Reealat - I will second that motion of JJ - go for the 1/2 marathon.  If you can comfortably run a 1/2 on the treadmill at 10 min miles, then you should consider the 1/2 marathon race.

    A couple of questions:

    1)  Have you run in any races before?  If not, you will need to be focused on pacing yourself.  During the race, you probably can run a little faster and still be in good shape to finish well.  However, paces always go faster in races.

    2) What did you do for hydration/ fuel?  If you ran that without any real plan for that, you might want to look into it.  You will probably see some better results if you do.

Good luck and welcome to the group.  Let us know if you decide to run in one!

    Hi everyone!

I have been following all the responses from my phone but haven't been able to login to reply. I am gearing up for my 5k next weekend. I'm anxious about the weather and I want to be prepared. I read that I should warm up for 1.5 to 3 miles but I'm wondering if I can do less. I usually warm up with a brisk 10 minute walk and that's it. I don't want to be tired before I even start the race. Does anyone have any suggestions? Also, the race is going to be at 8am near the beach in GA. I have been doing most of my training indoors. I think I am going to wear shorts and a long sleeved shirt, but I don't want to be too hot. Should I just try out what I will wear on a run next week and see how I do? I don't want to be distracted and not be able to do my best next week.  Anyone have any suggestions on what I should eat prior to my run. I don't want to sound like a worry wart but I fear that I will not have enough energy to run 3 miles or I will eat too much and my stomach will hurt. Any suggestions from you guys will definitely help!

Saturday I am scheduled to run 25 minutes straight so I think I will see how I do then...

    Eric,

Sorry that you are sidelined now.  Seeing a sports MD right away will help tremendously!

Not sure if any of you live in/near Atlanta, but if you do and want/need a running buddy let me know. I need to start running outdoors to tackle hills for my HM but I don't run alone outdoors.

    Thanks to all,

    Michelle

Michelle- If this is your first 5K in a while, then you probably don't want to use too much of your endurance with a long warm up.  Stretching, plus a walk/jog around a short block will probably be all you need to warm you up, so that you can save yourself for the main event.  Remember to seed yourself into the starting line in the middle or back, if you are not a swift runner, so that you don't get runover, or so they do "push" you to go faster than you've trained.

Definitely try to run at least 1-2 miles outdoors before your race in the clothes that you think you will wear, with similar weather as forecast.  Unless it's below 35 or 40 deg on race day, you probably want to remove your longsleeve attire after .25-1.0 mile. The forecast looks like it will be 40-45 deg. If its real cool, wear run tights, but otherwise run shorts will do. Remember to have something warm on hand to cover you up with AFTER the race, so that you don't get chilled.

I like to eat about 90 mins before my runs, to give my system enough time to "clear things out".  I usually have whole grain cereal or oatmeal, plus maybe some juice.  Most races have food available afterwards, though if you are slow like me, sometimes its gone before I get there - so have backup snacks in the car, just in case.

The only other thing I would suggest is that if you get to the race site early enough, try to drive the course beforehand, so that you are aware of any hills along the way.  You should do great, just remember to start off at your own pace at the beginning, to avoid burnout.  If you have lots left after 2.0+ miles, then push it for a strong finish.  Good luck and good weather!

    Thanks for the tips.

I plan on arriving the day before, so I will be able to check the route. The good thing about this race is that it is completely flat, so I won't have to worry about hills...We will be staying at a house about a 10 minute walk from the start of the race, so I am thinking about walking over there to warm up and do my stretches. My mom will be there with me so I'll be sure to have something warm to put on afterwards. I have to wait for my friends to finish the HM anyway so I'll be sticking around for a while. I think that next week when I do my runs I'll try running in the morning so I can see what foods work well for me. I usually run in the afternoons so that will be a change. I just don't want any surprises!

    Thanks again!

Jasmine's advice is great!  Very good advice. I would add only one personal thing. For a short run (walk) like a 5K I wouldn't worry about food but I would be sure to have a couple of glasses of orange juice and also a glass or two of water before the race. The orange juice will give you quick carbs and the water will keep you well hydrated.  Go for it!

    Old Guy,

Thanks for the response. I'm going on a run tomorrow at 8am with my brother to see how I will feel running in the morning. I'll try the OJ and water to see how I do.  I'll be sure to report back.

Michelle- I see that you are going to Nashville for M/HM.  I plan to also, and I'm looking for someone to share hotel room.  Don't know if you're interested or already have a roomie.

