you never know man, you could end up being an awesome middle distance runner. that's what happened with alan webb. take a look at him, he can run a 47 400, and yeah he'd be one of the top, but he runs the mile and instead of being an excellent 400m runner while in HS, he was THE BEST miler EVER in HS. so you really don't know, i'd say try it out, and if you hate it, then go back to sprinting. but you could end up having some awesome talent i the 800/mile, cuz you've already got the speed.

like mlb said, you might be good at the middle as well. I'd just try it. If it doesn't work out, that's just one meet that you wasted doing the wrong event. If you don't try and it turns out you were really good at it, that's a lot of meets wasted doing the wrong events.

I have heard of good sprinters that are turned into good middle distance runners. If you think you're a sprinter but your coach is thinking you are a middle distance runner I'm sure there is a good reason. You can suggest to him that you run the 400 and the 800 because those are good events in which you can really tell whether you specalize in speed or distance.

I you were a natural sprinter, you would be doing the 100 (and the 50/60 meter indoors). And you would hate the 400. Pure sprinters tend to think of the 400 as a "long distance" event.

Yeah, now that makes sense. Just as middle distance runners think of the 3200 as a "long distance" event. To me,being a long distance runner,I think of it as a middle distance event.

Re: How can u tell or know your a "Natural sprinter"
There was a boy in the high school here who was State Champ in the indoor 55m (2001). In outdoor the track coach told him she would make him State Champ in the 400m. He did not want to run anything, but the 100 and the 200. He came in 4th, or 5th in the States, if I remember. He did not run the 400. Sometimes you listen to yourself. Sometimes you have to be "big" enough to realize that someone else might see you better than you see yourself. If you are not teachable (spelled c-o-a-c-h-a-b-l-e) you're toast!
Give it your best and you will learn something valuable about yourself.
