What kind of shoes are you running in?

I just finished Week Six of the Couch to 5K running program and I'm planning on treating myself to a new pair of shoes once I complete Week 9. I wanted to actually make sure I was going to stick with it before I dropped some money on a new pair. Right now, I'm in a pair of Asics that I love, but I don't know the kind I have is exactly the kind I should be running in.
When it comes to brands I think getting input from others is great. When it comes to which type to wear I would rely on what a local running store says. That is the way to combine someone who is knowledgeable with running with someone who is actually looking at your feet and stride.
For me, Asics have always been the most comfortable. My podiatrist told me a couple of years ago he tends to see the least amount of injuries from Saucony wearers.
I think the bottom line is the best shoe is likely the one that feels best for you.

I have always run in Asics and New balance. My next pair is going to be Asics Gel Cumulous. But i think the previous post is right. You need advice from a professional because everyones foot and stride is different. Make sure you get something that supports your arches (like superfeet), if you have high arches. I tend to stay away from nike or reebok. I am currently wearing tired old worn out asic gel cayanos.
I wear Brooks..started in Dyads; now I'm in Adrenalines. Go to your local running store (Fleet Feet, etc) and they should be able to find just the shoe for you.

I agree that unless you are ordering the same pair you own/are right for you, then you should try on different kinds in a store, if you dont have a specialist running store then a trip to the podiatrist for a check up would be good as you can ask if you have high or low arches, which type of support do they think you need.....Iv heard the specialist stores will check your running style and recommend a pair....
I have Asics Gels and Im really pleased with them.
I'm fairly new to running; been using my New Balance cross-trainers. Switching to the extra-wides for my duck feet made a huge difference.

This is a loaded question, you know. I currently have 4 pairs of Asics (Nimbus, Cumulus, GT-2150, DS Trainer) and 2 pairs of Mizunos (Wave Inspire 4 and Wave Rider 12). Over the years I have worn Nike, Avia, New Balance, and probably one or two others that I don't remember. I always seem to some back to Asics. Nikes have never worked well for me.

I run in the Saucony Guide 3. They are the most amazing running shoe I have encountered. They have so much support and fit like a glove. I had a stress fracture in February due to worn out New Balances so I went to a specialty shop to get fitted for a new pair. The Saucony Guide 3 was recommended to me and I instantly fell in love when trying them on. I am due for a new pair in May and will continue to buy this shoe. I highly recommend Saucony for the support. I personally despise Nike running shoes. I also feel that their new Lunar Glide Elite is a poor excuse for support. I tried them on and they have virtually no support. Def go to a specialty shop if you can and try on a few pairs based on store recommendations.

My local running store fit me with Etonic Jepara SC4. I have a pair of Nike Tri-D's that I bought from a department store on clearance sale. I alternate between these 2.
I have a small but wide foot, so it can be hard to find a shoe that fits me well.

A running shoe store in my town (Nashville) fit me in Brooks Adrenaline 4 years ago. I have had a stress fracture and a baby since then and feel I need to be refitted (not that I'm still wearing that same pair! I'm NOT!) I was told I over-pronate but just mildly. I currently run in Asics 2150's and love them, but for some reason lately have just felt like I'm either not an overpronator or there is still a better shoe out there FOR ME. I think I will be going to Fleet Feet next (different than my original store) and soon to see how I'm running these days.

Haselsmasher has it right... get something suited toward your feet, your arches and your gait. I have found that the good folks at the running specialty shops really do have a good idea of what you should have. It truly does not matter what brand, and most especially for me what color, as they all wind up with dirt, grime and stuff all over them.
I definitely agree with you about color. I could give a crap less now. The shoes get recycled at Nike by me every 4 months now anyway. In the past I used to buy shoes based on their "cuteness" and then I learned the hard way with a stress fracture.

I just went to a running store to get my very first pair of running sneakers, but decided to drop the $$ on them to do the C25K training rather than wait.
I just bought a pair of Asics Gel Kayano. They had me try on 4 or 5 pairs. They fitted me (I needed a different size than what I usually wear for shoes/sneakers) and watched me walk in stocking feet , jog in stocking feet, then tried me in sneakers and watched me jog in every pair I tried on. They were SUPER patient with all my questions! (and DH's as he got a pair too). Since I have Rheumatoid Arthritis, they suggested I step up to a cushioned shoe (higher end one) and I tend to pronate and they accounted for that with the type of sneaker they had me try on. I wouldn't have been able to do all that on my own.
I have always been partial to Asics anyway, and these feel "Natural" as the store clerk said. He kept telling me, you'll know when you find the right pair, they'll feel natural. I asked what that means, he said "you'll just know". I was confuzzled...but when I put the Kayanos on, I "just knew it". They were made for me!!! I was so pleased.
Hope you get the same experience!!!

I will echo what many others have already posted. You should go to a running specialty store and have your foot/gait analyzed. After working for a specialty running store for many years I can't stress enough the importance of having this done. Brand, in my opinion, isn't really important, as long as it's a reputable brand ( ie Asics, Mizuno, Brooks, Nike, Saucony, Pearl Izumi, etc.). I have tried about every brand imaginable, but I always go back to Mizuno &/or Brooks. I currently run in Mizuno Wave Rider 13s and love them.
My suggestion is to have an open mind when trying on shoes, and try on several ( 4 pair minimum) and choose the one that feels right. Trust me, one will stand out above the rest. The best shoe for you is the one that feels the best to you! Also, check the store's return policy. Many specialty stores will allow you to return the shoes if they do not feel right after the first few days/runs.
Hope this helps!
