Runaway Parents 4/20/2010

Hello, Runaways!

I'm still recovering from my 8K and 10 mile bike ride this past weekend.  Yesterday, I felt lousy.  Not sore, just tired with a general headache that didn't respond to Motrin or Tylenol.  I feel much better today.  Tuesday is usually my mandatory rest day since I have no childcare.  However, my husband is taking his big test today and should be home around lunch.  I may get to run later.    Hubby and 17 y/o are scheduled to take a trip to London for a long weekend leaving tomorrow.  It is my daughter's "senior trip".  We still don't know if the flights will be resumed by then.  Darn Volcano!!!

Rebecca - How was the tri?  Was it a pool or lake swim?  I can't wait to hear about it!

Tyky - I am so sorry to hear that you still aren't running.  I hope they have an answer for you soon - and one that is easily remedied.  Taking on the yard work is a big deal.  You ARE a strong and very capable woman!   Keep us posted!

    My trip to Florida was wonderful. I had a really good time and we’re already planning for next year.  I was able to run just once- 6.09 miles and it felt great. The only thing I wasn’t prepared for is the sidewalks are heavily slanted toward the road so my ankles were ‘talking to me’ toward the end of my run.  We walked miles and miles between just strolling on the beach and shopping (didn’t buy much but it is fun to look).


    I spent today unpacking, doing laundry and cleaning. It’s funny that dh’s idea of dong the laundry is washing, drying, piling into baskets. Somehow the folding and putting away is missed.   “Clean house” also means different things to the two of us so I had quite a bit to do today, plus lesson planning for the co-op class I’m teaching tomorrow. Who needs sleep!?   It’s all worth it though and I’d do it again.


    Rebecca – I hope your dh did well with his tri this weekend. How fun! I would consider a tri if I didn’t swim like a dead fish. lol  Great job on the hills. They’re hard but such good training!


    Marie- I totally know what you mean about cleaning. I *love* the look and smell of a scrubbed house, but with 4 kids (3 of them boys no less) it stays clean for about 20 seconds. sigh…it’s only a season. One day the house will be  empty, clean and QUIET and I won’t know what to do with myself.


    Great job on your 8k!! Excellent time!  That’s so cool about the shirt, and I completely agree that the encouragement and camaraderie I get here is crucial to my running and sanity as a mom. You ladies are the best!  I hope you were able to get a run or ride in today. I found after my 10 miles last weekend that I needed to go a little slower the next few runs. No major aches or pains but my body was definitely telling me to ease up a little.  I hope the volcano behaves so your dh and dd can take their trip. My brother-in-law made it out of France in a nick of time. One of his coworkers is still stranded there.


    Ali – The Wine and Dine sounds like a lot of fun! Considering it’s Disney, the price is probably pretty reasonable even with just sips and nibbles afterwards. I’m sure the schwag will be really sweet. 5.5 miles! Way to go!!


    Karen – I’m so sorry you’re still hurting. I would definitely listen to your trainer and follow his advice. I hope you’re zooming down the street soon!


    TyKy – I’m sad to hear you’re still injured, too. I’m glad you got your MRI done. That’s a step in the right direction at least.  I also do a lot of the outside work because dh works long hours and Saturdays.  I would have never thought I could put up a fence or make a walkway out of pavers, but you do what you have to do. None of it looks pretty but it’s functional. lol! I hope you get some answers soon so you can lace up your kicks and hit the street. Stay strong!

    hey friends!


    Been out of commission for a little over a virus.  It's been a busy/stressful 2 weeks.  We sold our house, signed a contract on a new house.  Our 2 school aged children had state testing last week.  I've been packing/ throwing away and preparing for my half marathon in 1 1/2 weeks!  Boy, it's been chaotic! Can't wait for the summer!  The week after we close on our new house, we go on a "much needed" vacation.  Can't wait.  Trying to get my necessary runs in.  I did 9 miles on Sunday after church.  After this half, I'm def. gonna be taking a break from running long distances.  (At least until after our move).  We'll be going to nyc on vacation...can't wait to run in central park!  That will be awesome.  Hope e/one has a great week!

    Hey everybody,


    Just wanted to let you know I got the results from my MRI.  They don't see anything that should be causing me discomfort.  After mowing the lawn yesterday my ankle is on the verge of screaming pain.    I am just so discouraged.  I counted the other day.  It has been 12 weeks since I first logged this injury.   Boohoo

    Hi everyone,


    It sounds like everyone has been so busy.  Does it slow down when your kids hit summer break?  My 5-year-old will be going to a summer pre-k program (which is FREE ), so I think that my summer will actually be pretty quiet.


    I am registered for a 10K next weekend.  I need the proof of time for my half marathon before August, & I was surprised that there just aren't that many 10K races between now & then.  In fact, this is the only one I could find that wouldn't require an overnight trip and it is still 1.5 hours away.  Good morning, coffee!   I am running 6 miles tomorrow for the first time, but I don't think it will be too challenging.  It's the short runs that have been kicking my butt lately.


