Treadmill: friend or foe

Hey guys,

I saw this fun list "9 reasons to embrace indoor running" within Runner's World today "The Upside of Running Inside."
http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-240-322--13387-3-1X2-3,00.html

So I wondered, how many of you run on a treadmill? Winter only? Have one at home?

I saw #9 on the list "9 You feel less guilty watching Gossip Girl when you're running." and wondered, how many people watch TV/movies etc while running on a treadmill?

We don't have cable at home so we get like 4 channels. So, it used to be a treat to spin/run at the club and watch HGTV or something else fun. But most of the time I'll just run/walk and look at the numbers.

How about you? Have you ever had a treadmill accident? Or have you seen STRANGE treadmill behavior??

In my opinion, nothing beats a good run outside, especially a trail run or other scenic area but during the winter months, the treadmill is a perfectly acceptable alternative.  I run at the gym and they have tvs in each treadmill as well as a mini movie theater with all sorts of cardio machines.

I have never had an accident while running on the treadmill but I don't go crazy with my sprints and if I'm feeling a little "off" i'll opt for another form of cardio.

I love the indoor treadmill training, it beats the cold weather. I do watch ESPN, but with the new season of 24 I find myself on the spin bike right in front of the show or on a treadmill. Its my guilty little pleasure, my girl friend allows herself to watch “The Bad Girls Club” but only while on an elliptical so she doesn’t feel as bad for watching the show. I like her approach and found out that she learned that from watching the biggest loser.

I dont mind the treadmill any time of year because it allows me to quickly transition to lifting or doing other exercises without having to make my way to the gym from central park.

    Hey sara, jason here

as you know im still getting over my knee injury so i am probably going to use the treadmill as much as possible as it does reduce the impact on your knees by just a little. here in Texas we have the issue that all the roads and sidewalks are concrete so not very runner friendly. so the treadmill is a smart option i think.

there isn't really any grass, hill areas around here, its the concrete jungle. we do however have track speed work every sunday with my triathlon club that i go to every sunday. i'm taking it easy. i did 4.1 miles this morning and will slowly be building up to my 70.3 in june. that is my A race for the time being so i will look after myself.

    Jason,

I'm here in Texas, too.  I train at the Cedar Hill State Park a lot and it a has aphalt roads along with wide grass shoulders.  I've been to many state parks here, and they seem to follow the same conditions.  If you're close to one of them, that may be an option.
