This was not caused by running. It actually started, first I can remember, when I was heavier. I gained a bunch of weight starting in like 2003. I noticed when I was around my heaviest weight that at times, my hip would dislocate. I'm not even sure that's how to describe it. But I'd have very light pain at times in my right hip joint. It was similar to what you feel when you feel like you need to pop a knuckle. There are various ways to get it to "go back" to normal (or as near normal as is possible). I can lay on my back, bend my knees, feet flat on floor, then open the legs quickly...kind of looks like a frog? Sometimes that would work. Sometimes I'd have to be pretty forceful with the movement to get it to pop back. I can also squat down deep - legs in similar pose to what I described, and open the legs quickly the same way. OR, I discovered when I was running my half marathon that it popped back in if I forcefully whipped that leg back while I was running. Hard to describe. I guess almost like a runner's lunge - the offending leg being the one back and straight.
Anyway - I saw a chiro back in 2006 (when I was still quite heavy) and explained the problem to her and she said with continued adjustments, it would finally stop doing that. Well, I couldn't afford to keep getting adjustments and I don't have insurance. I started losing weight at the end of 2007 and I'm currently almost 80 lbs lighter (just 5 lbs overweight and losing more). I was hoping the problem would ease over time as my weight situation improved. That doesn't appear to be the case. I've been running regularly for about 10 months. For the most part, the hip has not been a problem. No additional pain, nothing. I ran the 13.1 miles at the beginning of May without a hitch. Meaning that there was not pain in the hip that kept me from running. Nor was it sore afterwards. This past Friday, I ran 11 miles (was considering a full marathon in October, but now I'm rethinking to just do another half and improve my time). Nothing special about the run. As for the course - it was easily less stressful than the half-marathon course. So I can't understand for the life of me why that hip is now sore. I know it was not dislocated the entire time, because I can DEFINITELY feel it when it happens on a run and I adjust very quickly. It only needed "popping" once and after that, it was fine. No additional hip pain during the run.
OK, so clearly I need to get something evaluated or risk crippling myself. Or even possibly risk causing myself to need surgery. I am not sure what to do. As previously mentioned, I do not have insurance, so cannot just "drop in to your doc and ask." I guess what I'm asking is if anyone here has experienced something similar and what is it?? Or, if nobody has a clue, what would be the best type of professional to go to right off the bat to get this evaluated? I don't mind paying out of pocket, but I am not paying a couple hundred for somebody to scratch their head and refer me to someone else. So - an orthopedic specialist? A physical therapist? I just don't have the first clue. In general, I'm very healthy and hate going to doctors, anyway. I don't have a regular doctor to ask this question. Any help is appreciated. I'm totally lost.

This sounds like subluxation. You'll need to see an orthopedist to treat it effectively. Without proper treatment it may get worse or it may stay the same, but I would recommend treatment.
