Splitting Headache, Even Barfing, After Race(s)... WHY???

Happy 4th, everyone. Wish mine was! I just ran the Peachtree Road Race 10K here in Atlanta. Ran my second best time ever, and what am I left with? A massive headache and I even barfed once, about 4 hours after the race had ended. This has happened to me at other races, but mostly at the marathon distance. And usually it's just the headache with the feeling of nausea but I never barf. Does anyone have any clues as to why this happens? At first I thought it was dehydration, but I don't think it is... I was well-hydrated to begin with, as I usually am, plus I pee clear and a lot for the rest of the day. (Sorry). So if it's not dehydration, what is it, and what can I do to avoid it? I have a feeling that it is just plain old exertion. I usually get this headache after runs where my head actually feels "hot" during the race. Can anyone help me out? I'd love a solution!

Maybe you have drank so much water that you have stripped your electrolytes which can be very dangerous? Do you get enough salt?

I really have no idea - Just a thought

I believe lactic acid build-up can cause nausea.

When I was in high school and doing stupid killer anaerobic workouts regularly, I often had bad headaches afterwards, especially in hot weather. Maybe you weren't sufficiently heat acclimated if it was a hot day or maybe it was overexertion. If it was the latter, improving your aerobic base might help you better handle and recover from running at such intensity.

Soounds like a classic electrolyte problem - been there.

You need to get sodium, not just water. I'm bettting you drank more plain water after you ran the race as well, and nothing with salt. Try Gatorade Endurance formula - that has much more sodium and also potassium than the regular formula.

I've also found when I started getting a headache and feeling nauseous during or just after a marathon or very hot race that sipping some water with a half teaspoon of salt added makes the headache go away. It's easy for me to tell if low salt levels are a problem. The water with salt added doesn't taste salty at all! Once my levels are OK, salt water tastes horrible so I stop drinking it.

If you didn't say that you had just ran a race and stated those symptoms, it's a classic migraine headache.

It sounds like for some reason exertion is inducing migraine headaches in your case. You ought to see a neurologist who specializes in migraine headaches, there are several good medications that can head these off as soon as they start so they don't progress to the nausea and horrible phase.

I don't know that I'm right for sure, but I doubt that you can become sodium depleted running a 10k... just my opinion. That can't totally be ruled out and it sounds like you could try maryt's advice as it certainly won't hurt anything. But I suspect it's an exercise induced migraine, for which there are a number of medications and other techniques that can be used to treat it. If they continue, see a headache specialist (and not some quack chiropractor or herbalist that claims various cures for headaches; see a neurologist that specializes in headaches.. ask around until you find a good one).

Re: Splitting Headache, Even Barfing, After Race(s)... WHY???
I agree that a 10K run normally wouldn't get one into electrolyte problems but a 10K run in heat and humidity combined with the statement about being "well-hydrated to begin with, as I usually am, plus I pee clear and a lot for the rest of the day" makes me think the OP is probably overhydrating and if it's with plain water that could certainly contribute to an electrolyte problem. My first experience with heat exhaustion and electrolyte problems was after running 6 miles - but it was a 6 mile run immediately after having been a volunteer at a water stop for several hours in the heat and drinking ony water because we were short on sports drink and saving it all all for the marathoners.

Just a thought...have you checked your blood pressure lately? Before I started taking BP meds. I used to get killer headaches after working out and would often get nausea throughout the day.

Even though the doc says the nausea had nothing to do with my BP being high, it went away as soon as i started taking meds.

I hope it's electrolytes, because that can be easily fixed, but checking BP is a good idea - some pharmacies have machines anyone can use. It's also a good idea to check your temperature after your run. That would help you know if overheating itself is a factor separate from electrolytes or other factors. Another possibility too much sunlight and problems with glare can cause headaches, although I would think that would happen sooner - do you run with sunglasses, and if you do are they distortion free?

bmccurdy and maryt,

My blood pressure was checked in April at an annual exam and was fine. I had it checked once a month or more during recent pregnancies, and was always fine. Are you thinking that a blood pressure problem would be a chronic, 24/7 thing, or are you saying that my BP might just be "off" during a run? Is it something I should check after a run? I am willing to look into anything! Thanks for your help!

Checking your BP randomly a few times (i.e. at the drugstore, or like you have at a physical exam or other clinic appt.) is the way to go. Everyones BP should go up slightly during exercise, it's when you're resting that you want to know about. If it was normal, it's doubtful to be a problem of hypertension.
