Reporter seeking training info: cold weather

Hello everyone,

I'm a reporter from the University of Florida doing a feature on training for marathons in cold weather and I was wondering if any marathoners in the northern states would be willing to let me interview them about how cold-weather training differs from normal training. If you're wondering why someone in Florida is asking about cold weather, well, it's part of a much larger project about how the body reacts differently in different weather conditions.

Even if you don't want to be formally interviewed (by phone or email), feel free to throw out tips, as I've never run more than a mile at a time in my life and I could use all the help I can get.

If you do want to be interviewed, email me at taylorprovost@ufl.edu and we'll set something up.

Thanks,

Taylor Provost

Re: Reporter seeking training info: cold weather

Well all my cold weather runs occur at altitude, which means my muscles will :1) require a high source of calorie input, and 2) only be able to reach Max Output for shorter periods before fatigue sets in.

The big factor is what cold air can do to your breathing. All other concerns can be handled by wearing warmer shoes for instance. So by all means cover your hands with at least some liner-weight gloves, since for me they can distract focus when focus is most vital.

Heading out for my three miler now,

so long,

mark
