Sounds like you are making it in the right direction.  You have been making it to the gym regularly which is better than some of us (mainly me!)

I am getting antsy for the 1/2 marathon this Saturday.  It has been absolutely beautiful outside and I have not been doing much because I am preparing for the race.  I will let everyone know how it goes.  Hopefully, it does not get rained out or this week will be for naught.

    Eric,

I hope your race isn't rained out...hopefully it will be sunny and beautiful! My race will be in the rain I think and I'm just trying to come to terms with that. My 5k was overcast, too. I'm looking forward to some sunny races, but at least I was cool and comfortable and not hot! Tuesday I ran 4 miles in sunny 70 degree weather and it felt like it was 90! I had on capris and I was wishing I had worn shorts because I was so hot. I was re-thinking my idea to run the Peachtree in July...haha! I guess it all depends on how I do Saturday in my 10k and the HM next month. I'm hoping that I will surprise myself, too. My marathon running friend says that if I can run 4 miles, then I can run 6, and if I can run 6, then I can run 13. Ha! I don't know about that, but we will soon see.  I, too, have fallen off the work out wagon. I've just been running. Since I've increased my running from every other day to almost every day except for one or two rest days, I haven't done much weight lifting. I know that it will benefit my running to do it though...I just have to make time. I've been trying to run more outdoors in preparation for the HM and I just don't think about going to the gym to lift weights after that. Time to change my thinking!

Good luck Saturday! Can't wait to hear the result and see pics!

    Michelle

    Old Guy,

Glad to hear that you got off the medication that you wanted...and that you've been going to the gym. That's something I need to do myself...I plan on going tomorrow to do some elliptical and maybe some weights since I have a race Saturday. Don't want to run so I'll have some fresh legs! Hope that your tests come back ok.

    Take care!

    Thanks MiChelle,

I have an appointment with the cardiologist for Monday morning and we will do a "summary session"  Not expecting bad news. Everything looks promising at this point. I plan on asking a lot of questions about recommended exercises. My main trouble is probably leaky valves Like most others my age. I am pretty sure that exercise is one of the best things I can do. In the meantime I'm keeping at it! I'll give all a little post on the results

    Old Guy.

Old guy - look forward to seeing you pass the test with flying colors.  Let us know.

Michelle - I am wondering if they do cancel a 1/2 marathon.  The weather forecast?  Rain from now until Sunday.  Heavier tomorrow  - mid 40's to 50 during race time.  At least my concern about needing something to cool down will be for naught.  I will definitely wear my cold weather compression top/ bottom.

I plan to take a couple of Aleive before the race and take it easy.  New shoes in the car for after the race and now I just need to figure out how to carry the 2 gel packs I will have on me.  Since I do not know what they will provide, I do not want to have "issues" during the race.  I have tested the powergel version and we will see.

I think after this race is over, I may take a trip to Virginia.  There is a store close to where I work that has a sports doctor that volunteers time 1x per week that might be able to give advice on the thigh injury.  The notes say that he will spend 15 min. with you going over the issues and give some tips on what can be done to improve and avoid the injury in the future.  It will make for a long day, but will be worth the time.

Anyway... less than 24 hours to go.  Not sure how I will do, but look for a posting tomorrow afternoon!

Eric and Michelle good luck this weekend let us know how you do and make sure we see some pictures!!!!!

I am itching for my race season to begin  March 20 will be a 5k , then possibly another 5k on march 27, I was going to do a 10k on April 3 but that race might nixed due to my daughters soccer tournement, but April 10 in my 10 mile race, and as I had mentioned previously my plans for the pittsburgh 1/2 are also nixed due to my daughters communion, but then may 9 is the PIttsburgh Komen 5k and I will be running that with my friend Darla who is currently battling (and looks to be winning based on MD talks) breast cancer.  Not too keen on running once the hot weather sets in so no plans as of yet for summer races, but Veterans weekend will be 5k and of course a turkey trot 5k and then MY FIRST HALF on MY BIRTHDAY in VEGAS  (crazy me is thinking that if all goes well with my 10mi run I may actually contemplate the full MARATHON instead!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).