    Joanne,

I started the couch to 5k around the same time that you did and had to stop because of a knee problem a little over a month ago. I just started again this week and just completed week 8. Since you were so helpful communicating with me before, I wanted to say hello and hope that you are doing well.

I hope to keep at it.

    Hey everyone,

Just quickly checking in. I scaled it back a bit this week because my knees were bothering me, but today I put in a solid three miles on the treadmill with zero pain! Woohoo! I also did half an hour on the elliptical, so my legs are a bit tired now.

Eric, I feel you on the stress and reduced work outs. It doesn't do anything good for my waistline either, that's for sure. How's the injury?

Michelle, you definitely don't need to do a huge warmup before your 5K. Whenever I need to eat relatively close to when I am going to run, I have a clif bar..they are a good balance of protein, carbs, and fiber. I've never had tummy problems, but that's just me..if you have time I would experiment with the food you want to eat before your 5K this week.

    Jasmine, how's the training going?

So I've been a bit of a pooper lately with my running.  I did run the hilly park with Heather last week as planned and it was great to have someone to run with, we were a good match as our pace and stamina were about equal and on a couple hills I was slowing to walk and she reminded me that the beach is calling (we go to Topsail, NC every year) and that I need to get my bathing suit butt ready, so that was good.  But I don't know if its work or the weather or lack of spirit due to my husbands impending departure but I have so little motivation to run, and here's the kicker, if I would run I would feel better and that would make me run more with a whole uplifting physical/mental cycle but I just havent, meanwhile I've been researching treadmills thinking that maybe if I had one in the house I would find myself on it and it would decrease the HM training issues to some extent once my husband is gone, but he's saying its not neccessary and if he's spending the money to build my mom a guest room and fence in my huge yard before he goes then we cant afford one and he's right, so I'm bummed.  I REALLY need to push myself to at least go to the gym and get on the treadmill there instead of waiting for the weather to change.  I did sign up for a race in March so maybe that will help with the motivation, but I think a Feb race would be better.  I guess I just need to get off my a** again and get back to it,

    Jo Ann,

If my hubby wasn't joining me, I would definitely need a roomie. I booked our room at the Country Inn & Suites (615-874-8040) on 1/18. The friends that are running with me checked it out and it is the best and cheapest place close to the race. I'm not sure if they have anymore rooms left, but they were offering a discount to runners at $90/night. If I were you, I would call and see if they still have that available.

    Good luck!

    Mango,

Thanks for the suggestion. I am definitely going to the store today to buy some stuff to try out this week. I've tried Larabars and Power Bars. Usually I pick up whatever is on sale 10 for $10 to see what I like but it's been a while.

Everyone on this thread has been a great source of info for me.

    Thanks!

    Hey All!

I've been training hard for the last month and am happy to say that I can run 5 miles in a row.  I'll definitely be ready for the 10k in April.

For those seeking motivation to go to the gym, just do it!!!

    Ciao!

Hi Aprillilly, welcome back to our helpful group.

I sense several of us are having motivational problems. (me too). But Gig is right. "Just do it!"

I always feel better afterward though it is easy to put things off.

But I am aiming for a 10K before the Half M and that kinda keeps me stirred up.

And I tell myself that the reason I survived a dissecting aorta way back in '99

was because I was in good running shape at the time.

So it is crucial to personal survival too.

Hard to take that "long view" but if you want to "live long and prosper."...you gotta hit the road!

    Cheers,

    Old Guy

Hey all... sorry about not being on sooner.  I will try to remember everything I have read:

    1)  Michelle - let us know how the race goes.  I think you will suprise yourself in how it goes.

    2)  To all that commented on my injury- things are fine.  I have been taking it easy and working on the cross training.  I missed a few days but went on the treadmill on Sat morning.  I did 6 miles in an hour.  Funny thing, my upper body felt like I was barely walking.  The legs... well, they were hurting.  The inner thigh muscle did ok, just a little tightness.  I took off Sunday and will be back in the gym tomorrow.  More cross training, etc.  I will probably do some run/ walks.

I think everyone covered what I was going to say on the nutrition.  I think we are all in the same boat in trying to see what will work with our bodies.

BTW - I have been reading some old Runner's World magazines and found some suggestions for exercising for both the core body as well as the leg muscles.

Anyway, I need to get some sleep.  Today was rough with the girls - the youngest was not feeling good and we ended up taking her to the urgent care.  She has strept throat.  It seems to be going around in our family.  I had a skin rash do to strept infection and my other 2 daughters had missed school 2 weeks ago due to their infections.
