Morning, Noon or Night?

This week a NYTimes.com articlelooked at biological efficiency, chronobiology, heart-rate and exercise. The question - are you a more efficient athlete at different hours of the day? Are performances better later in the day? http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/10/health/nutrition/10best.html?pagewanted=1&_r=2&em
This article focuses on heart-rate, which is ONE tool to look at fitness/efficiency/effort. So far there are 63+ interesting responses from readers.

Questions for You:
- From a mental/emotional aspect when do you prefer to workout?
- Physically (heart-rate, perceived exertion, power) have you noticed better performances in the am, pm? Or were other factors more important?
Overall, I want to fit my workout in, somewhere, sometime, make it work, get it done, do it! But I think it's fun to look at trends & current research/experiments and see what our fascinating bodies and minds can and can't do.
Best to you,

I like t work out in the morning, i wake up with more energy! And it's more peaceful!
In a perfect world I would wake up early every morning and run in Central park, but life interferes and living in NYC can be more strenuous on work out routines than other cities (I've lived in DC and SanFran). I don't find a specific time results in a better or worse performance in the gym, on the treadmill, or in the park but rather my enthusiasm to work out. If I am pumped to get up and run, I do it, and usually post a good run time, but if I am exhausted and not excited to get my workout in I find that I cut my workouts short, or don't push myself as hard. But to answer your question, night, because after a day of work instead of going postal on my coworkers I just run a couple miles and I am back to "Mr. Nice guy" at least until I have to get on the subway again. ![]()
GretaPRat, I agree the morning can be amazing! I rowed in college and saw the sun rise and set all 4 years. It was so beautiful on the lake in the early mornings.
DSchiemel - good point, the heart behind the workout makes a HUGE difference! Me too, most workouts help me recharge and be a nicer mom/wife/friend/sister/etc. I NEED that.
Thanks guys for responding!

I have to say "it depends."
Usually, I find more energy in the mornings, IF I have the time available and IF I have had a half decent night's sleep the night before and IF I didn't eat or drink to excess the night before. My work schedule is tough, though, and I'm also one of those people who like to sleep, so getting up and getting it on in the early mornings doesn't always cut it for me. I managed to get up and run 3 miles this morning and felt great. When I do work out in the morning, I note that I feel better all day long than when I don't.
If I haven't had a terribly stressful day at work, working out after work and pre dinner is also sometimes a good energy time for me--IF I don't overeat at lunch (which I did yesterday, causing my swim last night to be host to unpleasant afterburps of Mexican food underwater--gah!) and IF I eat a small energy snack about an hour before (half a piece of bread with peanut butter or a banana). One of the problems with night workouts is that I tend to carry the energy high with me and it's hard to dial down and go to sleep afterwards.
What I HAVE discovered is on that my longer workouts--run, bike, swim, whatever--for example longer than a 4 mile run or a 30 min bike ride--I tend to have more energy to finish those when I do those in the mornings. I seem to be able to do short interval training okay at night, but the long distance aerobic workout seems to do best in the a.m.
My lawyer type job doesn't afford me time to work out at noon, unless I planned to skip the shower afterwards, which would put an interesting spin on any meetings I have in the afternoons.
None of that probably would go into a computer and come up with anything sensical.

Depends on your goals! If you are exercising for sports performance and want to be able to achieve the highest possible intensities during your routine, then the optimal time to exercise is when your body temperature is at its highest. For most people, this is about 4p to 5p in the afternoon. On the other hand, your body temperature is at its lowest just before you wake, so rolling out of bed for an interval training session may not be the best idea. In addition, research has shown that your aerobic capacity, strength output, and sprint capabilities are also higher in the afternoon (but only by 4-5%).
Conversely, morning exercise does has benefits. By jump-starting your metabolism and increasing your core temperature early in the day, you increase your post-exercise oxygen deficit and calorie-burning rate throughout the remainder of the day. Therefore, if you are trying to lose weight or burn fat, a morning exercise session can be highly effective. Psychologically, you may be more likely to exercise in the morning, versus after a hard day of work, when your mind and body may be tired or you may have too many other duties to fulfill. It doesn’t matter if you’re able to exercise with higher intensity in the afternoon if you never actually get around to doing it!
The ultimate combination, and the system I implement for my clients who want simultaneously build fitness and burn fat, is an aerobic morning exercise session of 30-60 minutes, followed by a more intense interval, sport-specific, or resistance training session in the late afternoon or evening.

In college I was a morning person but my schedule was much different than it is now and so were my options. I lived 5 minutes away from the gym. I would wake up at 5 a.m. everyday and workout until 6:30 or so then get ready for work or class.
Now I'm not much of a morning person and my only option at that hour is running outside. I'm still working up to running outside on a consistent basis (especially in the freezing cold and the dark). And I hate waking up early now so I'm a "night" person. I work out and run after work. But on the weekends, I prefer the late morning hours to midday (noon).

I've never been a morning person, so I do evening workouts. For me, I feel better in the evenings after fueling and hydrating my body all day, plus it gives me time to really think about the workout I want to do (I'm really brain dead in the am). I do have a hard time getting to sleep afterwards and I don;t think I perform as well for am races (and they're almost ALL am races) because I'm not used to it, brain dead, dehydrated, hungry, etc. My best 5k race was a 5pm start - I wish all races were in the evening!!!
Well starting tomorrow, I'm up at 5:30 a.m. for my morning run. My schedule has officially changed. Let's see how I do. ![]()

Thanks for responding! That happens to me too. I've played indoor adult soccer & we get the really late times, so we'd often have a 10:30 pm or later game... for real! So, if it was running on time, you may start at 10:30, play, drive home and still try to settle down ~ 2 a.m.... yikes.
Interesting race with a 5 p.m. start, could to have that for comparison!

Thanks! It went very well! My dog and I went out for a 3 mile run at 5:45 a.m on day 1. I went for a 2.5 mile run this morning as well.
As long as I have my sneakers and my reflective safety vest, I'm good to go! ![]()

That sounds perfect. Our dog can't handle the run anymore, but she was always great company.
