Re: Starting C25k tomorrow 9/29. Anyone want to Join?

Congratulations to everyone who completed the 5K today.

I did it too..and just like you, Karen, I have 2 weeks to go in  the C25K program.. I walked a little in the middle, but ran a lot at the beginning and a little at the end. My time was really slow (58 minutes) but I listened to everyone who said, do not worry about your time..build your endurance..So I kept telling myself that.

Thank you to all for words of encouragement because I would not have done it if it weren't for all the great postings..

Special thank you to Jess, Kendra anf Karen and everyone else for your words of encouragement.

Karen, great job and also so glad to hear that one of your sons ran with you. My daughter ran with me and that was wonderful..She's a bit older, an adult and it was great to do it with her..She has beeen inspiring me all through training.

    Re: Races

Hey Jess, mega Thanks to you. We ran 38 minutes not 28 minutes. I think I kinda gave up at that point. And I felt awful. Then we walked for five minutes. Yep, my son loved the race. He is really looking forward to our next 5K in January. At the next race they will have a kids fun 1/4 race that my 7 y/o son and 5 y/o daughter can run. They can't wait. lol. The weather was good. No rain, thank goodness. Our whole gang went to IHOP after the race to celebrate.

Some super racer friends of ours were at the race. We all used to go to church together a few years ago. Boy are they fast! Our friend's 10 y/o son took second place in his age group at 24:24. His 12 y/o sister had a time in the 28:13.  Their dad, 46 did 26:51.  They tried not to laugh when we told them our time. Ha ha. The dad said, "Hey, you gotta start somewhere." True.

Another friend of ours ran a 19:56 minute race. He is 16.

Wow. You are gonna be tired Jess. I go into work tomorrow night.

It was really precious to run with my 10 y/o. He needed some coaching. I am really blessed to have the opportunity to help him gently with him breathing. I had to keep telling him to slow down. He would run way too fast and then run out of gas and walk. He would then fall behind me then he would run to catch up with me and I would tell him to slow down again. I know one day he will probably coach me. I know he will surpass me one day soon. He has asthma too, well controlled, but it's there. I was very proud of him.

Let me tell you my thighs are a little sore but I feel totally different than I did last Thanksgiving. I noted that as I was cleaning up the kitchen tonight that my feet didn't hurt at all. Last year my back was sore and my feet hurt. Not this year, not even after my race and all the cooking. Progress...

Awesome job, everyone!  Glad you all finished, and with some really impressive times.

My official time was 57:24 for 8k, which is a pace of 11:33/mile.  Not as good as the 5k pave of 11:00/mile, but it was a much longer race, I wasn't prepared, and I ran out of gas.

I'm attaching a picture, not sure if it'll work.  I'm the super-tall guy waving at my wife.

OK, I did it.  I ran the entire five miles of the Turkey Trot this morning.  It took me a full hour, but I did not walk a step.  Next year I hope to finish it in 45 minutes.  Congratulations to all who Turkey Trotted today.  May it become a yearly tradition for all of us from now on.

I will try to post a photo here too. Fun day.

    I better go rest.

My hip bones are aching. I thought it was because I'm an old bag but my 10 y/o said his hips were hurting too.

Well- I am glad to see that everyone seems to have accomplished their thanksgiving goal with varying degrees of success----------------

especially glad to see FatLadyRunning do so well & to see Jess post such a good time in her 5K-also glad to see that though some of us struggled- nobody really crashed and burned

but---,Maybe fair to remind ourselves- thursday wasn't really a "transformative experience'- in the greater scheme of things it was just one more day of running- in a new lifetime of running.

the most important thing-is to KEEP running

so-when is your NEXT run?-how FAR?- WHERE are you going to Run?- how fast?

my next run-is sunday--off road(as always)--- very strenuous 5K course--- HUGE hill

tuesday- flat trail- will run5K---PLUS 10%-so about 3-1/2 miles- I will actually run 3.2 miles-and then 3 minutes beyond that as I am trying to seamlessly transition into building up to the 10K distance.

starting to snow right now-so I guess I am going to have to buy an outer shell today or tommorrow as we are at the  time of the year,at last, where I can't continue running in long sleeve tshirts alone- need some semblance of rain/snow proof upper layer.

got to go walk my 13 month old Lab- and then climb up on a customers roof this morning,

    Best wishes all,

    stephen

    Keeping On Going Going Going

It was fun reading all of your posts this morning.  Yesterday I did my run at 46 minutes.  I haven't the faintest clue as to the distance I cover.  I'm thinking of taking my GPS next time to see if I'm even breaking 2 miles!!!  Har Har Har.  I'm going to continue to add a minute or two each time I go out till I reach one hour.  That's my new goal.  I'm not going to worry about speed or distance, just continue to strengthen my muscles, ligaments and tendons.

When I get back after my runs, I tend to lay down and go to sleep.  Another goal for me would be the ability to continue my day without a two hour nap!!!  I need to be realistic here.  I'm doing this to feel good about myself, not to break any records

Congratulations to everyone who trotted yesterday!

I just came in from finishing W8D3. I'm a bit of a slow poke, so I only covered 2.2 miles, but it's 2.2 that I couldn't do 8 weeks ago, so I'm trying to not beat myself up over it.

In other news, though my weight has stayed constant, today I put on my skinniest pants. The ones that haven't fit in over 5 years. Go me.

Great job, Wet sneakers!  I am right there with you.  Slow and steady, team subborn.  The most important thing is that we are out there doing it!  I can't even believe that I have been doing this for 8 weeks.  Congratulations on getting into your skinniest pants, that is awesome!

Karen - I love the picture.  You really look like a runner.  What an awesome reminder of your first 5K.

I still officially have day 3 to do in week 8.  I ran today, but it was more a run/walk.  I did 1.5 miles, and it felt good to get out there, but I wasn't officially running because it is my rest day.  I will do a longer run on Sunday.  Congratulations on graduating, Jess.  For the rest, graduation is in sight!

Re: Starting C25k tomorrow 9/29. Anyone want to Join?

Today I did my Thanksgiving 5K.  It was a small (120 runners) event, timed with a chip.  Weather was cold and clear, perfect for a winter run.  At the start, everyone else sprinted ahead, while I proceeded to run at my own best pace.  I did the first mile in 14:30, hit mile 2 at 30:00 (my best 2 mi time to date), and powered thru the last 1.1 miles to complete the race in 46:36 - a 15:02 pace. WhooHoo!  I don't think I could have run much faster, because my heart rate ranged from 160-173 (near my max) for the whole race.  This was a 5:12 min improvement since my last race 5 weeks ago.

Aprillily- I just want you to know that the first 5K I did at the beginning of training was at 62:42, far behind the last finisher.  So I think its great that you were able to finish under one hour.  Just think - you ran almost one hour!!  As long as you keep at it, you will do better.  For us Penguins, we make a lot of improvement with our initial training.

For those of you who had ~5 mile runs this week, and completed them near one hour - that is so awesome.  I did my first 5 mi long run earlier this week - but I took it nice and sloo-ww (ie. 18mm pace or 90 mins).  That was one long run.  I have a long way to go to get under one hour.

    Jo Anne

Thank you sooooo much for the encouraging words. I will remember them. When I checked the race results, I came in last. If you look at it another way, however, I came in 2nd in my age/sex range...but there were only 2 of us in the above 60 age/female bracket.. I am excited to try to beat my time next time and Jo Anne, looking at your numbers, I see that it is possible..

And your weight loss results are so inspiring too.

Karen, I love your picture. You look fabulous.
