Ironman in 6 months?

ok - you all say a year is doable.. what about 6 months?

I have 7 months until an ironman and can get in via the community fund.

I have done marathons  and some olympic tris in the past, not for a few years - but  I currently hike/run/yoga/pilates all the time now. I have the time commitment already down (I currently work out 15 hrs a week on average, so finding time to work out is not an issue).

I know I need a coach to learn about rate stuff, but am I insane to think that I can do it in 6 months. I am naturally good with endurance so I think it's doable, but before I start calling coaches to find one - I want to see if people think I'll be laughed at.  My goal, of course, is to finish - 16:59:59 is TOTALLY ACCEPTABLE.

Not insane at all.  I would however find a coach to help maximize your chances.  My first tri was an Ironman which I had 6 or 7 months to train for.  Came from a running background.  Without the coach however I would not have been able to do the right kind of training and stay injury free. IM training is much different than marathon training, just because of the need to do more aerobic work and to not try and blast out of your specific zones.  Did you get a coach yet?

The club, masters, group rides are all great and should help you a lot.  I've done IMAZ before, you should have a blast.  Happy training, you have lots of time!

I think you can do it in 6months for sure! Do the local club group training, bike shop rides and anything you can get yourself into that will give you exposure to people who have done full IMs. Also, make sure you do at least one if not two half IMs - thats what everyone I know who has done a full recommends. I can say that I've never done a full IM, but I did do a half this year and several Olys and sprints, as well as six marathons in my past. I'd feel comfortable giving myself six months to train for an IM right now. Thats why I'm saying you can do it!

Just found this thread and am so happy to know that there are people out there that think an Iron Man can be trained for in 6 months. I'm so pumped I just had to comment.

    Hey Brolin,

Did you sign up for an event? What's on your schedule?

    Sara-

I haven't decided on which Ironman event I'm going to do. According to the net, Florida is sold out which is a major bummer. But, Wisconsin is a few weeks later and will give me more than 6 months to prepare. I have a feeling that's my guy and will pull the trigger soon (I'm bad with dates).

It looks like there are community fund slots (more $) for IMWI sept 12 and IMFL Nov 6. http://ironman.com/events/ironman

My hubby finished at IMWI one of the super hot years. I finished at IMFL. Both fantastic race experiences.

    Best with your training,

    Sara

I'm sure I could find out on the IM site, but I'd rather just ask, haha.  What are community fund slots?

dnavarro82 - making me work hard here as a volunteer huh?!

For example, you can still get into IMWI by registering with a community foundation slot, $1100 vs. $550. That extra $550 goes to local charities and organizations. All the info is at

    http://www.ironmanwisconsin.com/icf.php .

i like to challenge people...not a bad idea to go that route if I don't get a chance to sign up the 2011 IMWI.  I'm registering to volunteer for it, though.  So, we'll see if I get in.