    TyKy -- I am so sorry to hear about your ankle.  What on earth do they think it could be?  I hope that more rest does the trick for you.


    Marie -- I don't know how you managed two races in one weekend.  Whew.  Rock on!  I've been thinking about your daughter's senior trip every time I see the airport closures on TV.  I'm so glad they made it.


    Angie --  It sounds like you haven't had a minute of quiet in a long time!  That 9 mile run must have helped some.  A run in Central Park sounds wonderful.  When will you be there?


    Tracy -- Welcome home.  It sounds like your vacation was some well-deserved peace.


    Here's my question for you distance runners -- since I'm about to surpass an hour in my long runs, I need to start thinking about refueling.  What do you like?  I've got my water bottle coming in the mail, but what about gu and that sort of thing?

    AliGator, I'm looking forward to hearing about your 10K next weekend.


    I haven't run since 3/21/10. I'm not biking nor walking for exercise, nor doing the stationary bike. That area on the inside of my leg next to my knee hurts when I don't get enough rest. Otherwise, it's much much better. When I had time this week I soaked in a warm Epsom bath. That seems to help a lot.


    I did get to do a Jillian Michael Kickboxing video. I did it seated lOL and I did work up a sweat by the very end. I did all the kicking moves for my left leg. When the video folks exercised their right legs I used free weights and did triceps and biceps curls. Clever, eh?


    Our five y/o daughter had a bad case of asthma Wed. night with no prior history. Usually, she only suffers from allergies. It was not pretty. She had a fever, was wheezing, and vomited about 15 times. We were in the ER from 9 PM to 2 AM then I had to find an all night pharmacy. We got home at 3 AM. I had trouble finding a close parking space and had to carry  her. That was  little difficult on my leg. We made it though! She was a trooper. She just made a little whimper when they started her I.V. The nurse was shocked.

    Well it’s been a weird week for me. I didn’t run at all. I had so much catching up to do for school and then I decided to move my schoolroom from the basement to the main floor. That was weight training for sure. And I made about a 100 trips up and down the stairs so I did work out just not in the traditional sense.  I signed up for my half marathon yesterday. I can’t wait!!! It’s the ½ Sauer ½ Kraut Half Marathon in Reading, Pa about 2 ½ hours from here. My MIL is going to watch the kids and DH is going to come with me. I’d like to think it’s because he wants to watch me run, but it’s probably because they’re serving chef-prepared German food afterwards. lol!


    Marie – I’m so glad your dh and dd made it London. It sounds like you had a house full. I can’t imagine feeding 17 people at once! Your menu sounds very yummy- especially since I haven’t eaten breakfast yet and I’m hungry.   For field trips…I live about an hour outside of DC and I’m pretty close to Gettysburg, Sharpsburg, etc so we have tons of stuff nearby for history. We like to go to Gburg and Sburg to walk the battlefields and their visitor centers. We completely love DC but parking can be expensive (Metro is equally expensive if you have a large group). I’m taking the kids to the National Arboretum next week to (hopefully) see the azaleas. Geeky, I know but it’s fun for us.


    Angie- I can’t even imagine how busy you must be! Great news on selling your house and finding another. In this area, that can take months and months.  I can’t wait to hear about your half marathon. Hang in there and stay strong!


    TyKy – I am so sad to hear this!!!! Do they have any idea at all as to what the problem could be? Not knowing is so frustrating!!  Can you see a specialist? A sports med dr would recognize more subtle causes for pain or injury.  I really hope you can get some definitive answers.


    Ali – My schedule does ease up some in the summer but not much. I use that time to deep clean and organize the house to prepare for the next onslaught of insanity. lol! Hooray on registering for your 10k!  I can’t wait to read about it.


    Fuel for longer runs – the million dollar question. I admit I’m weird- I have to run on an empty stomach or I get sick. I can’t drink for at least 2 hours before and I def can’t eat in that 2 hour window.  I’ve tried the orange slice candy but I’m a mouth breather and they’re too chewy. I’ve been using sport beans and eat  about 4-5 of them ~20 min before I run and then another 4-5 of them at the half way point of my run.  The package says to eat a whole pack at both of those intervals. I tried that and it wasn’t good for my stomach.  As for drinking, I have to pee if I drink anything. After 3 kids (dd is adopted so I can’t blame her), my bladder is not my friend. I try to maintain a state of healthy hydration all the time so I don’t need to drink while I run. I was able to comfortably run 10 miles without water.  Now I haven’t  run long distances in warmer weather so I may need to adapt somehow.


    Karen – I’m so sorry to hear your dd had such a rough night.   It’s hard when our little ones are sick like that. I’m glad she was so brave for you.  I’m also glad to hear you’re able to get in other workouts allowing your leg to heal. Very creative!


    Well, we’re headed to my mother-in-laws to celebrate all the April birthdays which includes me! It’ll be a day of gluttony so I need to figure out how to get a run in somehow. Have a great weekend everyone!!
