Men in Tights!!!

I am looking for some feedback/opinions/comments from both men and women as to what you think about Men wearing tights? Running tights of course, worn only while perfroming the act of running, not keeping them on for the rest of the day while doing errands etc.

I am entering into my first winter of serious running here in the Northeast and am in need of a pair or two of winter running bottoms.  I have a pair of tights that i have worn this fall from time to time.  I like wearing them for runs because unlike pants they dont bunch up, flap in the wind and are generally more comfortable and warm to wear.  My hesitation to wearing them more often and buying another pair or two for winter is....  in addition to a good ribbing from my wife,  I sometimes just feel weird putting on and wearing a pair of tights!  I mean, I like wearing them to run so why should I feel weird? right?  i see plenty of men wearing them and I dont think they are Weird or odd..

I am really ok with them (i think) and will endure the razzing from home because it is really OK for men who are runners to wear tights to run..... right?

I have use them for the last 3 winters here in Michigan. I would have to say, when the temp gets below 30 degrees and its frostbite time, I would rather get razzed then frostbite. Then again everyone really thinks im nuts for running in the really cold weather and forgets all about what im wearing..............

So I say wear them if you gotum..

I see nothing wrong with it!!  My husband wears them when we're running in 35 degree weather.  Even before we started running, I'd think nothing of seeing men running wearing tights.  I've also seen men wear shorts over their tights.  Go with what's most comfortable for you!!!!!!

    Hey guy,

I'm totally with you on the tights subject.  My appearance is, lets say, less than aerodynamic.  However, I just finished the Arlington Winter Run, and it was COLD there.  26 Degrees cold.  At least we knew about the weather a few days in advance.  I went earlier during the week and bought a pair of black tights (slimming, you know) for the run.  I was a little trepidatious but I decided to make it a go.  What I can say is that I'm glad I wore them. Sweats would not have worked as well for running, and the windbreaker type nylon pants annoy me with the constant "swish, swish".  So I would give wearing tights a big thumbs up.  Just be sure to wear some support underneath, like briefs or a J.S..

And be prepared for your wife to spend 2 days skipping around the house with her hands on her hips, singing "We're MEN! Men in TIGHTS!...."      *Sigh*

Re: Men in Tights!!! of the many benefits of being a woman is that I can wear tights and not be weird about it....BUT with that said, I wear my compression gear under sweatpants because I too am self conscious of the tightness of the gear....before I was a runner I would have thought "dude put some clothes on" but now as a runner, I see nothing wrong with it...matter of perception...but definately change as soon as you get one wants to see anyone in compression gear at the grocery store, guy or gal...IMO.

Hehe.....glad to know us gals are not the only one's who worry about this.  While I was out and about today I saw 4 guys, all in tights with shorts over, out running.  Being a runner and doing it myself I thought "good for them".  Before I was a runner I don't think I would have commented on the tights but more so the intelligence of running when its so cold.   Now I'm one of those hmm people... who could care less what they think.

I will say the tights come in handy for non-running activites also.  For examply today its a whopping 21 deg out, and I had to finish the christmas lights.  My tights were keeping me nice and cozy under some sweats.  Just please NEVER wear them out shopping or anything.

I never wore tights except for one time when it was a whooping 15 degrees outside and I had a winter meet next Tuesday. I thought to myself hmm, let see just how superman will feel wearing tights in 15 degree weather. Turns out, I ran much faster than before and as I got tired felt like jogging my way back home and ever since that day, I always told the guys if you want to run like superman, get used to the tights.

Getting my husband in tights the first time was like pulling teeth.  He threw a pair of shorts over them.  Now he owns a pair of tights with a fleece lining.  He still adds the shorts and it keeps all the important parts warm.

Plan your run and then run your plan.

I say go for it.  When it's below 30 degrees outside, you have to do what you can to keep warm!  I just got my first pair of running tights this past week, and was a little worried about wearing them.  Turned out they kept me very warm and were really comfortable.  I did wear shorts over for modesty.  Went our Saturday and got another pair.  I say do what your comfortable with - non-runners will think you are crazy regardless of what you’re wearing!

    Re: Men in Tights!!!

I'm going to go out on a limb here, the wife doesn't run right?  The first time I put on my tights and compression shirt I was looking in the mirror and my non-runner husband walked by and said, "what is that your super hero costume ha!"   Very funny,  but there are days I wouldn't dream of leaving home without them.  I do think that wearing shorts over them is a must but to each his own. If your going to run in the winter you gotta do the tights.  I also wear them shoveling snow under my sweat pants or if I have to be outside long any other time.  Think of it as if you're in a special club and it's our uniform

I wish I had my tights on last weekend at CIM. I chose not to wear them because they didn't have pockets for my gels and I didn't want to wear a small fanny pack. The cold got to me more than I think the little extra weight would have.

    Re: Men in Tights!!!

I'm from the rugged mountain west, where they say men are men, and sheep are... well, never mind.   But so many people run and/or do all manner of outdoor activities here that I've never once heard someone yell anything rude at a runner. That seems common in other parts of the country, or urban areas maybe, from what I've read. No "Run Forrest Run" or anything like that. So now about the tights. Yes, it's a common sight here for both men and women. In fact, I rarely see anyone wearing shorts over them.... most people just have a longish shirt or jacket on over them when it's cold out. My husband wears briefs underneath, as someone else suggested. We both have 3 or 4 pair, some tight (compression), some less tight.

If you're looking for something in between a track pant and tights, here's one that my husband and I both bought recently. Soft, lightweight but not summery, fairly warm.

    Re: Men in Tights!!!

I've been known to slap on a pair of tights to run in the cold New York City winters.

    Just some do's and don't:

    1) Don't tuck your shirt/jacket into your tights.

    2) Don't pull your socks up over your tights.

    3) Do try and wear a pair of shorts over your tights.

    4) Don't wear any patterned or colored tights besides black, grey or navy.

    5) Do try to get a pair of socks that cover the gap between your shoes and your tights bottoms.  That part can get cold.

Try to be confident about the tights.
