Anyone experiencing amennorrhea? I'm 43 and stopped having my period about 8 months ago. Hormone tests show I am not in menopause. I'm currently training for the Ironman and logging in about 12-16 hours/week of exercise. I'm lean but not that lean (5'6", 120 lbs.) Thinking I wasn't getting enough calories, I tried increasing my calories but found myself putting on weight. I think it might have to do with a high protein/moderate carb diet I was following. I've changed my eating but nothing is happening. Any suggestions?
Srayko, did you ever receive a response regarding your post? I am 40, similar size and training routine and experiencing the same issue. My hormone tests also indicate I am not in menopause. Thanks!
Amenorrhea commonly happens when you cut back too much on fuel and create too much of a calorie deficit. When your body doesn't have enough fuel to function normally, it ceases menses to save calories. The problem is, this is abnormal and can lead to stress fractures and premature osteopororis.
To help resolve this problem, add about 100 calories a day every four days, to get your body out of "hibernation". You likely need an additional 500 calories. If you want more information, please see the chapter on "Dieting Gone Awry" in my Sports Nutrition Guidebook.
