Thursday Runs

It is Thursday, right?  I'm sort of losing track this week.

Anyway, I ran a good 11 miles on the treadmill this morning.  Most at about a 9:45 pace, but the last 2 miles were more like 8:40.

Fourteen miles in 12°F temps (wind chill of 0°F). Felt great (though a little chilled after mile 11). Water bottle froze. Again. This one was insulated, too.

Yikes, Don!  That's cold.  I had a nice and easy 4 miler and I felt like I was resting.  It was one of those where I could have kept going for hours, but it wasn't on the schedule.  I'm looking forward to my 10 miler tomorrow and I hope I can get that feeling again.

    Re: Thursday Runs

Don, have you tried either of the following:

-Carrying your water bottle upside down so the ice forms at the bottom and you can still drink from the mouthpiece?

-Ultimate Direction hydration packs? I think the men's version of mine is the Wasp? Toby would know, he recommended it. They have an insulated hose that I haven't tested in the cold but would theoretically be less likely to freeze. And it's an awesome pack.

I spent an hour on the trainer and did some of my PT exercises because I was snowed out of PT again. I called Ray this morning to wish him a happy birthday and he insisted on seeing how I was doing and talked me through a bunch of back/core exercises (in addition to being superstar athletes, he and his brother are awesome personal trainers who specialize in core strength/rehab). Such a super nice guy and one of the most generous people I know.

I do today what you won't, so tomorrow I do what you can't.

ONE mile on the treadmill as a warm up for my weight work out. Everything in our neighborhood is still an unploughed mess.

One hour of snowy twilight stomping, the frozen delight apparently of just the right consistency to stick repeatedly as big globs on the soles of the shoes, creating some interesting landings along the way, depending on where the masses formed.  The stars were very pretty but the critters scarce.

    Re: Thursday Runs

Managed to fit in 5 miles after work. Was running a little tentatively because I felt my right hamstring tighten up a little at the end of my 10 mile run on Sunday. Still hit my target pace of 8:10.  This weekend's half marathon will be interesting.  I could probably shave a few seconds off my PR, but it will depend on whether or not the conditioning in my legs is still there and whether or not my hamstring behaves itself.. I'll put a wrap on it just to play it safe. The course is pretty easy.  I'll try to shoot for 8:20 splits for the first 10 miles and then see if I can run the last 5K at about an 8 minute pace like in San Jose a few months ago.  We'll see what happens.  Talk to you soon.

Knowing how well you plan your runs, you'll do it with time to spare.  Hope you'll PR, Karl.  Let us know how it goes.

Good ideas, Kat. I haven't tried either. I don't know if carrying the bottle upside down would have helped much yesterday (the contents had frozen into a thick slushee consistency that wouldn't make it out the mouthpiece anyway), but the insulated UD pack seems very promising. I'm not sure the wife will be happy if I pick up another hydration system, though (she already thinks I have too many; she might be right ). I'll just have to get rid of a few, I guess.

Try starting out with lukewarm or warm water.  That's what we do when we go xctry skiing and it's really cold, and we do have insulated bottles.

Warmup then 5 mile tempo run at 8:08 pace. Went indoors this time mostly because all my long sleeve gear was stinky. Decent run with the knee acting up a bit for the first half then kind of resigning itself thereafter. Got a scheduled 20 this weekend that has me a bit anxious .

5 mile run for me on the treadmill.  Slowly starting to ease back into things now that I can breath when I run.  Still taking the pace pretty easy until I see the specialist next Friday for a more definte treatment plan (right now just taking an inhaler 4x day and it's been such a huge difference)

I ran 15 on treadmill as well, heavy snow in Fort Worth made it impossible to run outside. I headed back to Austin for the marathon this Sunday.
