Any Guesses (before you look it up) !!!

30 years ago - 4/1/80: After failing to come up with a new collective bargaining agreement with the owners, the Executive Board of the Players' Association votes unanimously to cancel the 92 remaining exhibition games and to strike on May 22 if a deal has not been reached by then.

During spring training, the players had voted 971-1 in favor of a strike.

Who was the lone dissenter?
Why did he vote No?

    Lou:

    Is that date (4/1/80) right?

Didn't that strike take place in 1981?

    Pete Rose voting against it?

I would guess it either had to do with a player ready to retire or one who stood to receive a bonus for making the squad that year?

It seems I read something about this once....

Not Mark Fydrich (I know I butchered the spelling) is it??/

Maybe he made more money and this would lower it, or make him even with lesser players?

    Rotation, rest, trades?

Made JoBoo angry (VERY bad) and then Tom Berenger (in between horseback rides in the mountains with his dog Zip) would have to come up with a new plan to keep the team together.

What do I know, I was just into the Majors that year.

Edit: LL Majors just to be clear, of course I don't remember it as being Majors, just Little League.

"It was NOT a "big name" player (far from it)."

I would have absolutely no clue then!

80's... first name that came to mind... Mike Schmidt... then Kirk Gibson... Fernando, McGuire, Carlton (both Steve and Fisk), the Wizard of Oz, Ripken, Gwynn, the Hawk Dawson, Ryan, etc...

the things i remember about that decade...

    1. the Pirates stunk!

    2. kirk gibson crushing a HR in WS #1

    3. mets beating red sox (bill buckner fielding mookie wilson's dribbler - OUCH! sorry for bringing that one up BoSox fans)

    4. mcguire and canseco - and we thought they really were that strong!

    5. nolan ryan pummeling... who was that?

    6. Mike Schmidt - probably the best hitter of the 80's (noticed in reverence I cap Mike Schmidt's name)

    7. the young ones coming up - gwynn, ripken et al

    8.  carlton was nasty on the mound

    9.  ricky henderson stealing bases

Answer to "why?"---Whoever the "lone ranger" was...he voted "No"  because he was against the strike. ;o)

It was NOT a "big name" player (far from it).

Be hard for us to guess if the player was far from being "big name."  Can you at least give us a few hints?  Like:

    - Team he played for

    - Position player or pitcher

    - Rookie or veteran

    - Famous for anything
