Re: carrying keys on a run

Many running shorts have a little key pocket on the inside of the waistband - look for it, 'cause you might not have even noticed it was there.  Other options:  if you have a drawstring in your waistband, tie your key to that; tie it to your shoe lace;  buy a "key wallet" that goes on your shoe; put it in an armband that carries your Ipod (they usually have a little zip compartment); put it on a stretchy band around your wrist.

Although I do put my MP3 player in my sports bra (hey, don't judge!) I never put my key there.  But I have done all of the above.  You have to be creative!

I really like the Nathan Gel Pak:

    http://www.nathansports.com/our-products/runners-paks-music-carriers/runners-paks/gel-pak

This is the first waist pack that I have ever been comfortable running with. It is light enough that you are not even aware of it when you are running, yet it securely holds your keys, license, credit cards, and room for some gels. I'm not a fan of leaving a wallet in the car, when I lock my car at a trailhead. So this works perfectly.

Great ideas on the hair tie suggestion and lanyard!!! Thanks for posting!

My husband usually just holds them while we run- but I will run alone soon, I'm sure and wouldnt know where to put my key!

My friend had her keys looped through her shoes laces while she ran her 5K Saturday!

I used a coil wrist holder until I lost it on a trail run without being aware that it had fallen off. Keys on a lanyard annoy me. If I don't have a secure zipper pocket on my clothing I now use one of these wrist wallets:

I've found tying it through a shoelace works very well!

I use the Spibelt, originally recommended to me by rbird on another thread: http://www.spibelt.com/

It has the advantage of expanding enough to hold the clicker for my car alarm + driver's license.

Re: carrying keys on a run

The Spibelt recommmended is an excellent option. It is a very lightweight belt offered with one or two pockets and can double as a racebelt.  You hardly know you have it on and the two pocket is perfect for a cell phone w/o the traditional bouncing.

I agree with you CanalGal about keys on lanyard. I tried that once, and I couldn't stand it moving from side to side. I placed it inside my shirt, but it felt heavier around my neck

Re: carrying keys on a run

If it's a house key, you should just slip it on to your shoe lace then tie your shoes. That works great. Shorts with zipper pockets are awesome too, sometimes if you're going for longer runs you can put the key and your phone in there just in case

Re: carrying keys on a run

I absolutely love my Spibelt.  My one observation about it, I won’t call it a criticism, is that it is not water resistent.  Now that the weather has warmed up I notice that items in the pouch do get moist from sweat.  So if you are using it for anything that could be damaged by water, like a cell phone, you may want to put it in a small ziplock for protection.

Just a note to Jaradel.  If you really want to be seen, wear something that actually lights up.  There are many excellent products at your local running store.  The danger with reflective is that it is reflective only, and not visible to drivers' who fail to use their headlights.

Re: carrying keys on a run

Typically during a real race, i'll put my car keys in my pocket on the back of my running shorts.  For just training runs I tend to leave from the house and don't even carry the keys.