And as far as running hills 2 days in a row this week I'm feeling it today, but not nearly like I thought I would and have actually made plans to get my SIL and neighbor friend to run them with me on monday.

Eric: Good luck for your half-marathon on Saturday.  We all know that you can do it well, and I will be thinking of you.

Michelle: I've decided to forego the Nashville HM.  I lost too much time and tone this winter to be up to completing 13 miles only 6 weeks from now.  I'll just focus on my 10K in 4 wks, and the 2 sprint triathlons in June at Lake Lanier. That will still keep me busy.  I'll train for an HM after that.  Good luck on your 5k Saturday.  Smoke 'em!!

Well everybody, today didn't go so well for me. My calves (especially the left one) have been bothering me since Tuesday when I ran 4 miles. I could only finish the 5k and not the 10k and my time was slower than my first 5k. I had to walk some of it here and there. My time was 42:20. My brother ran with me, although he took off and left me in the dust because he said running that slow hurt his knees more...haha! But then he had difficulties, too and had to walk and slow down toward the end and came in only a few minutes before me at 38:45. I was disappointed that I could only do the 5k--couldn't imagine doing another loop of that 3.1 miles to finish the 10k as I probably would've had to walk the whole thing--and I didn't want to really hurt myself and mess up the next 6 weeks of training for the HM. So anyway...glad to have it done. I will post some pics as soon as I can get them to go through my phone to my email.

    Eric,

Hope your HM fared better than my 10k-turned into 5k!

Great pics Michelle - I will have to post my finishing pic later as well as pics of my medal I got.  My first one!!!!

Anyway, the race was good - finished in 2 hrs 20 min l23 seconds.  I put the details in the blog because it was easier than posting in multiple spots (plus, I plan to link it to my facebook page for family and friends - so much easier than repeating myself!)

Sorry to hear that yours did not go so well.  I did have to walk some of mine as well - but I was ahead of my self imposed time , so it was not so bad.  Besides, I did not want to waste my energy running up hill in a head wind!  Might was well walk at a fast pace and save the energy.

I was suprised that my body felt as good as it did.  Breathing/ stomach/ etc was great and felt like I had been training every day for it.  My legs - another story.  I had to take it easy near the end due to the thigh muscle acting up.  The last 1/4 mile, I got a bad cramp in the right foot and that just made things worse.  I just hope my knee  (IT band) does not act up later.  I will be icing it and massaging it later.  Right now, the Aleive seems to be dulling the pain to an ache.

I need to go - the youngest daughter needs help!

Talk with all of you later!

Michelle- I'm sorry that you had problems for your race and were unable to do the 10K. But at least you finished the 5K, and hopefully you will be back in shape to fully train for the HM. It's interesting that your brother (the hare) ended up with issues and finished only a little ahead of you.

Though I haven't had specific problems, I've felt like a slug on my runs, and I'm running my 5K distances >16mm - as slow as my race time last fall.  Well things should get better soon, as spring weather arrives and gives all of us the opportunity to stretch our legs freely and enjoy glorius runs!

Eric- Congrats on your HM! Glad that you were able to meet your expectations.  How was the weather and your hydration/nutrition during the race? I know you have the name of your blog in your signature, but what is the link? (Use control "V" to paste).

I need to get on my indoor bike trainer now, and then do a long run tomorrow.

Way to go, Michelle & Eric!!!

Can't wait to hear about Nikki's race next weekend!

I ran 6 miles of trails today, hills and everything.  Made sure I ate a hearty breakfast this morning, blueberry pancakes with flaxseed totally did the trick.  So far, my muscles are not complaining. It was great running outside; the temperature was perfect and it smelt so much better than my gym LOL.  I ran along the beach for a bit, and then ran in the trails in the woods.  Saw a beautiful bright red cardinal and heard many woodpeckers.  The hour went by pretty quickly & painlessly, and I was even able to fit in a few fartleks.  It'll take a miracle for me to run an 8 minute mile, though, which is what I'd like to run... eventually.  I don't think that's an out-of-reach goal for a 30-year old, though.

I'll be running my first race April 24th - the Crazylegs Classic 8k - with my BIL and sister.  Til then, training, training, and more training.

    Happy Running!
