    Re: 10K Training Program Dec 6 - Dec 12

    well folks,

I had a pretty good day yesterday( Saturday)

My oldest son and I went on a good bikeride-- my son clocked it on his gizmo @ 48.2 miles. about 6 miles or so were on roads, divided among 3 seperate cities-the other 40 plus miles were on a trail that links the 3 cities together. Basically we pedaled out from our house-and 48 miles later were in Zoar, Ohio.

My son is a new college graduate- but he is working with me a bit this summer while he looks for a "real job"-which are in short supply in todays economy. We have been working on a customers' roof for 3 days-with one day left to go- the customer is an older gentleman who has spent virtually the entire 3 days so far watching us work.- the work we do-particualarly on this house-- is pretty dangerous and it's a well co-ordinated ballet between my son and  I who can anticipate each others actions, where we are-when we move, where we throw stuff, etc.- but the customer constantly lurking and ambling about below-in unexpected places- is adding a level of stress that we don't really need!!!!

It's been beastly hot the last 3 days-and while  we technically could have worked yesterday and finished the project- I knew that if we attempted it , I was almost certainley gonna tell the customer to get his !@#$%^&*()#$%^&* self out of my way and stop looking over my shoulder!

so instead--------- at the end of work friday I just looked him in the eye and said" well-we have a much anticipated and well earned 3 day weekend coming up-we will see you 8:00  tuesday morning."

My son really loved the bike ride as well- he did it on a new mountain bike- which isn't the most comfortable ride for 48 miles- but he couldn't get over how much better his legs felt NOT taking a beating from running.  This particular son has been a  competitive distance runner  from age 11 untill age 22- but he is now more into rock climbing and mountain biking.

some time ago I mentioned that I had done a "long" run of one hour and  fourty five minutes or so- we biked over  THAT route yesterday as part of our ride and my son clocked it as almost exactly 10 miles.

THAT kind of bums me out- because If i had known it was 10 miles- I could have gutted out another 3.2 miles or so and hit the half marathon distance!!!!!- I would certainley have done so-regaurdless of the repercussions- just to say I could do it. I figure I would have been pretty slow the last 3 miles- but I would have still had a 2:20 or so half marathon time

Oh well- maybe this fall when work  eases off-untill then I am roofing-and running about once a week and biking several times a week-and enjoying the chance to work with my son and get to know him as an adult-instead of the kid I sent off to college.

    Best wishes, all,

    stephen

Thanks for the update Stephen.  It would drive me nuts being watched and hovered over by your customer too...  Glad your almost done.  The bike ride sounds like a great workout.

I ran 5 miles this morning.  I'm officially in week 3 of Higdons half program.   I also have an 8 hour work day ahead of me at Disneyland.  Off tomorrow though so no big deal.

Kendra... you could use Hal Higdons 10k program.   I kind of improvised my own...  just added a little to my "long run" every week.  Glad you are still running.   As long as we stay active we are succesful.

I think its great that we all worked hard to be able to run mile(s) and that we go out frequently enough on runs to maintain that ability.

Happy Memorial Day everyone!   God bless those who serve our country and those that have lost their lives defending us.

    Jess

Hi folks. Glad to see some activity around here

My wife and I, along with 50,000 of our closest friends, ran in the Bolder Boulder 10k race this morning. This was the first time I've run the whole thing in the 3 yrs I've participated. My preliminary official results: 1:00:44, for a 9:47/mile net pace. I couldn't be happier! It certainly didn't hurt that it was a beautiful Colorado spring day.

Just think, 9 months ago, I finished C25K, and had to walk part of a 5k.

Next up, a half marathon in the mountains at the end of June.

    Off to update my .sig,

    Chris

Was at a party yesterday  talking to one of our friends------- He ran the boston marathon  just this spring- his second marathon.

says the fans are shoulder to shoulder 10 deep on both sides of the course the entire 26 miles which provides a HUGE lift the entire race.

He says he hasn't been happy  with his time after either marathon and has no plans to run one again

but he feels he can RACE a half this fall

needless to say- I am hugely envious------

good run this morning- just 3-1/4 miles- but s oeasy, so comfortable.

good to know I can still do it-AND that it is almost effortless under the right circumstances.

I am reminded that proper recuperation is hugely important.-and that  we probably didn't reuperate properly back in the C25K training days.

Tuesday finished the roof I had been working on- on tuesday the customer actually watched us with binoculars!( I wish I was making this up-but unfortuneately it's accurate. My son and i spent 10 hours working in on and off drizzle throughout the day- mostly  up and down a 32 ft. ladder- I spent a good part of the day with one foot on a ladder rung and the other foot balanced on various window ledges, overhangs etc.

Legs were just TRASHED weds.,Thursday, Fri.- but in peak form today.

My son is busy breaking in a pair of those Vibram " shoes" with the individual toes----

Your son will love those Five Fingers - they're all I run in, and I've converted my wife to them. Make sure he takes it slowly in getting used to them.

I had My First Triathlon this morning at Lake Lanier GA and it took a lot out of me.  The run portion was more a combination of walking and jogging up and down hills.  For more complete description of this adventure, visit this thread: http://community.active.com/message/764329

Steve- you have a tough time of it by having such a challenging job.  I hope that you preserve your body to survive till winter comes again.

    Re: 10K Training Program Dec 6 - Dec 12

I had a pretty good week this week.

roofing work had slowed down to the point that I was able to get 3 runs in this week-3-1/4, 2 days rest,3-1/4,2 days rest, and 5 miles Yesterday.

I was really quite interested in how easy the 5 miles yesterday was.

My plan for the upcoming week is a VERY easy bike ride sunday morning, 3-1/4  run on monday plus roofing, roofing tuesday and weds., 3-1/4 mile run on thursday plus roofing-hopefully friday and saturday off-and then I am about 70% certain I am going to run a 10k next sunday.

for the sake of our conversation we will consider roofing to be  cross training.

Part of the 10 K next sunday, I think, covers part of a half marathon  I am tentatively halfway thinking about for October. I will just have to see how work goes between now and then. Tentatively- if august arrives and I haven't hurt myself working or running-and I am still able to do a "long" run weekly of 5-6 miles- then I think I will add a mile per week to my long run-which will bring my long run up to 11-12 miles before the half marathon in October.

I don't really have to decide untill the last week or so of august( an coincidentally my 48 birthday-although I swear that has nothing to do with  the decision-well maybe a little bucket list thing, :<)

    best wishes all,

    stephen

Stephen- good to hear from you and I'm glad that you are able to fit in some running between roofing jobs.  That's got to be a tough mix of activities.  I don't think I could handle both.

Went out this morning to tackle a hill run that included one steep hill, plus several moderate ones, and long inclines.  Ended up doing 6.5 miles at a moderately slow average pace, because I had to walk twice on very steep parts, and it took 105 mins.  Phew! I'm glad that is over.  I'll probably do it one more time before the IronGirl, but I hope it is cooler then.
