Re: Are you over fifty and doing the C25k?

Hi Jess and thanks for the welcome! I am getting very excited about being a part of this group and I am determined that I am going to finish this program! I really need to listen to the advice of not stopping my run early or when it gets difficult early in the run. I am not worried about endurance, I have great endurance, but have very weak ankles. Hopefully they will build in strength along the way. I am going to bring my Mother to my home today and keep her with me until Sunday so I will be all ready to begin the C25K on Monday! Mimi

Re: Are you over fifty and doing the C25k?

Good Morning Jess! No, I would never push myself through pain! That is a sure way of injury and at almost 57, I do not want that! I can walk very briskly and my ankles to not bother me. I can also hike and they do not bother me. My ankles start to bother me after about 5 min jogging, but I would not describe it as a pain, just bothersome. I think this is mostly because I am not used to jogging and maybe my foot is not striking correctly. My ankles do not bother me as much on the treadmill as they do on pavement. I also think that I need new shoes for running. What kind of shoes do most of you recommend for beginning running? I am not going to let my ego get in the way of this. I want to do this program correctly and if I have to repeat a week, then I most assuredly will!

Another question? Have any of you been successful in losing some weight along the way with this program? I need to lose about 10 lbs. and I hope that this will be the catalyst that I need to jump start that!

    Mimi

Re: Are you over fifty and doing the C25k?

I did week 4 twice, struggled with the last 5 min run the first week. Second week went fine. Just started week 5, three 5 min runs, stopped because the 5 min was up, not cuz I had to. WOW. Looking forward to the 8 min runs on Sunday, not sure if slowing down a bit helped or I'm getting more conditioned, but I love it.

Re: Are you over fifty and doing the C25k?

I signed up for a race on Thanksgiving! I couldn't find a 5K only 5 milers which I am not ready for; still pretty slow and heavy so I signed up for a 2 miler and then a 5K later in December. I did 2.2 miles today (36 min) and hope to do more tomorrow.

Re: Are you over fifty and doing the C25k?

    Hi Everyone,

I just finished W1D3. I was planning to do it yesterday afternoon after hiking with friends in the morning. Except that we hiked for three hours and I was beat. I didn't think I should push it, especially since I had a little difficulty. For some reason, I felt like my stamina during the hike wasn't at the level it usually is. I felt slow and not a lot of energy almost from the beginning of the hike. Do you think it might have been because I've been doing the running and I'm not used to that? I did D1 on Monday and D2 on Wednesday, so I had two days rest before the hike. Today I felt much better so did some shopping earlier today (for running and hiking clothes) and I felt good during this running session. Tuesday I'll start W2D1. How is everyone else doing?

Re: Are you over fifty and doing the C25k?

I just finished week 3 and a little hesitant about week 4 not sure if I should change my route. I found the last minute of the last 3minute run and 1st minute of the cool down is all uphill!! I had to keep telling myself to keep going that I could do it...and I did and as always felt great afterwards but really had to push it. I'm going to give week 4 a start tomorrow morning but I've read on a lot of the threads that people repeat week 4 frequently....trying not to psyche myself out...I don't look on the training plan ahead of time I just go with that weeks podcast and do my best! I also have felt out of energy lately and don't know if it's the running or the time change and the early darkness...just less energy...anyone else feeling it?

Great job Susan! Congrats on W4 being better than you thought.

You are all giving me such motivation to get out there and get my run in today. I will be doing W1D1 after work today and I am anxious to get started.

I hope that I can do as well as all of you seem to be doing. Wish me luck this afternoon! Mimi

Re: Are you over fifty and doing the C25k?

    Hi Mimi

I've been trying to lose my extra 25 pounds for a couple of years now.  Walking wasn't really helping with that, but running has made a difference.  Since I took running in May, I've been eating a healthy diet and I'm down about 15 pounds - slowly and steadily, which is probably the best way.  I'm sure that the running has made the difference, especially because it made me feel like I was putting more effort into being healthy, which in turn helped me stick to my eating plan.

Good luck with that 10 pounds!

    Meg

Re: Are you over fifty and doing the C25k?

I'm 63 years old went thru the c25k program like a hot knife thur warm butter  I had started walking while on vacation at the end of June so I skipped the first few weeks of the c25k and picked it up at week 5.  Ran my first 5k ten days ago and now running 10k and upwards every other day just for the hell of it.  Other than running a mile in high school and a mile at the end of basic training I have never run or thought about enjoying it.  Three years ago I weighted over three hundred pounds and this spring when it first occured to me to run  I couldn't run four steps.  Raw vegan diet a little yaga, some fasting a wala .....track star!

Re: Are you over fifty and doing the C25k?

Good Morning! Thanks for the well wishes on my first day of "running school" Jess!

Hi Meg! Like you I have been walking for a long time, but just not losing the weight. I told my husband when I decided to do the C25K that walking was just not doing it for me anymore and that I needed something that my body is not used to in order to lose those 10 pesky pounds! I think this may do it.

Well, I have completed W1D1!! It was actually very very easy and I could have gone longer than the 30 min. (5 Warm Up, 20 min, 5 Cool Down) but I did not continue. I am going to do this program as prescribed. I was very surprised that I could do the 60 min jogs with no problem. I had to be careful to not run to fast and slowed down several times. I know that I need to start this program at a slower pace and the work up to my speed. I did my jogs by time instead of distance. I clocked 2.2 miles in the 30 min. So I guess that is pretty good for my first day at "running school"!

I really would like to do W1D2 tonight, but I will wait until tomorrow and do my weight workout tonight.

Thanks for the support! This is a great site and you all are very motivational!

    Mimi
