievably cold and I couldn't deal with it.
S: rest
S; 6 w/ 3 @ tempo

There's something wrong with me. I like running in the cold and snow. Maybe its some form of fallout from the awful DC summer. Anyway, it's the dark that bugs me.

Another mediocre/lousy week tainted by illness and burnout last weekend

S: off
M: off
Tu: 8.5 tempo (5 miles @ 88-90% max HR)
W: 6.3 @ recovery
Th: 3.2 @ recovery (ran out of time and had to get home)
F: 16 (blustery blustery blustery)
Sa: rest

Tot: 34 miles and 5.5 hours. Time to crank it up to mid 40s this week (Pfitz 55 mpw plan).

Yeah, I am one of those people who loves to run in 90% humidity. But if anyone on this thread happens to be in the NYC area and wants to meet up for a weekly long run let me know, Maybe having a buddy once a week will make it easier to get out the door.
