Re: 2007 Sub 19-minute 5K
Hi!

New to this thread but wanted to share my sub-19 experience. My goal: sub 19 in 2007.

I came back to running seriously after about 5 years off. I ran a 5K on Thanksgiving 2006(Feaster Five) in 21:30.

Ran another race in a disappointing 21:13 (Feed the Need) in late March after some sporadic treadmill training 15-20 mi/week over the winter. (Won't make that mistake again this winter)

Ran several 5K and 10K races that I incorporated into an organized 12 week training program that consisted of track training, fartlek, long and easy runs, and cross-training for a total of 20-30 mi/week. In late June I ran my 5K in 19:22, a bit disappointing as it was over my goal of sub 19.

For 12 weeks I maintained my fitness (while healing my very sore, aching over 30 muscles) running only a track workout 1x/week, a 5k series 1x week with a light workout in between.

My first 5K back into training 3 weeks ago was 19:14. I ran another 5K this past weekend (Eliot 5K) in 18:39-goal obtained!!! So motivated now to push for a sub-18 5K for 2008!!!

Yes those are very incredible times. However, there were an awful lot of 20-35 year olds from all over the state(Big state at that). The race we ran was a local race and every single one of those people live in the area here in Raleigh NC. Was there a lot of prize money involved with that race? >50 was enough to convince the winner to run a 14:40 in our race. Jeez, I would be willing to give him twice that just to see him break 14:30.

Some of the Grand masters times in that race you posted are pretty crazy. I sure hope I can run like that when I am that age. That is impressive to me!

<HR>

There was $5500. It was part of USATF Grand Prix - Pacific Division. Well over 90% of the runners are from the Bay Area (San Jose, San Francisco, Palo Alto, etc.). Both the male and female open winners won $350, masters $200, seniors $100, and super seniors $50. Most of the Grand Prix races aren't that big, but this one had over 800 runners, which is the largest turnout of any. It was held in Golden Gate Park.

Yes, there are some fast old timers around here. I came in 4th in the 60-64 divsion while averaging 6:08 pace in this 5k. However, it would be misleading to give the impression that this is a typical Bay Area race. Most fields are nowhere near as tough as the USATF Series events. I always win my AG in non-Series races, sometimes by just showing up, but have never finished higher than 3rd in one of them, even when running PR's.

Great job Chrisnerb! Way to stay with it! I have no doubt we will be seeing you in the sub 18 thread soon. Now if only I could find a way to get there with you?

I have a 5K race coming up in two weeks on a flat fast course. My son will be out of town so I will just have my daughter in the single stroller. She only weighs about 20 pounds and the course is extremely fast. It is almost like cheating with the single stroller though!

Yea, there are probably more college-age and 20-somethings living within an hour's drive of Raleigh than anywhere else in the country.

Funny thing is that those people are not the people that show up to the races. The college ones are not allowed to compete because they are probably on scholarship or bound by rules that forbid them from accepting prize money. If you look at most of those people listed above, they are all either in the master?s category or the teens category! That is actually surprising considering the 3 excellent universities we have in the area.

Re: 2007 Sub 19-minute 5K
Mission accomplished, though a few weeks ago I wouldn't have guessed it would be today that I finally did it.

Last weekend I "ran" the Twin Cities Marathon in the heat - I started getting dizzy and light-headed at mile 16 and decided to pack it in and just walk/jog the rest of the way. I was way short of my time goal, of course, but at least I finished in one piece.

One of the biggest local 5K/10Ks was this weekend, and I originally had planned to skip it, figured I would be too shot after running a marathon the previous weekend. But my legs felt much better than expected this week (probably since I only raced about 2/3rds of a marathon), so I signed up.

Conditions were great this morning: mid 50s and overcast (oh, to have had that in Minneapolis!). I faded a little towards the end and was passed by a couple runners - I think my legs weren't quite as fully recovered as I'd thought. But I still hung on for an 18:39, which finally puts me in the sub-19 club. My next goal was going to be a sub-6-minute-mile 5K, and 18:39 is exactly 6:00 pace, so I guess I'm in good shape to knock that off this fall.

Good luck to everyone else! Now that summer's heat is (hopefully) on its way out for good, I'm sure a lot of other PRs are going to fall as well.

StepStep

Great Job. You really annihilated the 19:00 minute mark didn?t you? And yes it does feel great to finally accomplish a tough goal.

I had a race this morning and I was able to lower my PR again to 18:27. You can read about the race here.

Those out-and-back turnarounds always seem to knock me out of my rhythm in a race - between the decelaration, weaving around a cone, and then ramping back up to race pace, I know I'm losing several seconds on each one. To have two in one race and then only finish 8 seconds off 19:00...I bet if you can find a turnaround-free race for your next one, you might well be under the bar.
